For anyone new to these ovens, I have used it for years. I added two bricks for fireplaces in the bottom and it stabilizes the heat. And buy an oven thermometer, the outer one is totally incorrect. Cooks and bakes awesome.
(1) If you don't have a welding blanket, you can place a disposable aluminum roasting pan upside down over the top of the oven and it will also help hold in the heat. (2) You'll also need an independent oven thermometer because the little thermometer in the door isn't reliable. (3) And, it helps if you place a pizza stone (or a brick) in the bottom of the oven to help regulate the temperature.
Love the use of a Colman oven with blanket to help keep heat in. But covering your small cooker base, including gas cartridge portion. Is a disaster waiting to happen.. Suggest you measure temp of gas bottle ,when cooking.😢
We were the envy of the campground when mom baked jiffy mix brownies for dessert, in our Coleman oven. She missed her calling to be a spokesperson for them. So many people bought them after talking to her😊😊.
When I make my banana nut bread, I replace the oil with apple sauce. Easy to buy the 6 pack of individual cup apple sauce. May be worth a try here too.
For anyone with a HarvestRite freeze drier - there is a software update available AND you can upgrade your model for additional trays. The small model can hold 4 trays and the medium moves up to 5 trays and so on.
Good morning Pam. I’ve had this little oven for years. What I do to prevent over cooking on the bottom is I bought a pizza stone sized for a toaster oven on the bottom. It really stabilizes the temp of the oven too. Love you posts. God bless you
Prof Pam⚘️. Thank you for this demonstration....I am now alone 😢 and I was so hesitant to use many of the outdoor kitchen items propane or butane...I have the little Coleman stove and I am ordering the oven right now... Thank you #teamcantrell Blessings ❤ P.S. After watching you cook on the Coleman stove 2 yrs ago, I bought one..Thank you Lord, because when the Horrid storm hit Tulsa, NO water, gas, propane, power for 8 days; I wrote to you I was able to feed my neighbors/ friends from my pressure canned foods on my little Coleman...Thank you Jim and Pam, please know, I have learned so many life sustaining ways from you. BE CERTAIN You are making a Big Difference in our world..Please Know You are Dearly Appreciated and Loved.💛💛
See caution below 🔥🔥🔥⚠️Welding blanket great idea! I put a 9 inch pizza stone in the bottoms of mine to help even the heat. I also use a oven thermometer because of found the one on the oven inconsistent but the blanket might solve that. I have a graniteware dutch oven that fits in the oven I can make a rustic loaf of bread in it. I also picked up the small cheap disposable loaf tins & cake tins at Walmart to save on clean up. 🔥🔥🔥⚠️ I would caution that the oven sits over the butane can compartment which can make it hot and risk the can exploding if it gets too hot. I'd keep cook times short if your not using the actual Coleman stove.
We were without power for about 48hrs. No worries, I got out both butane stoves. We had fresh coffee, bacon and eggs, toast (made in the skillet) the first meal after power went out. I was wondering how that little oven we bought oh just over a decade ago and have never used it, would work on one of those little stoves. I can see I need to find a welding blanket and an additional butane stove to be dedicated for baking. I can’t thank the both of you for sharing so many things that will help everyone out in hard times. Bless you both.
I bought the Coleman Oven a few years back and one of things I did it was a meat loaf - I had it set up on a butane stove also - I recall it being a cool windy day and wrapped the oven in tin foil along with wrapping the butane stove to keep the flame from going out any ways, 45 mins later and 3/4 of a can of butane the loaf was cooked and tasted wonderful.
You could also use your reconstituted powdered eggs. Chances are if you were forced to go off grid your freezer would be inaccessible w/o a generator to back it up.
We use two fire bricks in the bottom of our Coleman oven. They are a perfect fit. We then use a small pizza stone under the pan we are baking in. Works like a charm!
We have a single burner butane cook stove too. I didn't realize you could put the camp oven over the heat shield where the butane bottle installs. Thank you I learned something from you today.
If you don’t have frozen, fresh, or powdered eggs you can substitute 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce, 1 medium mashed banana, Aquafaba (chick pea liquid -3TB), chia seeds and flax seeds (1 Tb ground seed and 3 TB water). These measurements are substitutes for 1 egg so you would have to multiply per egg needed. Also you will have to test to see which substitution will work best with your recipe.
I can't thank you enough for showing everyone this.I bought one of these ovens for my preps about a year ago and I even took it with me to MWPP spring festival but didn't have a chance to use it. This video gave me additional tips for using it.
I have a WW2 version of this stove which I use a-top my log burner - it’s been used in many a power cut to make all sorts of meals. I’m very pleased with mine indeed!
When camping I used to set up a folding card table and hang a bed canopy mosquito net from a tree branch and cover the table and chairs. This kept all bugs away while preparing and eating food.
Thank you. With all the things going on with the cooking today, this is what would be happening when you would need to use it. Love the series. God Bless and stay safe.
Hi Pam I've been using my little Coleman camp oven for about 20 years now and it's been wonderful. I've made lots of bread and muffins, cookies baked pork chops and baked potatoes. I've used it on an open fire pit with Hot coals beautiful
Oh great to hear you use it over a fire... I have just ordered one but realised it's not safe to use over my single ring gas canister stove because of the canister overheating. I do have two of the same canister single ring one and wondered if I put them side but side and spread the oven over both if that would work, neither canister would be under the heat then.. will have to see when the oven arrives! I have a small BBQ thing- that I've never actually used and wondered if I could use that as the heat source - save me having to buy, find a single ring stove that hooks to a small gaz cylinder.. I've never used one of them.
Thank you Pam and Jim for this very informative video. I just bought it in your store. Yes, I think this is a very important Coleman Camp Oven accessory for more even and better baking. I also think you plastic box ideas is wonderful. I am going to do it for two weeks. I have food storage but not organized like that, so this will be a nice thing to have and not have to think and menu plan. Love these ideas. ❤
I bought this same oven for our emergency "kit", and I've never used it. I'm so happy you are using yours and giving us some tips on how to be more efficient with the oven. I also noticed some other posts with other ideas, besides the insulated blanket, to help with efficiency. If you've made other recipes with this oven, like bread, I'd like to go back and search for them. The oven did a much better job than I ever thought it would!
I already had this little oven but had not tried using it yet. Ordered the pizza tiles and medium weight welding blanket off your Amazon page. Got the tiles yesterday but welding blanket won’t come until this weekend. My 6 muffin pans are too big so I will need to find some smaller ones. Love your videos and then love trying your ideas out!!
When I first started prepping, cooking was one of my priorities. I did not want to have to store fuel because it could be dangerous. I bought a medium sized Bluetti on closeout over a year ago. It only has a 1000 watt inverter. My toaster oven required too much energy and would not work with it. I bought a small toaster oven on sale from Best Buy. They also sell them at Walmart. It worked with my Bluetti. I am going to bake with it over the weekend. It probably would use up a lot of watt hours, but I am sure it would be another option. And you can do it indoors, away from the bugs.
Pam, add a small, square pizza stone to the bottom of the Coleman oven to modulate the temperature, preventing burning on the bottom of what you bake. Thank you for showing that it isn't necessary, or even desirable, to sew the welding blanket into a cube with a flap in the front. I've been postponing purchasing a blanket for a couple years, due to my lack of confidence in sewing such a thick material.
Perhap using staples? Or I use upholstry needles and waxed thread for tough jobs (they are curved) and pin nose pliers for pushing and pulling the needle.
That is great information. Thank you. I think if it was just a 3 day power outage I would not bake anything though. If I was at home I would need to eat from the fridge/pantry. So to not have stuff spoil. If I had to leave all of a sudden ( fire-flood ) etc. Then I would want light weight food options. Things in tetra packs. Etc.. That would be an interesting video. I know they have fish and things in light weight containers. The less weight and easiest to heat/cook the better.
This is on my Amazon wish list. Hoping to get for Christmas. 🤞. I was fortunate enough to get two Coleman single burners for $10 each on FB marketplace. Best purchase ever. He had three, kinda wish I’d bought all three, lol.
Hi Pam & Jim thanks for taking us out in your back patio to show us your never tried before muffin mix cup cakes. Im hungry now lol. Say i heard ( i haven't tried jet) that chia seeds can be an egg substitute & i thought since this do not need refrigerating then maybe good for preping for recipes that call for eggs. Maybe someone may have the measurements for 1 egg . Thanks again Blessings 🙏 ❤
I have used my Coleman oven for years when camping. It fits well on my 2 burner camp stove and something can still be cooked in the other eye. With the prepared muffin mixes, I usually make a cake in a square or round pan instead of the muffins. Less time than having to cook 2 muffin pans. I make pizza, cook casseroles, cinnamon rolls, whatever would be cooked in a regular oven. I have a piece of heavy-duty aluminum foil that goes over the top & sides to prevent heat loss. I like the idea of the welding blanket though! Wonder if it could be used to put out a fire??? I also had never thought of using the stove on a rocket stove...I may try it on my Kelly Kettle!!! Thanks for your video!
Look good. I do have to disagree with you Is propane stove. There is no difference using a propane stove indoors as it is using a gas propane permanent stove in your house. It is a matter of just being safe.
10:58 😂 and now you know why we have such a significant societal addiction to highly processed quick-prep foods 😉 I like the little oven. I love my Dutch ovens as well, but this Coleman oven offers some benefits that my Dutch ovens don’t.

The thing I have found when using this oven is that the gauge is really not accurate and the temp is much higher than you think. I see a lot of videos on this stove and some have over done their food, because they trust the gauge to much. It is only a reference guide for the temp! Lol!😅
Hi Pam, I really love the stove, thanks for showing it! I have a question about the frozen eggs. Isn’t this supposed to be off grid? He would you keep them frozen in a power outage?
Mine always overcooked (burnt) on the bottom of the food. Other than a pizza stone, what would you use to diffuse the heat. I just gave my daughter my pizza stone a few months back!
What about the heat of the oven oven the gaz canister... or is your stove linked to a small cylinder? I heard that the canister can overheat under the oven and could explode. .

Have you looked at the "Haines 2.0 Solar cooker"? It too, is a solar cooker, costs less than $100, and actually works quite well. It definitely is not as versital as the All American solar cooker, but it does have it's place in the cooking world. If you want to make bread with it, I would suggest you try the round loaf, more artisan type, breads. Good luck! Hope this helps!
I'm confused. I thought these 3 days of meals was strictly from the store with no refrigeration! How can you use frozen eggs if you are simulating no electricity?
You make a good point. But you could have a cooler that you would fill with ice to keep them cold (or defrost) after you pull the out of the freezer once the power goes down. Jim
I am assuming you are using a butane burner to set the oven on. At what temp do you set the burner? Do you think this would work on a single electric burner that I would plug into my solar generator?
Just my 2 cents worth...... We have a Coleman oven and I have used it over a propane stove (dual burner), a butane stove (single burner), a fire pit (campground type), and over a charcoal burner grill (campground). Each burned differently, but you had to control the flame for it to heat adequately. I do not believe that electric heat burners could produce sufficient heat to adequately heat up the oven. But that's just my opinion. Good luck!
I have never understood why people do not first put in all the liquids and mix them, then add in the powders. Easier to mix, and you don't have to over mix it to get out the lumps! AARGH!
For anyone new to these ovens, I have used it for years. I added two bricks for fireplaces in the bottom and it stabilizes the heat. And buy an oven thermometer, the outer one is totally incorrect. Cooks and bakes awesome.

How many of the cups do you use?

Equal amounts..
8 Oz of oil = 8 Oz of applesauce
@@donnamerritt9634 Ty
You can make that same substitution with almost all baking, not just banana bread.
Just sub equal parts unsweetened applesauce for the cooking oil.
For anyone with a HarvestRite freeze drier - there is a software update available AND you can upgrade your model for additional trays. The small model can hold 4 trays and the medium moves up to 5 trays and so on.
Wow, thanks Kelly!

Yes, Pizza Stone! 🍕
Great tip!
I was going to make the same suggestion. That is my setup.
How do you keep the bottom of the little oven stable on the burner? Mine wants to move.
If eggs arent available, you can use "flax eggs" for baking: 1 "egg" = 1 T. Ground flaxseed + 3T. Water.
Prof Pam⚘️. Thank you for this demonstration....I am now alone 😢 and I was so hesitant to use many of the outdoor kitchen items propane or butane...I have the little Coleman stove and I am ordering the oven right now...

I found a mini charcoal grill that someone put to the curb so we picked it up. Only need charcoal instead of butane.
That is a great stove too. Colemans
Fantastic to hear. ❤️

I found one of theses in my late parents camping supplies( maybe from the late 60's) . i cant' wait to try it. 😁❤
I just picked up a brand-new oven at the Goodwill.
I got this little oven to use but I never thought about the welding blanket. Thank you for showing us how to use it. 😊
That oven is amazing. Nice.
Jim and Pam, thank you. I bought the oven as well. Now I can feel confident taking it camping again soon.
Pam
Try using an ice cream scoop to fill your muffin tins. Equal portions each time.

Thank you for so much info on this oven. I am making consideration for a purchase, and this was timely.
I'm glad I found this video. I bought a camp stove a few years ago. But I never used it. This video is great. Thanks
Great video! I just did breakfast last weekend on one of those burners to test. I think I need to add one of those ovens to the preps, great idea!

Yes, we had problems with our smaller Bluettis, depending upon what we attempted to use. Jim
I have a coleman stove that I haven't used yet...looking forward to see you bake bread in one.
Pam, add a small, square pizza stone to the bottom of the Coleman oven to modulate the temperature, preventing burning on the bottom of what you bake. Thank you for showing that it isn't necessary, or even desirable, to sew the welding blanket into a cube with a flap in the front. I think you would use thicker needle.
Perhap using staples? Or I use upholstry needles and waxed thread for tough jobs (they are curved) and pin nose pliers for pushing and pulling the needle.
Should show people how to make Ash Bread
I use mine on my gas stove when I have something small to bake or roast, instead of my large oven
Note:: I have natural gas stove.

Looking forward to when you get yourself a Cobb oven.
Great demo thankyou 🌟
If we don’t want to bother taking eggs with us, for baking we substitute with a flax substitute (for one egg = 1 T ground flax to 3 T water)

I have an old alcohol stove. I read it's important to have a lot of ventilation

I bought a welding blanket to insulate our Coleman oven. It should keep the heat in much better than bare aluminum.
That's a great idea! Jim
I would be interested to find out how high you set your burner. And how do you maintain the temperature in the oven? Do you have to do a lot of flame adjustments?
Thanks
Thanks for the blanket idea! Willl one of the fire blankets work? I have one at home and one in the car!
The thing I have found when using this oven is that the gauge is really not accurate and the temp is much higher than you think. I see a lot of videos on this stove and some have over done their food, because they trust the gauge to much. It is only a reference guide for the temp! Lol!😅

I have never understood why people do not first put in all the liquids and mix them, then add in the powders. Easier to mix, and you don't have to over mix it to get out the lumps! AARGH!
