Remember that this song was written during the Vietnam war when the country was torn apart between an older generation supporting the war and a younger generation against the war in Vietnam.....The divide between older and younger was extremely strong and this song was an attempt to bridge that gap.

(Just sayin that's the way it was for us hippies in the 70's) Teach your childern to be a better and kinder person for the next generation. That's what this song is about.
