This performance of the Duruflé Requiem is, in my humble opinion, the very best that I have ever heard. At the end, I was in tears-- it was that deeply moving. Astounding.
When my time is done on this planet and the angel of death swoops down silently in the night to escort me to the hereafter, I pray that he brings this music to sooth the journey into the unknown .
As an alto, prepping to sing this for the third and possibly last time, that final C# I get to sing, slays me every time. Absolutely the finest production I have heard on-line.
An exceptional performance. Chorus, orchestra and soloists meld together for a rich other-worldly experience. From sublime whispers of salvation to thundering warnings about the pits of hell. Bravo!
Singing this with my choir, can't wait! Love how the first measures sung by the male sections do resemble gregorian chant, and then it morphs into something totally different but with that persisting flavour of ancient times.
The first time I heard this performed live was for the evening service on All Saints’ Sunday. To my slight embarrassment I couldn't stop crying. The music is beautiful beyond words. I am always amazed that those who perform pieces like this can maintain their composure all throughout, especially those in the choir. And I'm pleased to see that others here who've listened to this were similarly affected.
I agree, a wonderful performance ! I prefer the version with small orchestra and organ, but maybe it is just because I am more accustomed with it. The orchestra here remains quite discrete, everything is very well balanced, really perfect and amazing !
Interesting that you should say this: also Maurice Duruflé himself preferred his (third and last) version with chamber orchestra and organ, otherwise it is exactly this version for large symphonic orchestra that he recorded himself for ERATO in the late 1960´s (reissued on CD by Erato or Virgin)
I have heard many performances of this requiem, and have been the baritone soloist. I wept buckets during the Pie Jesu. Bravo EVERYBODY who played and sang. I don't want really to single anybody out, but the conductor is brill, too.
Oh my GOD!!!! My eyes sting the whole length of this rendition. Merciful God, I thank you for giving me the privilege of finding this, for living in a time I can access and be witness through TH-cam to a sacred time while listening this gorgeous composition and performance. Thank you M. Duruflé 🙏🎶 Most wonderful rendition 🙏
Yordanka, I agree, a great performance. And if you are not already familiar with it, you might wish to check out Herbert Howells, HYMNUS PARADISI...the only other work I know which matches this one for sublimity. Enjoy!
I agree with Mezzotenor. I collect Requiem Masses (have over 100) and this remains my favourite. This is a truly moving performance of it. It does one good to think of one's mortality every so often: and to have such music to accompany those thoughts may bring real comfort. Every bit as much as one's TRUST in the Father of our Lord Jesus, The Christ.
I agree. This Requiem is a mix of gregorian songs and modern arrangements, that organists know how to do, and this is an absolute masterpiece, one of my favourite piece of music, which brings me tears everytime I listen to it. I prefer the version with smaller orchestra and organ. I think that nothing can outperform the Bach Mass in b minor, but it is in another register, like the wonderful Pergolese Stabat Mater. Jacques, from France.
Such an awe-inspiring performance. Thank you! And what a wonderful audience, too! Not a peep from them until the end. This is one of those pieces that gives me hope for humanity, even in dark times.
It never ceases to amaze me how many exceptionally talented composers, performers and orchestras there are in Poland. Even outstanding Progressive Rock bands that demonstrate both virtuosity in performance and quality songwriting. I am very familiar with this Requiem and the definitive performance is the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus conducted by the great Robert Shaw whose performances of choral music is legendary. This performance is excellent and I think Pawel Kapula has done a remarkable job both in the performance and interpretation of the music considering his age and experience. I will definitely follow his career. Hopefully he will secure a recording contract and I will not hesitate to buy his recordings. It would have been nice to have this performance on CD. It is certainly worthy of documenting the performance.
Oh, my goodness... This left me in tears. Where do I begin? Not since Dutoit and the NHK have I heard a video concert performance of this piece so seamlessly and gracefully interpreted. The youthful Maestro (who in the US would have to show proof of age to buy a beer) already has a mature mastery of ensemble and the good taste not to over-theatricalize this rich but delicate score. The orchestra is clearly blessed with technique and experience, and it will be a while before I hear a better organist or better principal players on horn or cello. The soloists are well-chosen, and I'm grateful to the choir director for training this medium-sized group to shape the plainchant (or chant-inspired) melodies in such a refined and unanimous manner. Permit me to repeat a joke from my years singing plainchant at High Mass: The only thing harder for a choir than singing in perfect harmony is singing in perfect unison. God bless you all!
Gos bless you. Your review is so true, I couldn't agree more. Thank you for your truthful words. Unison is the most difficult and beautiful to achieve in a choir.
What Mezzotenor said. I’m working my way through a book of Gregorian chants arranged for guitar, and almost all of Durufle’s thematic material is in it. It was very clever how hw arranged the chants into a symphonic work.
dear audience, the next time a requiem ends... SHUT UP!!!! For at least one minute. Let it sink in, no matter how hard it is. That's the whole point of this exercise. apart from that... magnificent. Especially that part of teasing the audience into inevitability at 43:08 before lifting us up into blissful eternity... no words!
Maurice Duruflé has recorded his own Requiem in exactly this version (for Choir, Soloists, Symphonic Orchestra and Organ) for ERATO, re-published as CD on either Erato or Virgin Classics, with the composer himself conducting and his wife (Marie-Madeleine Duruflé-Chevalier) playing the organ: it is a historic but good stereo recording and should be available for purchase online, it is definitely better than this here.
I am looking forward to one recording in which soloists for a change will NOT breathe after every third note instead of singing a phrase in one breath, as well as singing "DominE" (liturgical text) instead of "DominO" (certain game with black-white rectangular pieces): Gregorian plainchant is NOT about soloist glamour à la "Casta Diva" BUT about the meaning of a certain religious text! Otherwise, respect for conductor, choir, organist and orchestra, in particular for the 1st horn-player (the one with the black hair-band): well done!

Definitive recording of this timeless treasure. Thank you so much for sharing with the public.
The videography & audio engineering are just as outstanding as the musical performance. Again, 'definitive' is the word! Will a DVD be available?

ULTIMATE LIFE HACK. :)
And here I am again weeping with Ewa Wolak
Beautiful, thanks for posting
Ottima interpretazione di questo capolavoro
The Pie Jesus piece makes me cry and this version is absolutely wonderful.
Not the best tho

What a gorgeous performance... and by gosh, what a mezzo in the Pie Jesu.... out of this universe...
The baritone isn't so bad himself
Quite exquisite 😌

This is a wonderful recording. They make it sound so easy but having sung it myself it makes the tears run. So glad I found this.
OMG I can’t stop listening to Ewa Wolak.
The final Kyrie omg. That climax is powerful.
Wow! What a reserved audience! This wonderful performance deserved a round of rowdy applause and standing ovations.

I am an alto performing this work for the second time tomorrow! I also really love In Paradisum. It's magical ✨
One of the best versions I've heard! Major props to the sopranos for staying in tune, that part is _punishing._
