    fun fact: The steel guitar on this track was played by Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead....

    • @ericgerber9751
      @ericgerber9751 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Another fun fact - Jerry played on a few of those songs from that album, and the CSNY guys came over and taught the Grateful Dead how to harmonize! Listen to the beautiful harmonies on American Beauty - those are CSNY harmonies all the way!

      @@ericgerber9751 fun fact #3,lol.
      You might already be aware of this Eric, but I want to share it just in case some fellow music lover wasn't aware: Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh are both on a few cuts from David Crosby's first solo album, "If I Could Only Remember My Name".
      It's pure magic.
      Joni Mitchell and Grace Slick are on it too.
      Highly recommend the entire album. 💜✌🎶

    At this time Graham Nash, the lead singer of this song and writer, was living with Joni Mitchell at the famous Laurel Canyon in LA. Like everyone who met Joni, was smitten with her.

    • @garyarnett1220
      @garyarnett1220 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'd say a bit more than smitten since they were a couple for awhile. His song about their day to day life "Our House" is wonderful.

    Dee...the harmonies are what brought them together. They were hanging a t a house in LA and started singing together for fun, and everyone realized how wonderful they sounded together.

    Teach Your Children " is one of the songs in the movie "Melody Fair" in the 70th .This movie was about 2 very young kids who fell in love with each other. "First of May", "Melody Fair" and "To Love Somebody" by BEE GEE were the other 3 songs in this movie. If you see this movie, I think you will love these songs more.

    Remember that this song was written during the Vietnam war when the country was torn apart between an older generation supporting the war and a younger generation against the war in Vietnam.....The divide between older and younger was extremely strong and this song was an attempt to bridge that gap.

    Best trio of harmonizing! Yes it is their last names and they used it to get away from being part of other bands that they got burned out in. By naming their group by their own names they kept their own identities when they decided to do their own solo work.

    "Doves are coming out of a box." Beautifully stated. I shall make it into a work of art.
    This song also served to awaken parents into the idea that they would indeed learn from their children as well. That in turn awakened in people a sense of civilian equality rather than military or corporate hierarchy. Parents started growing their hair out and becoming more groovy and laid back.

    The pedal steel guitar was provided by none other than Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. Quite a good steel guitar player, really -- but he eventually sort of just gave it up. This song by Graham Nash became one of CSN&Y's most famous and best loved and it's easy to see why. It just exudes LOVE from the first note to the last.

  • @tdgallagher218
    @tdgallagher218 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is the only song on the LP that Neil Young does not appear on. In compensation for playing the pedal steel guitar on this song, Jerry Garcia asked for lessons in harmonizing. The reason being, The Grateful Dead were recording their acoustic LPs, Working Man's Dead and American Beauty at the time.

    No Young on this cut, the bluegrass flavor comes from Jerry Garcia (legendary Grateful Dead lead guitarist) playing pedal steel guitar. David Crosby, recently deceased, had much to do with structuring the harmonies of CSN, it's a real challenge to either pick out his part from the mix or even know for sure which part is the melody, for example on Helplessly Hoping.

    I understand where ya hear country, Back in the day only 2 types of Rock. Hard Rock and Soft Rock. This is some of the best soft rock you'll ever hear. Back in the day someone has guitar everyone sits in a circle start playing and singing . And yes gotta roll one up pass it around then someone else roll's one up and passes it the other way. (Just sayin that's the way it was for us hippies in the 70's)
    Teach your childern to be a better and kinder person for the next generation. That's what this song is about.
