I'm just turning 70, so I grew up in the 60's. When you think that my dad fought in WW II and we were faced with Vietnam, this song has a very special meaning for our generations. But at the same time, it is a timeless song because each generation grows up with different challenges and fears. Love you guys and congrats on the upcoming addition!
I just turned 50, my Dad fought in Vietnam and both his parents served during WWII. As a mother and new grandmother, this song resonates in my blood. Has always since I heard it as a child. Families are important, generations need each other.
Happy Bday! I just did turn 70. I remember my folks building a bomb shelter in the back yard! I'm prettsure the anxiety seed was planted then. And yes, RIP to the wonderful Croz. I'm gonna miss him 😢
I’m getting ready to turn 68 and my father made it back to the states in late 1945 after 22 bombing missions in Germany, stationed in England. Times were so different in the early 60’s and there really weren’t any fears….unlocked doors, bicycles left out front, keys left in the car’s ignition! The exception was maybe getting swats by the teacher or principal if you were out of line! After children in the 80’s, fear’s really started to sink in about their wellbeing and who they ran around with and drugs! Got away with no scars with two wonderful daughters and five grandchildren! This will go on forever!
I've only recently learned that not all parents took the time to foster curiosity in their children, as if schools teach everything. In my appreciation for all my parents taught me, this song was my ringtone for them until the inevitable. RIP mom and dad. 😥
I’ll never forget, I was trying to introduce my Grandmother to my music when I was a teenager in the late 60’s and 70’s. I played this song for her, and she made me play this over and over.
Teach your children well...raise them with love and understanding...and they will teach you well what they see through their eyes. You will be good parents🇨🇦
Awwww, your reaction made me cry as much as the song. I am just so happy for you guys. You are gonna be wonderful parents. This song just gets me emotional every time I hear it.
Songs do hit a whole lot differently once you are becoming a parent. You guys will do great. Peace, love and many blessings for your beautiful family. 🤗🤗🤗
Especially if the song specifically addresses the parent-child relationship as its subject, as this one does. Children learn from their parents, but parents also learn from their children. It is strange to identify with the 'children' mentioned in the song at one stage in your life, then hear the song later but now you're wearing the 'parent' hat.
Teach your children well, but also Teach your Parents well! Children are our greatest teachers, Lex & Brad, you'll learn so much about yourselves when Jack gets here. Love you guys, so excited for you 💖👨👩👦💓 Plus - RIP David Crosby, the brilliance of your harmonies will shine forever 💝
This is a song for the ages. As the generations move through history there has always been a tension between the older and younger generations. But there has also been a great two-way learning process between the generations. Such is life.
Now a days people have no personal respect, that means they can’t give respect to anyone else. I’m so glad I learned young this is the kind of music I was brought up on.
This was one of my uncle's favourite songs. When he passed we played it at his funeral and I filled with happy thoughts of him, when I realized everyone was singing along
Every time I hear this song, it reminds me of my high school graduation. That was way back in 1972 and the graduating class stood and sang this song. The more you hear it, the more sense it makes. Loved your reaction.
My parents exasperated me at times when I was in my teens and early 20s and the older I got the wiser they got. They went through really hard times growing up and they were just trying to protect me from it, not stifle my dreams or ruin my fun. They've both past now and this song hits a lot harder than it used to. I'd give anything to be able to talk with them and get their wisdom and advice on things right now. About all I can do is try to take what they taught me and do the best I can.
I'm in my late 60's and growing up in the 60's and 70's was totally different! My children are between 35 and 43 and I just pray that I have passed on enough of what my parents thought me!
So beautiful watching you two connect to this classic.. Written to their generation; their peer's 'hell' was the Vietnam war era.. and also written for the older generation, who's own 'hell' had been the WWII era. It's a masterful, heartfelt and gentle reminder to both, to bridge some of the gap that was part of "The '60s". Melody, harmony and lyrics.. just sublime.
Well...know we love y'all, and know y'all are gonna be great parents...and children! Treat you parents well too...and I'm sure you do. Great, classic song. RIP David!
The day you have a child your whole life prospective changes. Its not about yourself anymore its about the new soul you just brought into this world and your responsible for there protection.. In other words its time to grow up..😁 love you two💞
So glad that you're going to be parents. There's no way to explain how it's going to totally change and improve your lives. Appreciating this song is a strong sign that you're getting it. You're going to be great.
You guys are awesome! Fun fact: Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead) is playing the pedal steel guitar on this track. CSNY we’re recording this in California, and Stills says “this song needs a pedal steel on it”. Someone said “I think Jerry just bought one not too long ago and he’s been messing around on it. Maybe he’d come in and give it a try.” I can’t think of another time he’s played that instrument on a record.
Welcome to Parenthood. You'll be great. Sure it will be challenging but your sons luckier than so many to have two parents who have a great head on their shoulders, and I'm sure love a plenty.
That was an absolutely lovely moment when you teared up! The fact that you did and that you said, honestly, that it's all the sudden more real than a few months ago is exactly what you should be feeling. Think about how much fun you are going to have introducing him to all the "weird" music you like. You guys are gonna be great parents!
Welcome to the Parents' Club. It's time to get serious. But it has its joys and pleasures. And this is a great piececof music- the harmony, the guitar, and of course, the lyrics. Always, ALWAYS, remember, THEY LOVE YOU. Always love them back.
I've always been honest with my children. I taught them about God and morales and personal space, and being respectful and kind to others. I taught them about the world and how God made us all and to love everyone. This is a temporary home and to make the most of it while their here. Just be honest and open to them. My boys are 36 and 40 now and I am so proud of them and the loving hearts they have. ♥️
The words of this song will mean more to you as the years go by. Even as you teach HIM about life, little Jack is going to teach YOU soooo much--about yourselves, about life, about your own parents & their role in your life, and all the things they felt when you were young. Each generation has its own obstacles to overcome, but parenting is still parenting, and it is truly a blessing. Enjoy the journey!
This song came out during a time of a HUUUUUGE generation gap, with the children being hippies (changing the world of war and boredom), and parents from the 50’s (desperately hanging on to a slower, more conservative world). It was a beautiful song that took a compassionate view of both sides, just when it was needed. Although really, it’s always needed.
Parenting - It's a life changer. This song holds so much truth as you have just realized. I've always felt that one of my triumphs of my life was sharing my mistakes and experiences with my children so that they had better data for making their own decisions as they were growing up.
Times do change. And as parentals, we lead the way for our children, and their generation, to continue teaching them about the things that DON'T change. The way you two handle struggles in your lives and appreciate the happy times. (I remember a video on your vlog channel where you both talked about the things you were grateful for. That made such an impression on me)The way you work hard at what you do, and the way you love each other and take such good care of each other....those are the gifts you will pass on to Jack that will help him navigate the changing times. Like Lex said, feeling good about who you are when you lay your head down at night. Excellent reaction. 💖
Graham was the nicest, most genuine guy you could meet. I used to work for him in the 80's when CSN was recording a new album and then touring. They were idols of mine growing up, so working for Graham and being around them was mind blowing as I'm sure you can imagine. Extraordinary people, for sure.
Congratulations on having a child on the way.. you will make great parents just make sure your kids get to hear music like this from the time they are little
Truly a "timeless" classic...one that has remained (and will remain), valid, and relevant throughout the generations to come. It gets me right in the "feels" too Lex...every time. Peace! ✌😎
Nice, another great song from Deja-vu! Always relevant lyrics. A great song to honor the late David Crosby is his Almost Cut My Hair, it is an all timer from that era. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
It was fun watching you react to this song. It hits home. When they finished the first chorus and Brad popped an ear to ear smile I knew the song had hit home with him and even before the song started I was wondering “Hmmm how long will Lex last until the water works start.” It took till the second chorus but the tears did come. At my wedding reception when it was time to dance with my mother I had this song played to show how much I respected and loved her. As soon as the steel guitar intro started she recognized the song and she began crying happy tears. What a simple yet beautiful song.
The message of less judgement- more love has sadly been lost. Well almost, there are a few burning embers such as 'Brad & Lex' who help us remember them as they discover golden treasures from the past. Live, love, rock on.
My dad listened to this song around me and my sister when we were kids. Now it makes me cry. Looking back, much of his parenting philosophy can be traced back to these lyrics.
I’ve always liked the way this song looks at two different perspectives. You go into parenting knowing that you’ll teach your kids things but I was taken by surprise when it comes to how much I learned from my kids.
It's always been about a "life code" to me, and our responsibility, as parents, to teach your children well. As rocky as it might be sometimes, "know they love you". Then it goes full circle and you teach your parents well and each get to see the good work the others have done. Garcia's pedal steel and Graham Nash's high harmonies just make it so special. Saw Graham a couple of years ago, at a small theatre here in Alabama, and he's still GOT IT! What a phenomenal album!
This song used to make me cry. The first time I heard it, my dad was driving my grandma and me my grandma to my great grandma’s house on what used to be the family farm on a dirt road in Iowa. It made me cry as a young man, and it got me through my toughest days as a teacher of kids with special needs. Still my anthem.
To begin, congrats to you both on the new addition to your family. I've been following your channel for a long time and appreciate all the good energy you send out. I wish you all the best. I've listened to this song since its release and while I've always liked it, it haschanged meaning (my understanding of the meaning) over the years. I'm 64 now, I have a autistic son which has added another layer of complexity to "teaching your children well" I understand your emotional response Lex, it still hits me like that now and again. God bless David - his voice is for the ages now.
This song I’ve always loved it’s so touching beautiful and down to earth. Almost makes me cry a little now because my almost 18 and almost 20 year old teen boys have done most of their growing at least where they need me. Enjoy every moment of your new baby! It’s very exciting and you will fall in love with him the instant he is born. You won’t believe how strong your feelings will be for this new little person. 🥰 (ok by end of it, I was bawling. No joke) 😊

Lex, you look stunning . . . hope you're feeling well, too! Love the reaction . . . one of my favorite CSN&Y songs - brings back so many memories from my early teens!
When this song came out I thought it was about us kids & the parents needed to lighten up & then all of a sudden & overnight. , you become a parent & the song has new meaning .
Is that the "belly", Lex? Lookin' good! God love you all! Yes, especially we aging hippies who had Greatest Generation parents (WW II and Great Depression) and maybe did not pay enough attention to how they grew up! Aww. So sweet, Lex. Great tune.
Oh boy you two are about to take an amazing ride. We did it 5 times and every kid was a different journey. Now we are Grandparents and that is a totally different trip. You guys will do great. You do have the advantage of having thousands of people that will give you advice if you want it.

Fun fact - the steel guitar in this song was played by Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead!

Enjoy every moment of your new baby! It’s very exciting and you will fall in love with him the instant he is born. You won’t believe how strong your feelings will be for this new little person. 🥰 (ok by end of it, I was bawling. No joke) 😊
You guys are really cool! A nice couple !!! Congratulations for your success. My wife Priscila and I enjoyed it very much and had a good time. Hugs from Brazil.
Lex, you look stunning . . . hope you're feeling well, too! Love the reaction . . . one of my favorite CSN&Y songs - brings back so many memories from my early teens!
Thank you so much!!
You guys will be amazing parents.
A family code... to look into the mirror and like the person you see. Truth. Pure truth.
When this song came out I thought it was about us kids & the parents needed to lighten up & then all of a sudden & overnight. , you become a parent & the song has new meaning .
It hits me every time I see Lex get hit by emotions from music. Music is so powerful. Great song great reaction. Love you guys.
Great song choice! Just added to my playlist ❤ As a child of the 60’s and 70’s this was such a reminder of the music that shaped that era.
song of my late teen years, for the mothers and fathers of us all
Is that the "belly", Lex? Lookin' good! God love you all! Yes, especially we aging hippies who had Greatest Generation parents (WW II and Great Depression) and maybe did not pay enough attention to how they grew up! Aww. So sweet, Lex. Great tune.
You guys are going to be GREAT parents! Just love your child, do the best you can and trust that God will take care of the rest.
Oh boy you two are about to take an amazing ride. We did it 5 times and every kid was a different journey. Now we are Grandparents and that is a totally different trip. You guys will do great. You do have the advantage of having thousands of people that will give you advice if you want it.
Be Pono... Live Aloha... Love Life...
Worth mentioning that the great Jerry Garcia is playing pedal steel guitar - Rumor has it he thought it was a practice take, but it wasn't.
