Moi! Mä oon varma, että teillä kaikilla on välillä sellasia hetkiä, jolloin teitä ei vaan huvita opiskella suomea. Ehkä teistä tuntuu, että te ette edisty niin nopeesti ku te haluisitte, tai teillä on vaan mitta täynnä tän mahdottoman kielen opiskelua. Tai voi olla, että teillä on muita kiireitä elämässä, eikä suomen opiskeluun tunnu vaan jäävän aikaa tai energiaa. Tässä videossa mä haluun siis puhua motivaatiosta - tai pikemminkin sen puutteesta.
Mä tunnen tän tilanteen todella hyvin, koska tää tapahtui mulle itelle espanjan kanssa. Ensi vähän taustaa, eli mä yritin alottaa espanjan opiskelun ekan kerran noin kaks vuotta sitten. Mä kuitenki päädyin aika nopeesti siihen, että todella raskas työ Euroopan parlamentissa ja uuden kielen opiskelu ei oikeen sovi hyvin yhteen. Joten mä oikeesti alotin espanjan opiskelun noin vuos sitte ku mä alotin uuden työn, koska mä aattelin että mulla on enemmän aikaa. Mä siis kuuntelin espanjaa noin puoli tuntia joka päivä suunnilleen kahen kuukauden ajan mut sit mulla oli taas kiireinen aika töissä ja se jotenki jäi. Sen jälkeen mä oon satunnaisesti opiskellu espanjaa mutta mä en oo jotenki vaan saanu motivoitua itteeni opiskelemaan sitä joka päivä.
Ja tän takia mä en tietenkään edisty enkä mä oo saavuttanu mun tavoitteita. Mä oon syyllistäny itteeni koska mä en vaan kykene opiskelemaan joka päivä niinku mä haluaisin. Ja tää syyllisyys johtaa tietenki siihen, että mun tekee vielä vähemmän mieli opiskella.
Mikä avuksi? No mä mietin asiaa ja mä tulin siihen tulokseen, että mulla ei oo mikään kiire oppia espanjaa täydellisesti. Tärkeempää on se, että mä kuitenki opiskelen säännöllisesti. Huomatkaa siis: ei joka päivä, vaan säännöllisesti.
Joten mä kysyin itteltäni: miten tää vois olla helppoa? Miten mä voin opiskella espanjaa pienimmällä vaivannäöllä, joka ei ehkä oo kaikkein tehokkain tapa - kuten kattomalla videota ja kirjottamalla ylös kaikki sanat joita mä en ymmärrä - mutta jonka mä pystyn pitämään yllä sen muutaman kuukauden ajan ku mulla on kiire tai motivaatio hukassa.
Miten tää vois olla helppoa? Ja mä tulin siihen tulokseen, että mun espanjan kielen taso on tällä hetkellä sen verran hyvä, että mä pystyn kattomaan espanjalaista sarjaa espanjankielisillä tekstityksillä niin, että mä ymmärrän sen verran et mä pystyn seuraamaan sitä, vaikka mä en kaikkea ymmärräkään. Tää ei oo mulle paras tapa oppia, koska sit mä pikemminkin luen ne tekstitykset enkä kuuntele kunnolla, mutta ainakin mä teen jotain!
Toisekseen, mun ei tarvi opiskella joka päivä. Tällä hetkellä mä pyrin kattomaan sitä sarjaa puolen tunnin ajan viitenä kertana viikossa. Ja mä oon piirtäny mun kalenteriin viis pientä laatikkoa, jotka mä saan ruksata joka kerta ku mä oon kattonu sen puoli tuntia. Ja tää toimii mulla tosi hyvin! Se ei oo enää sellanen pakko, vaan mä saan samaan aikaan huvin ja hyödyn.
Eli ensimmäinen vinkki: lopettakaa ittenne syyllistäminen. Jos te ootte vaikka päättäny että te opiskelette tunnin joka päivä, ja yhtenä päivänä te ette onnistukaan siinä, teille saattaa tulla sellanen kaikki tai ei mitään reaktio ja sit te ette opiskelekaan kokonaiseen viikkoon. Älkää siis vaatiko itteltänne liikaa. Monesti jos meistä tuntuu että meidän on pakko tehä jotain, niin sit meitä ei ainakaan huvita tehä sitä.
Sit kysykää itteltänne: miten tää vois olla helppoa? Mä oon antanu yhessä videossa vinkkejä miten lisätä suomea teidän päivään. Te voitte vaikka päättää, että te katotte joka päivä yhen videon yhen kerran. Tai että te opettelette sanomaan viis lausetta viikossa. Se ei oo paljon, mutta ainaki se on jotain. Ja sit ku teillä on taas motivaatiota, niin te voitte lisätä sitä.
Ja sit viimeseks, te päätätte ittellenne teille sopivan aikataulun ja mielellään kirjotatte sen ylös teidän kalenteriin, niin että joka kerta ku te opiskelette suomea niin te saatte tick the box! Tää voi olla kolme tai neljä kertaa viikossa, tai kaks tuntia viikossa mutta te saatte ite päättää miten te jaatte tän ajan. Tällanen joustavuus vähentää sitä “mun on pakko” tunnetta ja sit teistä tuntuukin ihan mukavalta opiskella.
Toivottavasti näistä vinkeistä oli hyötyä teille. Mä toivon, että te saatte pian teidän motivaation takasin jos se on hukassa. Ens kertaan, moikka!
The timing for this video couldn't be more perfect!
2 years ago when I returned from Finland after working there for the first time, I fell in love with the language and decided to learn Finnish. But due to the lack of good sources, my motivation dropped and I quit after a few weeks. The same thing happened last year when I went back there. This year, I found a good source (and later discovered this channel) about a month before going to Finland on a trip and started learning properly. Once I got there, I found out that I could understand bits and pieces from overhearing people and my finnish friend talking. I managed to order a few things in bars and restaurants using only finnish. All of that made me hyped up so upon returning I was studying for 2 hours every single day and I was loving it. But over time I felt like it was more and more overwhelming, and that things are becoming too complicated for me to enjoy any more, so for the past 2 weeks I barely touched any lessons, and that was only to go through the ones I already learned, and it feels like I am losing motivation by each minute that passes.

Thanks so much for teaching Finnish with the comprehensible input method!! I think it is definitely helping me. I watched Stephen Krashen explain the method in a video and he also was drawing a picture while explaining new words. Do you think you could add in props or pictures along with what you say? I think that could help us learn even better because it would engage more senses and make the videos more memorable. I hope you can consider this and thanks for teaching!

Thank you for that. It's nice to know you are human also 😊. I converse on WhatsApp with a lady in Espoo. She was born in Karelia ( when it was still Finnish) I mostly use Google translate but her way of writing doesn't always translate. Fortunately I have a Finnish friend here who sometimes helps.

Often I find that when my motivation is low it might be because the content is not interesting enough. I often find that I skip days after watching movies. Because then the next night you have to go and find another one. It's just easier to watch series, then you get into more of a good daily 'study' habit.
Mä katson sun videot vähintään joka toinen päivä ja se varmasti parantaa mun taso. Ongelma on se, että mulla ei ole yhtään henkilöitä joille mä voisin puhua suomea. Mutta mulla on motivaatiota vielä 😉

What series are you watching in Spanish? Is it MoneyHeist? hahaha. If you can watch a Spanish series with only Spanish subtitles, I think that's pretty good already, even if you don't understand 100%. Eventually you can drop the subtitles altogether.
I do feel a bit demotivated this week because I upgraded my media centre computer to windows 10 (a waste of two days right there) and "lost" all of the videos I was planning to watch, so I have to find them all again on youtube. So instead of doing > one hour per day, it was more like 20 minutes (which felt like practically nothing). But now at least I am able to watch TV with a bluetooth wireless headphones, so when my sister comes over, I can continue to study without disturbing her (I tend to study late).
I did start watching Deadwind already, although I don't understand the majority of what is being said. Having said that, I was able to recognise many words... That I can understand anything at all I suppose is kind of miraculous... I think I just need to keep re-watching your videos over and over and over again.

@@finnished It's one of the most popular spanish series so I took a guess. By the way, you can get dual language subtitles if you watch it through the chrome browser. Simply google "Language Learning with Netflix". ;-)

The sentence "mun tekee vielä vähemmän mieli opiskella" is really confusing. It doesn't seem like it makes any sense grammatically, but referring to the translation below it kinda makes sense. But how to get the meanings these sentences in daily life that "doesn't make sense"? My mother tongue is Chinese, so I basically understand how flexible grammar can be really frustrating, cuz you don't even know how to explain why it is like that. But as it is my mother tongue, everything seems natural. So I really appreciate this natural learning method, it's just like learning another language as your mother tongue. Thank you for your support! "Tehdä mieli" in Finnish means "to want something", "to fancy something". And if you say "tehdä vähemmän mieli", it means that you "want less", aka "you DON'T want" to do something... And you're right, this is probably something we wouldn't use in written language in a book for example, but in everyday language yes :)
Well we've all been there and I find that attempting to progress in three or four languages simultaneously, well, it never seems to work, so I have to leave certain languages for a month and come back to them. I find that it's just too "weird" to study all languages every single day. So I only usually ever do two maximum per day now. Then, if I get tired of one, I go to another. This also suits the way I learn, with availability of certain series on different streaming platforms. I will split this into two comments as it's too much to put in one...
Yep, I would agree with you, and nowadays I want to progress in one language at least to a relatively advanced level before even starting a new one. I listen to podcasts in different languages in the morning, always 1 language per day, and it seems to be working well!

I understood the general idea. My question is that when I am listening to your videos, for the first time, should I look at the English subtitle of the Finish one or none? When I look at the Finnish subtitle, I understand nothing! and when I look at the English, I barely hear the Finnish words (although I can recognize some!)
That's a good question! If you are a beginner, I suggest that you pause the video after each sentence. So at first you listen and read the Finnish subtitles. Then when it's paused, you can check what it means, and more specifically, what each word means. You will already remember some of the words, and when you repeat this, you will remember more and more :) Hope this helps!
I have sometimes problems with motivation but I learn Finnish everyday, even if it's just 15 min. I know if I will make a break it will be more difficult to keep the habit. It's kind of like with diet -it's easier to not eat sweets at all than letting yourself to have a cheat day from time to time XD At least for me.

0.10 (line 2 in transcript) and 2.14 (line 21): Minor point, sorry, but I'm slightly curious. The adverb 'ehkä', which appears twice, makes me wonder whether 'vissiin' and kenties' would also be acceptable here or would they sound 'precious', as we say?
Good question! In these cases, you could use 'kenties', but it's not something I use often. I think it could depend on where in Finland you come from. What comes to 'vissiin', it doesn't fit here, because it has the same meaning as 'I assume' or 'apparently'.
