That motherboard manufacturing process you were discussing, using solder mask and solder paste, is done on a very small scale by hand by Lada Ada at Adafruit (also in NYC!) for prototyping, and then on a small scale, but automatically by machines for all their own boards. Perhaps if you're still in the city, you should give them a shout too about popping in!
Manual solder masking demonstrated in a recent short here: th-cam.com/users/shortsMzgWaU0C_8I?feature=share

Hearing Maslow’s hierarchy used in the context of computer repair is interesting, but I guess it makes sense as a general concept. If thing B needs thing A to function, or if thing A is simply more important, then it makes sense to start with thing A. It doesn’t matter if someone’s hungry if their blood is not circulating, circulation doesn’t matter if their airway has collapsed. It does matter if there is no WiFi if the screen doesn’t work, the screen doesn’t matter if the computer can’t turn on.

@@therealb888 electronics and computer science can be entirely disjunct fields... cs should be called information science (as it is in the uk i believe) and is more akin to a subfield of discrete (pure) mathematics.
Think of it this way: info sci is like astronomy. Eelctronics is like telescopes and other tools used to study astronomy and cosmology. Many astronomers might know a thing or two about the manufacturing the equipment they use but they know more so how to operate them. It's an engineers and technicians job to assemble/repair/maintain that equipment.

Explained flux as something that allows the solder to flow better.
Main point is that it keeps air away like with welding. It doesn't let air near heated metal surfaces which would create an oxide layer on them. To which solder doesn't want to stick to. Also, helps clean a bit, since some stuff/muck floats away from the surface into or to the surface of the solution.

My roommate once left a toaster on and a cable was above it. The cable above it was for her blender. I cut the cable. Stripped the wires. Twisted them together. soldered. Then put electrical tape around the solder. Worked like a charm. It was fun.
