    I followed Steph’s videos abut washing and putting heat back into your wig. The two videos worked miracles. My fav wig of 2+ years was ready to be retired permanently, until these videos! The wig is soft, easy to style and along with adding a little silicone spray to the nap of the wig made it feel brand new! I no longer felt like I was wearing a head of straw. A friend asked me today if I had bought a new wig, she was surprised when I told her it was my fav reconditioned. Thank you Steph!

It's amazing what a little care and the right techniques can do! I'm so glad your wig feels soft and easy to style again. Your friend's reaction must have felt great! Thanks for your lovely message and for trusting my tips. Keep rocking that beautiful wig! 😊❤

    This is the best tutorial I’ve seen on this subject and I’ve seen a lot! Thank you so much. It’s really heartening to know that you can keep heat friendly wigs for years by taking these steps. Better for the planet and the wallet too 😊 Simmer is my fave wig and I’m delighted to think I’ll be able to have her for a long time to come. X

    • @WigsWithSteph

      Hi Ally!! 🤗 Yay, I’m so glad you’ve found my video helpful! That brings me so much joy. Yes, I’ve had Simmer for years!!! She’s one of my all-time favourites, especially in the summertime and I don’t plan on getting rid of her any time soon 🥹 I still will just refresh her whenever I feel as though she needs it and then she’s like new again!

    • @eddieb4890
      @eddieb4890 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Steph, do you need to re-curl your Simmer when you refresh her? I've read comments on other sites that say if you use the straightener on wavy heat friendly wigs that it's near impossible to get the same curl back into them@@WigsWithSteph

    • @WigsWithSteph
      @WigsWithSteph  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@eddieb4890 Hey! Maybe you can’t get the same curl, but I’ve been able to get a wave that is very similar to the original version and it looks beautiful! (I actually like it better than the original, so I’m never frightened to take the wave out because I just put my own back in)
      I have a video on how I do this coming soon :)
      You don’t have to wave Simmer after the first couple of times you straightened her. Simmer is a synthetic wig so when you put heat on it, it’s not going to react the same way as human hair. You know when you straighten human hair it becomes straight, right? I mean, this makes sense! But with a synthetic wig, because that wig has an already set-in style, it takes a lot to move it out of that style. So as you can see in my video, when I run my straightener through the fibers, it doesn’t come completely straight. If you were to straighten the wig, a couple of times, like, let’s say, you, refresh your wig four times, yes, your wig will now be straight. It also depends how many times you run the straightener through each strand. Let’s say you’re on your very first refresh, but you run the straightener through each strand several times, you may end up, making those strands straight.
      Sometimes I have to try really hard to straighten Simmer out after I’ve waved her. If your goal is not to straighten Simmer, then make sure the heat is low and make sure you’re only running through the fibres once to refresh. But just now after a couple of refreshes, your Simmer will be straight. It’s inevitable.
      You’re not able to bring the softness back into a heat-friendly wig unless you do this method, so it kind of comes down to: Are you at the point where you’re not going to wear the wig, or it’s bothering you enough because of the tangles that you absolutely need to refresh it. And are you willing to take out the wave to do so?
      If you want to straighten Simmer, then make sure to run the straightener through each hair strand a couple of times. Hope that makes sense, and I hope this helps.
      ❤️

      Thanks Steph - always so helpful !🥰. Yep, it all makes perfect sense. I'm pretty good with a flat iron or curling wand, so if she goes straight after refreshing her a few times I'm confident I can recurl her to look nice again but understand that she wont necessarily look exactly the same.
      That's what happens when you watch too many different channels - people confuse you with all the differing opinions!!@@WigsWithSteph

    I washed and conditioned my first HF wig today and it was drying while I was watching your video. Most of my wigs are non-HF and I figured my HF wig was at the end of its life, since the fibers had been sticking together and hard to comb through…BUT decided to treat it with the same Bambu Silicon Mix conditioner I recently discovered and had used on my non-HF fibers. I washed it, rinsed, pressed the water out by laying it in a very thick microfiber towel. I coated the fibers with the Bambu Silicon Mix. Placed it in a ziplock bag for 4 hours (which can be overnight). Took out of the bag and gave it a good rinse. Patted out between a towel again and hung to dry.
    I stopped your video at 9:15 minutes and went and got the wig.
    I took a wig brush to it and saw my wig was transformed to its former days.
    So glad I won’t be needing a wig head for my HF wigs, which I’ve never used heat on. 😊

      @@eddieb4890 You would refresh a non heat friendly with the same process using the comb, but instead of using a straightener, you would use a Steamer :) I have the steamer by Jon Renau but you can even just use a more affordable version off of Amazon. There’s lots of option :) I prefer heat friendly still because it’s easier to refresh (in my mind) because my straightener is always in my bathroom- easier to pull out- and I find steam more difficult to add styles too because it’s not a straightener. I have problems with various wigs, where the ends become dry and frizzy and that does not change after washing and styling. I buy cheaper synthetic or heat friendly synthetic wigs, often on sale. Maybe that is part of the problem but I can't find that others run into that. I have a hot air brush and I am not yet brave enough to use a straightener again, because when I used mine on a particular more expensive HF wig the first time, just on the ends, it frizzed them up immediately. I guess, I am just too stupid to get it right. Any tips?

      Hey!! 😊 No, I’m not out about my wig wearing. Everybody on this channel knows, of course, but with my career (real estate) and going through my every day, it’s not something I always choose to admit. This speaks to the quality of a good wig. It will be your choice if you decide to tell people you wear wigs. If someone compliments me on my hair, I’ll either just Thank them, or I’ll thank them and let them know it’s a wig! It depends on the situation and how I’m feeling at the time 💕
      This particular wig has lasted me over 2 years with daily wear (8-12hrs a day!). She was and still is my favourite wig and for the last 2 years, I didn’t have any other wigs to switch her out with. I don’t tend to rotate wigs unless they are very similar to eachother.

When I have tried to use a straightener or curling iron the hair doesn’t just glide through them like yours did. The only thing the straightener does is straighten the curl.

    Wow, these are some really good techniques! I have used fabric softener with some of my wigs and I also never saw an issue with it. But I have never heard of using the Bonner Soap! I can see why that would be great to use as it is all natural and has softening oils in it - and you can use it on a lot of different things. I have some HF Belle Tress wigs that I need to try this with. I have seen that I have to add heat back in to my BT wigs every few wears to keep it looking good. How often are you washing your wigs; and by using the straightener, aren't you afraid of taking out the curl pattern of Simmer? I tend to buy a lot of wavy/curly wigs, and I hesitate to use a straightener to add heat back in.

    • @WigsWithSteph
      @WigsWithSteph  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, I absolutely recommend it!
      Not at all, on Simmer, I will totally take out her wave (on purpose!) to revive her and then I’ll just use the same straightener to put the wave back into her after. This is how I’ve been able to wear her every day without her weighing down. Re-styling was something I was afraid of at the beginning of my wig journey because the wigs come so beautifully styled! But the great thing about heat friendly is that you can keep changing it until it’s perfect. And after enough practice, it becomes easy. I now easily return her from wavy, to straight, to curled, to straight again, and have no issues at all. Actually, the wave on simmer in this video was my own creation! I’ve had her straight many times in the past 😊💕

      I don’t have a set “rule” as to how often I wash them. If I find a lot of makeup build up just on the lace front but the fiber is doing just fine (moving in the wind naturally / not clumping together) then I will just put the dr.Bronners soap on her lace and quickly rinse it off.
      If I wear her every day, (let’s say it’s summer and it’s been super hot) and her fiber starts to clump and get tangly, that is when I’ll wash her and refresh her with heat the next morning 😊 I hope this helps!!! Thank you so much for your comment by the way!!

    • @WigsWithSteph
      @WigsWithSteph  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say my best advice is to wash your wig when it needs to be washed. Sometimes I will go 4 weeks without washing mine! With that being said, if you’re in a dusty environment, or you’re sweating a ton, and you just feel more comfortable washing your wig more often, don’t shy away from washing it. If you then go and “refresh” your HF fibers with a straightener after washing & drying it, it will come back to life. I also have a silicone spray that I use to coat the fibers on my synthetics occasionally when I feel as though I need it. Just as up keep. I’m not somebody who will shy away from altering wigs, because ultimately if somethings bothering you with it, it makes more sense to “fix” it than to keep living with the problem.
      As far as your lace goes, if it was me I would cut it. If anything, cutting it will keep it from fraying. Cut off the least amount you can while still getting the job done 🤗❤️

      Hi Debbie!
      I totally understand your concern. Unfortunately it's inevitable. With each refresh, the original style is bound to become looser and looser. I've found it super advantageous to learn about my straightener and curler and develop some skills to help me reconstruct in this department. Which wig(s) do you currently have? I have styling videos on my channel here to help with this. And if you have a Simmer wig (like the one I feature in this video), I've actually made a video on how to get the same wave back. It is totally possible to create the same style that the wig has originally come in, but I've also found a love for making it my own. I hope you will too, as it will really help you moving forward and after refreshing a wig. Sometimes the best styles are created in our own house when we make it the way we want it to look 😃 Sometimes, this makes a wig look even MORE realistic. I'm sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear, but I do hope that you've found it a little helpful to your situation. 💜

    • @WigsWithSteph
      @WigsWithSteph  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey! =) Adding heat to a heat-friendly synthetic wig will alter your wig, BUT if you use a low heat setting, and go over it gently and not too many times, you could potentially keep the wave or curl. This is why I only begin adding heat to it when my wig is like DYING and it doesn't feel nice anymore. At this point I really don't mind if I have to re-style her. I'd rather make her feel like new again, soft and beautiful, even if it makes her straight. I can then go in again, AFTER this technique, and add curl or wave if I want =) OR leave it straight for a couple of weeks, wear her around like that (enjoy a new style!) and then put the curl or wave back in =)
      But yes, adding heat does alter the style (the memory style) of your wig.

    • @WigsWithSteph
      @WigsWithSteph  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You don’t really prevent it. When you straighten it, it’s because you need to refresh it- like you’re so annoyed with the tangling at that point that it’s bugging you and you’re only choice is to refresh it. At that point, this is the way to do it, and the wave will likely loosen. Because it’s synthetic fiber, not real hair, it reacts different to a straightener, and a quick once over ever fiber to refresh isn’t going to take the wave out completely. But after a couple of times with the straightener, it will in fact become straight. If you want a curl after that, you’ll have to put a curl back into it. Or make whatever style you want :)

      The length I go before my first wash depends on how often I’ve worn the wig and where I’ve worn the wig. If it’s a wig that I’m wearing to the gym every single evening, then it will probably need to be washed sooner then a wig where I’m not sweating as much in it, like if I’m only wearing it to work every day. My wig that lasted me two years is one that I’ve only worn to work every single day. And my first wash happened about a month and a half into owning it. I tried to push the wash as long as I could because I knew that when I did it the factory “film” would likely wash out. So that’s when I use the Simply styling spray to add it back in after refreshing it.

    How does the flat iron not straighten the curls out? That’s what I’m always worried about!

    • @WigsWithSteph
      @WigsWithSteph  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! :)
      With the synthetic wigs, they perform differently than real human hair. Because of that, you’d have to run your straightener over it quite a few times, or move it extremely slow over the fibers to make it poker straight. In this video, my intent was not to make the wig straight, but just to get the tangles, roughness out of it, and keeping the shape the best I could. By only running the straightener over once or twice, moving at the speed I did, at a low heat setting, it’s not going to straighten too much. I hope that makes sense. On the other hand, there comes a point in every wigs life where in my mind it’s better to create a new shape if it means you’ll get a wig that feels brand new again. 🥰 So, like, even if my wig does become slightly straighter when I don’t want it to, I can always go back in with the hot tools and re-create any curl or wave that I took out while refreshing 💕

    My straightener has a number dial but doesn't tell the temperature, what number should I use to put heat back in my wigs?

    • @WigsWithSteph
      @WigsWithSteph  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey! I can't be certain what each number would mean. I would suggest using a low setting, and testing a few strands. If nothing is burning off, then you're good to go! Also, make sure your wig is heat-friendly to begin with. If it's a regular synthetic wig, a straightener shouldn't be used at all.

      Is your wig a heat friendly synthetic? Mine was. If yours is too, you can put the wave back into your wig. If you wig was not heat friendly to begin with, you’ll have to use curlers to put the curl back in and use a steamer to create the wavy look again

    Why isn’t the flat iron straightening the wave? I have used a flat to intentionally straighten a wavy wig. Please explain the difference if you were trying to straighten the wig.

    • @WigsWithSteph
      @WigsWithSteph  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello =) so happy for your comment! I'm going to do my best to answer your question and explain it. I'm not trying to straighten the wig in this video. That's not my game plan with showing this technique. It's to touch the heat to the fibers and pull through them through the fine tooth comb to get the fibers to look "clean" again. With heat friendly synthetic wigs, over time they will become matted, the fibers will lose their luster, they'll clump together, and look "frayed" (especially the nape of the neck). By slowly going over the fiber with a fine tooth comb, this gets rid of that. If the goal was to straighten this wig, I'd have to run the straightener over each section probably more than once. The reason being- the heat setting is low, and the wave has been set prior- It will take more time on each strand to make it poker straight. Hope this is making sense. This wig has been straight before - by using the same technique. But with the purpose of straightening it, and I go over each section much slower, and usually curve the ends in to create some body. It's just a different purpose than what I am showing in this video =)

    Hmm. Do they make wigs that move like real hair? See how stiff the ends behave, even after the wash and re-heat? It doesn't move like real hair. You are so beautiful that I'm sure no one notices this on you... but for us plainer women, our wig hair is the spotlight and if it doesn't move right, it's obvious.

    • @WigsWithSteph
      @WigsWithSteph  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes of course they make wigs that move like real hair- both synthetic and human hair. Keep in mind in this video, I refreshed an OLD wig. It’s lasted many years past the time it’s supposed to. My purpose of this video was to show how you can extend the life of a wig when it’s on its death bed.
      Also keep in mind that people hairspray their actual hair all the time. If anything, someone may think I sprayed my hair to keep the frizz down; they’d never suspect it wasn’t real.
      On any new synthetic or human hair wig, you wouldn’t have to worry about it not moving like real hair. Wigs have come SO far that nobody ever knows. I can tell you nobody in my own personal life (who doesn’t know about my channel) has even guessed I wear wigs. Even my clients, who sit very close, across the table from me, has never known. All of this to say, you don’t have to worry about that 💜

    This was AWESOME!!! I have a Raquel Welch wig SHOW STOPPER. And I don’t know why.. but the ends are totally frazzled and frizzy.. I’ve done everything from spraying deranging spray and nothing works.. I literally just got the wig about 2 months ago, but I think it’s because I’ve had it hanging and put too much heat to it at the beginning w/out the heat resistance spray. I thought the best thing to do was to start over and wash it! I have the Estetica shampoo and conditioner… I’ll use those two.. should I spray the heat resistant spray first? Before I put the straightener? Or do what you did.. attach to the wig stand and then brush through it and then straighten it? Also, can I wash it and then hang it on a wig stand overnight? I’m really excited cause it’s my absolute favorite wig…. I loved your video so much!! It gave me so much hope!!❤️❤️❤️❤️🎂

      Absolutely, you can wash it and hang it on a wig stand over night :) that is exactly what I did (left it over night!!) except I let my wig dry upside down on a door lol
