Very interesting....I find that that section of the book deeply illustrates much of the discourse that surrounds the religion of Islam today. Perhaps Sir Martin Lings knew that and wrote those pages with a degree of self awareness. But again-often when Islam is discussed amongst non-Muslims, discussions often revert to whether they think the religion itself is "good" or "bad". This if anything is completely absurd because that type of dialogue is completely absent in regards to other religions. I've never seen anyone bring up Christianity or Hinduism in a discussion only to find the discussers debate the moral sanctity of the religion itself. If they are highly educated westerners they might point out issues they have with verses of the Bible or something, but its rare to find such people debate the very moral fiber of Christianity as a world religion-unless of course they are neo-pagans. But yes I think that the controversy of us Muslims in the academic realm lies not in sensationalized issues regarding offensive cartoons of the Prophet ﷺ or anything, but rather in establishing a scholarly atmosphere that allows us to pursue academic knowledge while being in harmony with our revealed epistemological worldview. Anyways I challenge anybody reading my comment to walk into their local public library and browse the section of books on "world-religions". They are likely to find different types of books written about all of the world religions: some being academic, others being devotional, etc. However only in regards to Islam will one find books that put the very religion itself up for a "pro vs. con" debate. I've never seen such dialogue expressed in regards to any other world religion. If anyone here has, please let me know. The point being is that one of the greatest proofs of the sanctity of our faith lies in the very fact that whenever it is brought up amongst a group of people having a conversation, the expressed subject matter is likely to get highly polemical: regardless as to whether the people at hand themselves are Muslims, members of other religions, or atheists. Expressed opinions on Islam remain highly polemicized, regardless as to whether those opinions view our religion as something good or bad. The mere fact that the human being cannot help but hold polemicized views on the religion of Islam in of itself is a sign of Islam's Truth, given the nature of the Qurans claims and its cosmology. As verse 13:15 says: "And unto God prostrates whosoever is in the heavens and on the earth, willingly or unwillingly, as do their shadows in the morning and the evening." Anyways thank you so much for your work. It is so invaluable and enlightening and I cannot express how much I benefit from your content.

This is the testimony of Ja’far bin Abi Talib, may God be pleased with him, who informed the king of Abyssinia about the condition of his people and the positive change Islam had brought for them: *O King, we were an uncivilised people, worshipping idols, eating corpses, committing abominations, breaking natural ties, treating guests badly, and our strong devoured our weak. Thus we were until God sent us an apostle whose lineage, truth, trustworthiness, and clemency we know. He summoned us to acknowledge God’s unity and to worship Him and to renounce the stones and images which we and our fathers formerly worshipped. He commanded us to speak the truth, be faithful to our engagements, mindful of the ties of kinship and kindly hospitality, and to refrain from crimes and bloodshed. He forbade us to commit abominations and to speak lies, and to devour the property of orphans, to vilify chaste women. He commanded us to worship God alone and not associate anything with Him, and he gave us orders about prayer, almsgiving, and fasting. We confessed his truth and believed in him, and we followed him in what he had brought from God, and we worshipped God without associating aught with Him.* *- The Life of Muhammad, A Translation of Ishaq’s Sirat Rasul Allah, translation by A. Guillaume, 2004, pp. 151 - 152*

Who will come to the bars and knight clubs?, who will watch our pornography..?.. etc..so lets activate the Media to keep people away from islam..
ULTRA BS! Belief just gives a direction, a religious scripture is a book with statements, which needs to be verified & authenticated through direct personal Spiritual Experience, like you should be able to verify the existence of god/soul/heaven etc , Any religion which denies this possibility is false and disqualified from the very beginning

With or without religion, good people can behave well, and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil-that takes religion (Steven Weinberg).
Such a statement is both sad and confusing ( at least to me ). Why should "religion" influence people "to do evil" ? Yet... it seems like "religion", according to history, has done exactly that. Thanks for your comment. Peace
@J R yes and no. Any ideology can be twisted. There is a huge difference between religious and secular motivated evils. In the case of religion, evil things are done, justified and excused on pure faith by appealing to a non-existent god and in his name. In case of political ideologies, harm is done by humans who are known and exist, and you can try, imperfectly, to get justice here on earth in trial (for instance crimes against humanity, killing ex muslims in the name of islam, murder....).
