  • In the year 2035, technology and robots are a trusted part of everyday life. But that trust is broken when a scientist is found dead and a skeptical detective (Smith) believes that a robot is responsible. Bridget Moynahan co-stars in this high-tech action thriller that questions whether technology will ultimately lead to mankind's salvation . . . or annihilation.

      But i think thats the point: Humans differ, each one has different strengths. So one human can paint a masterpiece, another can compose an opera, someone can write a great book. Robots do not differ. They are all literally the same (except Sonny of course). Spooner did not ask "can Robots paint", but he asked "can a robot paint". I think what he misses in robots are differences.

    • @Annihilationzh
      @Annihilationzh 9 ปีที่แล้ว +288

      I don't think it was intended as a burn at all. Sonny has a childlike curiosity. Spooner was being 'racist' against robots. Sonny then innocently showed that he sees Spooner and other humans as an equal.

    • @rattamundo
      @rattamundo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      I respectfully disagree. Sonny showed later that he is very capable of sarcasm; when he is drawing his dream, he says to Spooner: "You were right, detective. I can not create a work of art." or something along those lines. Seems quite sarcastic to me.

    • @Annihilationzh
      @Annihilationzh 9 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      That could have been Sonny being humble. Saying that he can draw, but he can't draw a masterpiece. It depends entirely on how you interpret it, and I don't think it fits Sonny's character at all for him to be sarcastic. Calvin spared Sonny because he was so innocent and child like.

      Andrew yes but their jobs are presumably guards or enforcers who usually deal with human criminals. The 3 laws prevented robots from harming humans, there's no real plan to dealing with one who would rebel because it was supposed to be impossible. In any case, the robots are stronger than the humans. They didn't know if Sonny would've tried to kill Spooner - so they sent in big, tall, strong guys because that's the best they have. That's more or less why they're in there, even if they're aware that they wouldn't do much good.

    0:55-1:10 is probably my favorite part of this scene along with Sonny's "Can you?". We tend to agree with Spooner when he explains to Sonny that he can't possibly understand this "human action" because it is not just a physical action, but a psychological action as well. Only later in the movie when we see Sonny wink at Spooner during his ruse against Viki do we realize that Sonny actually understood the action the whole time.

    A robot may be able to write a symphony or turn a canvas into a master piece, but until robots are capable of feeling emotions, only humans will truly be able to appreciate these things.

    This was such and underrated movie. The ending where sonny is standing on the bridge they could have easily mad a bunch of sequels, but I feel because they didn’t it makes this movie even better.

    Seriously, read Isaac Asimov. In the book "Robot Dreams" there's a tale where Susan Calvin interviews LVX-1, this scene was "inspired" by this tale, it's just amazing how far ahead Asimov was when it comes to creativity and philosophy regarding AI

    Well, yes, AI can turn a canvas into a beautiful masterpiece now. Dall-E 2.0 or Midjourney AI allows them to create a piece of art with only using given prompts.
