    I also realized after posting, I said the powder used was Unique 2400… I meant to say Alliant 2400. My mistake.

    Also check out John Linebaugh’s loads for the 45 Colt.

    I like the Lee .452- 300 RF (actually 315 gr. ) seated long (bottom crimp groove) over 23.5 gr of H110 for my 5.5" Blackhawk.

      I have some H110, and I tried it with some 250 XTPs. This was before I got my chrono, som don’t know what it was running. The Lee manual says it would have been in the 1400 fps range. Some heavier stuff is on down the list for future trials. Appreciate the feedback!

    I used his 20 grain load with his 250 grain swc in a winchester trapper carbine to hunt with in Africa in 2012. Worked GREAT on impala, gemsbok, and warthogs.

      That’s awesome! I’m gonna try these and all the others I’ve done in my Marlin 1894 at some point. Good stuff!

    I have used , and fired 18.5 grs. of Alliant formerly Hercules 2400 powder listed in an old article by Elmer Keith with cast 255 gr SWC Keith bullet . Elmer passed away in 1984. At some point in time. The Civil liability issues saved our reloading manuals( from reloaders ), lower powder charges were listed for 2400 in 45 Colt . I have used this load in my S&W 25.5 with five and one half inch barrel, 1990 purchase, still going strong no issues. My old model Ruger Bisley Vaquero with same barrel length in 45 Colt fires same powder charge. I wish I never tossed out my oldest Lyman Pistol Reloading Manual. Some time in the future the 2400 powder became recomended for Ruger Black Hawk only. I almost had a seizure when I heard the new prices for 45Colt ammo. I still have 200 grain Hollow point Winchester Silver Tips I saved, and 6 boxes of unffired Winchester Cowboy Ammo. When the gun control scientists started their activity, stared buying brass in 500 count lots. I sold my eight and one half inch S&W model 27 in display box , to a fellow police officer for $ 300.00 , and still want to kick myself.

    I chronographed some 45 colt loads today in my 5.5 inch bisley. Using enforcer powder, and 255 grain acme coated 255 swc, I was getting good accuracy and 1325 fps. The max load in the western powder manual for 30k psi ruger only loads is 27 grains. I was using 24. Anyway, I was impressed with this powder, thought you may want to give it a try.

      Enforcer is on my list to try. Not only for 45 Colt, but for 41 magnum whenever I get one. Thanks for the suggestion.

      @j_c_hunt works good in 41 magnum. I use it with a 250 grain cast hp from gt bullets.

    I'm wanting to get into it, but starting with 38 special and 3030 first. I enjoy these videos of yours where you test different loads.

    If you are going to get into casting I really recommend looking at accurate molds they are fantastic and worth the price I don’t think they’re that expensive but they are more than a standard mold but they have a catalog that is just full of different molds different bullets or Styles I have used them I have I think seven molds from him he always does a great job you can even get a custom mold made which I did for a 12 gauge rifled cannon that I built it works awesome.

    I've been loading 45 Colt and 44 Mag for a long time. Those are good loads you tested but your high SD may be that you need to take more care seating the bullet and yo make sure the crimp is perfect.
    Cuz I had variation in the numbers like you did too and that's what it was. First use a Lyman "M" die for lead bullets and don't over flare it but you should be able to sit a cast bullet on top the case perfectly flat.
    Then I seat them in two steps. Halfway then lower the ram and spin the case and gently seat it the rest of the way. Do not crimp at the bullet seating stage! Do it in a seperate operation.
    Awesome video man, keep it up!

    • @j_c_hunt
      @j_c_hunt  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the advice! I use Lee dies, so the seating and crimping operation are separate from one another. I’ve got my flair die setup however Lees instructions says to set it up, but I’ll play around with that and see what it does! Thanks again.

      @@j_c_hunt don't know if you cast those lead bullets yourself or not, proably not so with cast lead bullets it comes down to hpw good can the guy cast and how consistent does he keep his lead temperature at when casting? But you can find out real quick by weighing the cast lead bullets.
      Seperate the lead bullets by weight before you load them. The biggest pile of same weight bullets you can call match bullets. After all, what makes a match bullet a match bullet? Consistent weight!

    Have you checked the cylinder throats on your Ruger? You may find that the throats measure in the .451 range and the barrel grooves are 452 which can’t work well for accuracy.

    Looks like a good bear load!

    • @j_c_hunt
      @j_c_hunt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might be. A 255 SWC at 1100 would be pretty tough on a bear I guess. A 270-300 would be better at those speeds for bear? I’m not a bear load expert. Maybe someday I can check these in ballistic gel to see how deep it would penetrate.

    Some people load 40gr of fffg swiss black powder 😮. For a pretty stout load.

    I have found that 2400 burns very dirty. It's a very old powder, and there are much better performing powders for the .45 Colt.

      @@j_c_hunt for low power plinking loads I like unique or trail boss. For mid power loads I like blue dot or longshot, and for max loads AA #9, N110, Lil' Gun or H-110 will give better than .44 magnum power levels.

      Try vihtavuori 3N38. Clean, easy to measure, decoppering agent really works, good volume fill without going over pressure limits.
      That stuff used to be expensive, now everything is as expensive so why not get the premium stuff for the same cost😊
