Platt and Matix both took a total of 18 hits. One took 12 the other 6. They were not wearing vests or on drugs and still killed 2 agents and wounded several others. When it was over one of the agents said we knew they were dying but they were not dying fast enough. It was extraordinary and extremely violent and frightening as hell.
What a mess. Too bad they didn’t have night of the living dead machine gun guy on their side. They should have at least had those magnetic red cop lights. Maybe then machine gun guy would not bother going all zombie on everyone.
5:12 For those that didn't watch, Paul Herrel comments on this particular scene on his review. There are some critics that could argue that the cop in this scene was a "coward" for running away from the gunfight. However, the only option he had was fleeing to save his life, since he was nearly at gunpoint by the criminals.
He was the one agent named Richard Manauzi who lost his service revolver during the car chase; he was unarmed at the time, because I think his gun had been knocked out of his car, as he had placed it on the front passenger seat, and as a result, when he collided with the suspect's car, his gun went flying out of the car. He was unarmed; luckily, all of the other agents were armed at least.

The FBI analyzed this incident, changed their training, and passed it on to all other LEO departments. Their reenactment scared the Hell out of me as a young officer 30+ years ago, and really made me take training seriously.
I know most people say "thank you for your service" to military, but i think very highly of law enforcement as well(unless they're crooked). So thanks to you officers out there for what you do. Its very underappreciated especially today.
I was working out of the NE Station in Houston Texas when this went down...I still cringe when I see this and the North Hollywood bank shoot-out in 1997.
Another scary one from my academy class in 1980 was the California Highway Patrol shootout in Newhall. They lost 4 and were 15 seconds away from losing 2 more.
I remember reading the report of this incident while I was an officer with a large town department. Scared the hell out of me and made me sure to be extra careful when dealing with all traffic stops and calls. I carry a sadness with me to this day that this could have been anyone anywhere. God Bless those brave agents.
This agent really had terrible vision and was nearly helpless when he lost his glasses. Another agent put his revolver between his legs before his vehicle crashed, and lost it upon impact.
I am a life long shooter, and back then, I used to go shooting a lot. I just happened to be working about 200 yards from this gunfight, on that street, 82nd. Ave and S.W. 120 St., I saw the whole thing that day, it lasted about 7 minutes, that's a really long time. They filmed this at another location, probably didn't want to go back there. For about a half hour after the shooting stopped, I stood there with a friend of mine and watched about 150 cop cars show up, mostly unmarked, a steady stream of them, I didn't know we had that many cops in this town, they must have come from far away to get as many as I saw that day. They closed down US-1 to land the big rescue chopper, to haul off the wounded, it was really something to see. We couldn't believe it at the time. Later I got more details about what happened, but I saw what happened, I just didn't understand it all at the time. I was at the other end of the road from that crowd of people, only 2 or 3 of us were standing there but like I said, soon, the cops from all over the county showed, too late to help. The bottom line is the bad guy had a rifle, way more accurate and devastating and the cops just had 4 inch barrels and pistol rounds, that's not a fair fight at any distance but at 20 yards, it's horrific because the rifle can't miss and the pistol can't hit (easily). That shotgun was not a (big) factor and all the demolition derby didn't happen, just one crash and done. That was the day after my 29th birthday, I remember it well, like it was just last month. A bad day.
@@mrpilkington9710 the FBI had only two shotguns, but the bad guy had a semi-auto rifle shooting .223 Remington rounds. Back then FBI had also AR-15/M16, but not the people involved in the shootout. The FBI revolvers sucked and they are very slow to reload.

I met Agent Mireles at the FBI Academy in 1999, before he retired. He had pretty good function of his arm at the time, which had been shattered in the shootout. A true warrior. In the same meeting, I was able to hold Agent Dove's 9 mm, which had been rendered inoperable before he had been murdered during the shootout.
This incident not only lead to police departments to upgrade their firearms from revolvers to semi automatic weapons and the fbi working with local, county, state law enforcement agencies whenever they came into their jurisdictions because back then the fbi didn’t let them know they was coming into town.
Louis. If Platte had an M 16, that's probably what would have happened. It happened to me 3 times in Vietnam, and I went to an M 14 and never looked back. Notice Platte had a mini 14 instead of M 16. He'd probably had the same trouble I had. If he'd had one of the new M 1 A shorties (308) the FBI wouldn't have had a chance. Don't piss off an old Ranger.
The newer M16s with chrome lined barrels and chambers are a lot better than the ones used in most of the Vietnam war(At the very end of the war the M16A1 which was chrome lined came) remember that.
Exactly there origins were Swiss cheese but they were able to press on. Unsure at what level there blood loss was but how many times have hunters blown out a deer vital origins just to watch the deer sprint away for km's on end before it dies. Unless one takes out the computer *head shot* its not over. I think things could of gone better if more officers had shotguns.

I remember watching this tv movie when I was a kid. For it's time, it was a very brutal display of an iconic shootout that every FBI agent studies. Love the choice of actors as bad guys!! I was actually 21 when this came out.

you could also blame the military for training these two for an unnecessary war. they were after all rangers considered highly proficient in the field. which probably explains their ability to fight after the wounds they both received

Hi Bo a little more info, the best shooter there with the FBI lost his glasses in the banging of cars prior to the shoot out and had very poor vision without them. I am sure the FBI would have done better with him in the fight..
What’s really sickening to me is the determination to kill persists even when they’re struggling to simply stand upright because they’re so full of holes. That was the lethal shot at 6:30 that eventually killed Platt, collapsing and filling his lung with blood; that he was still able to slowly walk up to the agents and put one bullet in the chest of one and two through the head of another afterwards as he was dying in agony is truly horrific and a testament to the hatred he held towards cops.
Most likely there he started to fight in a violent and erratic way since he knew that the shooting was only going to come out in a bag, so he decided to take as many agents as he could to hell.
wrong. the lung hit occurred as he crawled out thru the car window. the same bullet severed his brachial artery. No other serious hit occured until thre 3 execution shots were fired into his head from 3 ft away, after he was unarmed, bled out, helpless. Then Mirules executed Matix, who was also unarmed, bled out and had not been in the fight for over 3 minutes.
Platt and Matix were the kind of guys who'd laugh if you put a shotgun barrel against their foreheads and told them to cuff up. In those days, the FBI (and police forces in general) were poorly prepared to deal with guys like that. Most bank robbers then, and now, don't actually WANT or PLAN to die; the mission is the money and the guns are the tool. Unfortunately for the Feds, they'd run into a rare thing: a Folie à Deux combination pair of psychopaths on a killing spree. Unknown to the agents, Platt and Matix had already cold-bloodedly murdered each others wives and several random poor schmucks who'd crossed them. They were merely using bank robbery as part of their final "ride to death" spree of violence and antisocial hatred, expecting they'd up in a climactic gunfight to the death at some point and take a few cops with them to Hell. It's uncommon for psychopaths to team up like that, but they leave 2x as much wreckage when they do. Another example a few years later was Phillips and Mataseranu at the North Hollywood Shootout.

No, marksmanship is naturally bad in real firefights. The real problem was failure to update their technology. Revolvers had been obsolete for law enforcement purposes for a long time, even before the shootout.

The only major inaccuracies that I noticed was that one of the suspects has a automatic Mini-14 as where he had a semi-automatic Mini-14 in the actual shooting.

Massad Ayoob wrote what I believe to be the best, detailed report on the FBI Miami Shootout. This movie got it amazingly accurate but I recommend for any and all shooters, LEO or Armed Security Officers to read the "Ayoob Files" and "In the Gravest Extreme" also by Massad Ayoob. Gravest Extreme had just came out when I went to the Academy 35 years ago and was required reading. Little has changed but Read the Ayoob Files for the best narrative on this shootout and the Newhall Incident (CHP lost 4 officers). My mother worked for the CHP when Newhall occurred in 1970 and I went to the Academy in Central California ten years later. This Movie actually got it quite right and is worth a watch. Remember that Ammo has changed a LOT since 1986 and modern 9mm is a lot more effective, still a .223 has awesome stopping power when compared to ANY pistol including .45 acp or even .44 magnum. Rifles and shotguns just plain beat pistols, hands down...
Its seems so silly, but in todays world we know so much better. I am not an officer but it seems the common sense thing to do once a rifle was seen being loaded would be to keep distant and coordinate with the far off backup hopefully to tail and intercept the suspects at their target bank or destination or a highway had a chase ensued. Disregarded the "heading towards busy roadways." As the suspect had already been on busy roadway where they were priorly prepared to engage. The thinking is that even a hunting rifle or lever action would pose a serious threat to pistol packing agents behind sheet metal car doors. And that its best to wait for more units/ specialized units.
+sudilos117 You are absolutely right. Take solid cover and fire enough rounds to keep the subjects "pinned down". You could have 3-4 cops there in a couple of minutes and two dozen cops there in a half hour. "Bravery" rather than discretion has got a lot of good men killed.
randy109-Mattix only got one round off on the shotgun during the whole firefight from what I located online today. Most reenactments including this movie have that wrong but the rest of the firefight details presented here are fairly accurate from what I read.
the 223, using ball ammo, is NOT a batter manstopper than 180 gr jhp 44 mags in a 6" barrel. They are both massively effective. 240 gr .44's often fail to expand, especially from 4" barrels. The nneeded velocity just isn't present
I remember having In Service Training with my Department not long after this happened. Like many LEO agencies, we got the initial reports of the gunfight parameters and weaponry as well as tactics employed. What I found remarkable was that while I had always carried at LEAST two handguns and significant ammo in magazines (I carried a Colt M1911A1 as my primary and a Colt Officers Model as my backup/ankle gun, both in .45ACP) and I wore my issued bullet proof vest WHENEVER I was on uniformed duty as well as when I worked U.C. or Plain Clothes assisting other agencies, but many (!) of my fellow deputies hated to wear their vests and it was far and few between when another Deputy would admit to carrying at least one backup handgun. (And all that doesn't cover the high powered rifle I carried in my marked unit along with a 12-gauge pump action shotgun. But after the in-service training and discussions about the Miami incident, our Training Division had to post many additional range sessions for the guys who felt that they wanted to furthermore carry a backup pistol or revolver on duty. We were required to qualify with whatever guns we carried either on-duty or off duty, so there were a LOT of eyes opened and better armed Deputies after that. As an aside, all the "Old Head" Deputies as well as some of the younger guys, who would chide me for having at least two semiautomatic pistols on my person as well as SIX (6) spare mags (for a total of just about 60 rounds of .45ACP ammo) would look at me with a different perspective. It wasn't that I was actively LOOKING to get into a gunfight but being stationed on an area known for considerable drug smuggling and bad guys who would rather shoot it out than be arrested and go to prison, meant that a backup Deputy could be half an hour away, so I didn't want to die for lack of not having enough ammo or guns, as some would say. It bears mentioning that in addition to all the loaded magazines and handguns I carried, I always had an additional 100 rounds of ammo in a bag I could grab and go if I had to un-ass an area for some reason. But IF I knew I might be walking into a situation where trouble was possible, I would grab my Riot Shotgun and a couple spare boxes of buckshot (25 rounds per box) as well as at least 5 extra boxes of slugs (5 rounds per box for a total of 25 rounds), all of which I'd transfer to a modest backpack that also included binoculars, camo wrap and about 1 gallon of drinking water along with some high-energy snacks should I need to spend the night in a hidy hole waiting to catch some bad guys. It goes without saying that as a Medic (another side duty) I carried a small Trauma kit for gunshots as well as a Boo Boo kit for little ouchies. Back to the Miami shoot out, it turns out the ammo the FBI Agents were carrying was a style thought (?) to have good properties for taking out criminals but in reality they weren't particularly effective. Having said that we all ultimately learned that the criminals in the Miami Shootout were essentially Walking Dead but so pumped up on adrenaline that they were able to continue to move and shoot, albeit at a greatly reduced ability, luckily for Agent Mireles (the man with the shotgun behind the trunk of one car). And while I am no longer involved in Law Enforcement, I am thankful that the ammunition companies have created greatly (!) more effective antipersonnel ammo that is far more effective than ammo of years ago. Our Men and Women wearing the Badge deserve the very BEST equipment and ammunition to do their job and if need be to put down a criminal with as few rounds being fired and minimal collateral damage potential if tons of bullets are flying. EVERY single round must be OWNED by someone so the fewer it takes to get the job done, the better.

oh shit except the most recent UPS shootout in miami where in contrast to the agents of Miami dade picked an incredibly poor spot to start a shootout resulting in a civilian being shot. 200+ rounds on a busy fucking highway. They "are great at setting up perimeters" my fucking ass they put countless lives in danger.

I thought the FBI learned way back in the mid 1930s never to be outgunned again. Even in the old movie "G Men", the FBI was armed with sub machine guns. In this incident, there was only one guy armed with anything more powerful than a handgun; the guy with the shotgun. That guy's left arm was rendered useless early on, which forced him to use his shotgun with one arm. One of the bad guys was armed with a semi auto rifle and a huge magazine. All by himself, he outgunned a bunch of FBI armed with pistols and revolvers.
I think fire discipline was a bigger issue. All the FBI agents shot up their first load of ammo in 16 seconds. Then they all reloaded and shot up all of their back-up ammo in 14 seconds. No fire discipline, no cover fire, no consolidation of position, no movement to hard cover, no holding the criminals at bay until back-up arrived, ... nothing. By the way, two agents en route only a mile and a half away had full auto MP5s.
Late, but for the record: The agents armed with machine guns did not participate in this event because they where poorly placed and did not arrive in time. Many of the casualties and poor marksmanship displayed here where due to poor planning.
@@garypulliam3740 they completely missed the robbers with over 70 shots at 6m and less. except for one head hit on Matix and the arm/lung hit on Platt and the 3 each execution shots as they sat unarmed, bled-out and helpless, all the hits on the robbers were peripheral or only 1" deep Not one of the 7 plus p lhps fired at their skulls pierced their craniums. One each was deflected down into their necks and bled them out. 6 of those were from a 4" barrel and 6 ft away, but had to pierce a windshield first, One, from 5m, from a 2" barrel, hit nothing but Matix's skull. the .38 is a VERY weak cartridge. Liberty Arms 50 gr, 2000 fps solid copper 9mm hp puts all .38 loads to shame. This is because the SAAMI chamber spec pressures in the US are so VERY low for .38. They are 50% higher for 9mm
I was a friend of an Instructor at the FBI (at Quantico, Virginia), was one of the instructors that trained the new agents about the Miami Shootout. He provided me with an FBI film for a seminar that I was doing for our club on the subject of the Miami shootout. He did the speaking and the seminar....I ran the film! I remember watching this on tv in 88, thinking how graphic it was. Never saw it since then until today but I always remembered the line 'Where did THAT come from?'.
That's about when I watched it with my father who was a retired chief of police and I spent a few years working as an officer for him. Lost him to lung cancer in 94. Like you that was the last time I ever saw it. That line stuck with me too, "where did that come from?"
Ed Mireles (the guy in the red jacket who uses his shotgun against the robbers) recently published a book detailing the true story of this event. One of the biggest inaccuracies in this movie is how toned down the violence was. When Mireles got shot and hit the ground, the .223 round almost severed his arm from his body. It was literally hanging on by just a thin sliver of muscle and flesh and looked like ground beef. The second shot that struck him in the head stripped the skin to the bone, went from the upper left part of his head and exited above the left ear, and severed an artery. It was pure chance that as Mireles was trying to get his bearings, he realized he saw blood spurting out of the left side of his vision and started feeling around his head for the wound. When he touched the injury, he accidentally moved a flap of skin into place to cover the severed artery and slowed down the bleeding to a survivable rate.
Thanks to Paul Harrell I not only found out about this event but also found out any of those officers hiding behind just a door wouldn't have been safe. You gotta hide behind the engine block. So how'd we do?
30 years ago, a firefight in Miami became a watershed marker in law enforcement history. It also provide proof that a spirited soldier can overcome adversities and accomplish their mission, despite being mortally wounded. April 11th 1986, two former Army Military Police- now bank robbers- were being stalked by a team of FBI investigators who specialized in Complex Robberies. After months of eluding the local authorities and the FBI, the bank robbers were finally on the radar. The following video is from a "hard to find" tv movie. The teleplay provided a near identical representation of what conspired of that takedown. In the end, two FBI agents were killed, 5 others were seriously wounded and the bank robbers eventually died of their wounds. Yet, it was the will of one robber that turned this text book felony ambush to a most studied and painful lessons in FBI AND Law enforcement history.
they didn't achieve their mission…what most likely caused their ability to fight was controlled adrenaline highs. their training causing less than average anxious heart rates, and less than average blood loss. it's easier to argue the army is to blame at that point for why they hadn't gone down sooner. also, weren't they rangers, not military police?
Its not about the good guy or the bad guy, but the tactics employed. Change the rolls and the outcome is the same. Only God can judge, we only send them to him, or her, or it, or...
I was six or seven when my dad, as an instructor at the Ontario Police College, allowed us to watch this. It was an instructional/documentary version that broke down the process of the shoot-out, with commentary. I believe he was watching it in order to assess it and use it for one of his classes. Several of the hard lessons learned from this event included the issue of inter-department communication--the local law enforcement was not overly aware of the FBI operation, and thus were unable to respond or assist (and arrived at the situation not knowing what was going on); the need to maintain situation awareness (the two agents who were killed were pre-occupied with a jammed weapon, while failing to observe Platt approach them); resource and fire discipline; as well as the obvious need for balanced and proper firepower, and body protection It should be noted that there were 5 other FBI cars heading to scene, two which had HK MP5s, an M16, and shotguns. Had one or two of these additional vehicles been involved, or substituted for one or two of the on-scene vehicles, the outcome of the shootout could have been much different. Some of the agents involved in the shooting had ballistic armour in their trunks--only two were wearing any during the shootout, and both were relatively light--however, given that three of the early injuries received by officers were to unprotected areas of the body (arm, hand, neck), the best speculation with the BA is that it would have changed the movement and set up of the agents, which can fully change, for better or worse, the dynamics of the battle.
30second the body armor of the officers present was only for pistol rounds and did not have plates inserted (or available ...this was the 80's) moreover, the agents on the arrest team walked right by lockers with long weapons in them but did not take them. the agents had no plan except that ridiculous veh ramming stunt that nearly got them all killed and body armor would not have changed events at all.l lastly, the weapon off SA Dove was Not jammed ....it was simply empty of ammunition
Another lesson that came out of that was a behavioral conditioning situation that actually occurs during live fire training on the range. At the time the FBI as well as many LEO’s carried revolvers. During live fire training they would empty their weapons by ejecting the empty brass in their other hand. The after action report stated that one of the agents killed behind his car was reloading when one of the SUBJECTS walked up to him and shot him. The report went on to say the dead agent was found with a hand full of the empty brass he had fired. I remember this because at the time I was an agent carrying the .38 we were all being retrained to let them just drop while going for our speed loader. Those poor guys may have out numbered the bad guys but the agents were out gunned. It took longer than I cared but because of that shootout we went to the 1911 .45 ACP and carried it cocked n locked made my day because I never had much faith in the .38 FMJ regulation carry. That was a terrible tragedy but overall a lot of badly needed changes and training came out of it. No telling how many lives were saved.

In the end Mireles basically walked up to the car and emptied his .357 into it, hitting Matix (The Dad from Family Ties, LOL!) in the face 3 times (brutal ... hit in the face 3 times with a .357!!) and Platt once in the chest. They said Platt was a dead man walking after the first or second bullet wound but kept on going to kill those two agents. It's a good but morbid read.
+Takingout thetrash Odd that the scene indicates the agents knew that the suspects were heavily armed and still attempted to apprehend with handguns. The script threw in some b.s. about keeping them away from the public. This was simply botched. At best it was a cowboy or two that talked tough and wanted to back it up (showing off) thinking there was a chance the suspects would just throw their hands up as most probably do. What impressed me was the good acting by Soul and Gross.

I was sitting by the Pool at Watertown Apartments chatting with another resident when we heard all of those shots.We heard lots of sirens afterwards as well but I did not know what had happened until later on the local news.I was happy I was not closer or in the line of Fire.It was a hard lesson for Law Enforcement but in the long run I’m guessing it has saved many more lives since then.
Jerry Dove passes The FBI litmus test when McNeil ask him " your not afraid of guns are you?." Dove replies " yes sir I am ", McNeil replies gooooood. An anti gun movie to be sure. They even had the mini-14 converted to full automatic when it never was. Outside of that the ending shootout was fairly accurate. I had a lot of empathy and respect for these guy that went through this when I saw the documentary The Sunnyland Murders or Bad Day in Sunyland. Gordon McNeil was mesmerizing as as he narrates and lays bare his emotions. Can't say that about the Brass at the top today. These guys were truly hero's from another time and era.
The guys were known to be armed as shown. This incident has been dissected, reviewed, replayed many times. Massad Ayoob did a very extensive write up in American Handgunner that might very well be the source of information used in this screenplay. Very exacting.
The film showed shooting at close quarters where the villains' car was trapped.... a head shot could have prevented a lot of discussions later on the choice of ammo. It's the marksmanship training that needs to be upgraded... A marksman with a .22 LR pistol might have finished the job earlier.... Powerful pistol calibers with poor shooters will still yield similar results.

randy 109 . I use .38 SPL +P cartridges instead of .357 Magnums, because I can have better accuracy up to 20 meters.... that is, in shooting 8 in. diam. steel plates & swingers that don't fire back. If one is poor in marksmanship, I believe his shots will get worse when under duress. I had no experience in actual gunfights except as a young activist in the Philippines in early 70's when we fought with slingshots & explosive projectiles against school guards with 12-gauge shotguns. I was a crack shot with the slingshot, but when fired upon with buck shots, I couldn't hit my targets due to fear & adrenaline rush. Law enforcers are trained for their kind of work and are expected to handle the situation better than ordinary people like me.
I watched this when it first aired and picked up a 5.00 DVD of it at Wal Mart years ago. It's one of the better "made for tv" movies. I always thought that if the two ex Green Berets had actually gotten OUT of the vehicle, the FBI would have lost every agent that day. And probably some police backup as well. They got lucky that these two were pinned in and mortally wounded right from the start.
The eight years I spent in Miami, as a DEA Agent, we did multiple traffic stops or takedowns. I always tried to use Marked units (Metro Dade or Miami Police) just for the extra firepower but more for there radio to get backup quicker. Also with the marked unit, the bad guys knew we were cops and not someone doing a rip ( since our bad guys had money or drugs). It was also easier to defend afterwards in court that a marked unit pulled them over and they knew that they were resisting. I still had Agents and Supervisors who resisted the use of marked units, almost all of them got promoted.

The thing to take away from this in my view isn't just the weapons used by both sides of this infamous shoot out but the extreme close range that it took place in, how fast things escalated, and how many people were effected by this incident. This went on to form a number of changes not only in the FBI Agency but in the shooting community as a whole that are still being felt to this day.
This shootout changed the way the FBI looked at their ammo and the firearms that they used. Out went the revolver w/ its limited bullet capacity. 10mm rd came into use later to be changed to the development of the 40s&w rd. Plus other policies
While a lot was made of guns and bullets, the other problem here was tactics. You had white collar crime investigators trying to take down heavily armed killers. They simply weren't trained or prepared for that.
Mireles kept fighting! He knew HOW to rack a shotgun one-armed and kept fighting even when grievously wounded. Many agents retired from serious wounds. FBI had better guns in the 1930s-40s: .357 revolvers!,

There were a bunch of made-for-TV movies, called "In the Line of Duty........._", and they were all great, but this one was the first and best of all. Absolutely fantastic!
The shotgun used by Matix was loaded with #6 Birdshot... The 9mm round used by the agents were NON +P 115gr. Winchester Silvertips.At the time was the cats meow of bullets. The agents revolvers were loaded with .38spl.+ P 158gr. LSWCHP- Lead Semi Wad Cutter Hollow Point..The FBI load. After the shooting the FBI went to 10mm but had issues then .40S&W now they are back to 9mm using the 147gr. Winchester PDX1 ammunition for its penetration capabilities(After the shooting FBI they went to heavy projectiles) in their Glock 19's and Glock 26's. I have read when they went back to 9mm they had the 124gr+P Speer Gold Dot(my carry round in my Glock43)but then went to Hornady Critical Duty 135gr.Non +P Flex Lock... Lastly neither suspect had drugs or alcohol in their system. PS: Loved the sound of the four barrel carburetors opening up.✔
Platt and Mattix had no intention of going down quietly. To people who knew them, they were described as quiet family men. Platt actually had a wife and 3 children while Mattix was a single dad. Both men were also suspected of killing their previous wives
Platt and Mattix are Suspects 1 and 2 in the murder of two people at a Columbus, Ohio hospital. One of the murder victims was the wife of the guy who is now berried in Dayton, Ohio, I think. She was a hospital employee. The other murder victim, wrong place wrong time.
Just read a two part article in Shotgun News about this & how this incident changed not just fbi but law enforcement nationally. Of all the movies depicting this event, the agents involved said this one was the closest to what actually happened. It also opened a debate about many topics such as a standardized ammunition, duty weapons, and tactics. Would love to see the whole movie.

David Soul's Weapon was probably a Ruger AC556 which is an NFA Select fire version of the Mini 14. Before 1986 you could buy several versions of that weapon with just a 200 dollar tax stamp if you had no felony record. Transferable Automatic Weapons were reasonably priced before the 86 ban came about which limited them to Class 2 /3 FFL Dealers, LE and the Military. These firearms that you could purchase back in the early 80's between 800 and a 1000 dollars now go for 10 times that on certain models... Just type in Ruger AC556 in your Browser and learn more about this Firearm. I'm sure owners/dealers have uploaded lots of photos of them also...

The biggest mistake was that they never notified local PD that there was an operation taking place. That loss of precious time in getting ambulances there to aid the agents was a major mistake.

I continue to train police and security agents to honor the memory of NYPD’s Scott Gadell, slain while reloading a low-capacity weapon in 1986. And why a back-up weapon is a must. Gadell was just 22 and only 11 months into his career with the NYPD when he was killed on June 28, 1986. He and his partner from the 101st Precinct in Far Rockaway chased Robert Roulston, who had just shot at two men, into an alleyway. The gunman and Gadell exchanged shots - nine by the suspect, who was armed with a 9-mm. gun, and six by Gadell - the maximum the cop's revolver could hold. While the rookie cop was reloading his weapon, Roulston kept firing, hitting Gadell in the forehead. The incident led to an outcry for 9-mm. handguns, which hold 15 bullets their magazine. In 1994, the 9-mm. was made the standard weapon for the NYPD. Scott's murder prompted the NYPD to use speed loaders revolvers and eventually move into semi-automatic pistols. This is why I tell young police officers, peace officers and security officers the importance of a second firearm. The need to train and keep your gear in working order. To carry addition ammo and have a crisis kit in your patrol car. Criminals are getting better armed so should the Law enforcement / Security professional. Train hard and win the fight. Thanks for great advice. I carry a Glock G-36, which carries 6 .45 ACP rounds. I also carry two spare magazines on me. My best defense is staying out of trouble in the first place and doing my best to be underestimated.

This proved revolvers are gay,and just plain out outdated,even a fucking ancient 1911 ww1 model would be a better option,at least you can change the magazine instead of fumbling around with putting 6 bullets in 6 different places,just put one magazine in one magwell
+luise cobian Speed loaders were around then but not sure that the FBI allowed them for use by their agents. Sometimes red tape can be deadly for those if affects. I have seen trained individuals reload their revolvers very quickly with the speed loaders. Another issue plain as day is that those agents also got hit in the hand and that would hinder even a magazine change if you can't wrap your fingers around it to pull it out or insert it into the gun. All well and done when fully able, not so much when injured and scared/nervous.

A pistol is a weapon to be used to fight your way to a Rifle. That big .44 magnum that everyone drools over has a LOT less power than any high powered rifle. The Ruger Mini-14 is one of the best combat rifles NEVER used by any military. Had the M14 been put into service in the .223 caliber the M16 would have been "stillborn". Our soft body armor hardly slows down a .223 round and offers no protection against the Mini-14. .45 or 9mm? Modern ammo makes the comparison moot. It's a personal choice and thinking a different handgun would have made the difference in '86 FBI shootout is academic...

***** Lol! You're right! But in Vietnam I think it was the M-16 gun itself that failed than the 5.56 caliber. The .308/7.62x51 is a powerful round and can be hard to fire in full-auto mode, although the FN-FAL itself is a great rifle, just like the AK-47.

With an extra muzzle flash suppressor, it makes it rock stable despite no stock/foregrip/long barrel and sling it around your shoulder. Shot a friend's 5.56 at the range, feels like a BB (+P) gun next to the AK. Besides, the AK is so much simpler to field strip and clean and my Serbian M92, it looks dang deadly, the women just love to watch you blast away you're 7.62 and don't care to give the AR-15 a second look. I'm sure the AR-15 is a decent gun too but it simply ain't my personal choice and the local PD folks also concur with me on that one.
These agents should've been contacting local law enforcement/swat team ASAP simply because of these robbers' military training. Very sad incident but could've been much worse.

Yeah, this wasn’t automatic, he was just pulling the trigger a lot. You can hear it in how inconsistent the fire rate is. All automatic would’ve done in this scenario is probably burn through ammo faster, and the fight would’ve ended quicker

Platt and Matix both took a total of 18 hits. One took 12 the other 6. They were not wearing vests or on drugs and still killed 2 agents and wounded several others. When it was over one of the agents said we knew they were dying but they were not dying fast enough. It was extraordinary and extremely violent and frightening as hell.

There are some critics that could argue that the cop in this scene was a "coward" for running away from the gunfight. However, the only option he had was fleeing to save his life, since he was nearly at gunpoint by the criminals.

He was the one agent named Richard Manauzi who lost his service revolver during the car chase; he was unarmed at the time, because I think his gun had been knocked out of his car, as he had placed it on the front passenger seat, and as a result, when he collided with the suspect's car, his gun went flying out of the car. He was unarmed; luckily, all of the other agents were armed at least.

The FBI analyzed this incident, changed their training, and passed it on to all other LEO departments.
Their reenactment scared the Hell out of me as a young officer 30+ years ago, and really made me take training seriously.
I have a LEO cousin who showed me what was probably the same "dry fire reenactment" you were shown.
I know most people say "thank you for your service" to military, but i think very highly of law enforcement as well(unless they're crooked). So thanks to you officers out there for what you do. Its very underappreciated especially today.
I was working out of the NE Station in Houston Texas when this went down...I still cringe when I see this and the North Hollywood bank shoot-out in 1997.
Another scary one from my academy class in 1980 was the California Highway Patrol shootout in Newhall. They lost 4 and were 15 seconds away from losing 2 more.
I remember reading the report of this incident while I was an officer with a large town department. Scared the hell out of me and made me sure to be extra careful when dealing with all traffic stops and calls. I carry a sadness with me to this day that this could have been anyone anywhere. God Bless those brave agents.

I am a life long shooter, and back then, I used to go shooting a lot. I just happened to be working about 200 yards from this gunfight, on that street, 82nd. Ave and S.W. 120 St., I saw the whole thing that day, it lasted about 7 minutes, that's a really long time. They filmed this at another location, probably didn't want to go back there. For about a half hour after the shooting stopped, I stood there with a friend of mine and watched about 150 cop cars show up, mostly unmarked, a steady stream of them, I didn't know we had that many cops in this town, they must have come from far away to get as many as I saw that day. They closed down US-1 to land the big rescue chopper, to haul off the wounded, it was really something to see. We couldn't believe it at the time. Later I got more details about what happened, but I saw what happened, I just didn't understand it all at the time. I was at the other end of the road from that crowd of people, only 2 or 3 of us were standing there but like I said, soon, the cops from all over the county showed, too late to help. The bottom line is the bad guy had a rifle, way more accurate and devastating and the cops just had 4 inch barrels and pistol rounds, that's not a fair fight at any distance but at 20 yards, it's horrific because the rifle can't miss and the pistol can't hit (easily). That shotgun was not a (big) factor and all the demolition derby didn't happen, just one crash and done. That was the day after my 29th birthday, I remember it well, like it was just last month. A bad day.

I met Agent Mireles at the FBI Academy in 1999, before he retired. He had pretty good function of his arm at the time, which had been shattered in the shootout. A true warrior. In the same meeting, I was able to hold Agent Dove's 9 mm, which had been rendered inoperable before he had been murdered during the shootout.

This incident not only lead to police departments to upgrade their firearms from revolvers to semi automatic weapons and the fbi working with local, county, state law enforcement agencies whenever they came into their jurisdictions because back then the fbi didn’t let them know they was coming into town.

Louis. If Platte had an M 16, that's probably what would have happened. It happened to me 3 times in Vietnam, and I went to an M 14 and never looked back. Notice Platte had a mini 14 instead of M 16. He'd probably had the same trouble I had. If he'd had one of the new M 1 A shorties (308) the FBI wouldn't have had a chance. Don't piss off an old Ranger.
The newer M16s with chrome lined barrels and chambers are a lot better than the ones used in most of the Vietnam war(At the very end of the war the M16A1 which was chrome lined came) remember that.

I remember watching this tv movie when I was a kid. For it's time, it was a very brutal display of an iconic shootout that every FBI agent studies. Love the choice of actors as bad guys!! I was actually 21 when this came out.

Hi Bo a little more info, the best shooter there with the FBI lost his glasses in the banging of cars prior to the shoot out and had very poor vision without them. I am sure the FBI would have done better with him in the fight..

What’s really sickening to me is the determination to kill persists even when they’re struggling to simply stand upright because they’re so full of holes. That was the lethal shot at 6:30 that eventually killed Platt, collapsing and filling his lung with blood; that he was still able to slowly walk up to the agents and put one bullet in the chest of one and two through the head of another afterwards as he was dying in agony is truly horrific and a testament to the hatred he held towards cops.

Most likely there he started to fight in a violent and erratic way since he knew that the shooting was only going to come out in a bag, so he decided to take as many agents as he could to hell.

No other serious hit occured until thre 3 execution shots were fired into his head from 3 ft away, after he was unarmed, bled out, helpless. Platt and Matix were the kind of guys who'd laugh if you put a shotgun barrel against their foreheads and told them to cuff up. In those days, the FBI (and police forces in general) were poorly prepared to deal with guys like that. Most bank robbers then, and now, don't actually WANT or PLAN to die; the mission is the money and the guns are the tool.
Unfortunately for the Feds, they'd run into a rare thing: a Folie à Deux combination pair of psychopaths on a killing spree. Unknown to the agents, Platt and Matix had already cold-bloodedly murdered each others wives and several random poor schmucks who'd crossed them. They were merely using bank robbery as part of their final "ride to death" spree of violence and antisocial hatred, expecting they'd up in a climactic gunfight to the death at some point and take a few cops with them to Hell.
It's uncommon for psychopaths to team up like that, but they leave 2x as much wreckage when they do. Another example a few years later was Phillips and Mataseranu at the North Hollywood Shootout.

No, marksmanship is naturally bad in real firefights. The real problem was failure to update their technology. Revolvers had been obsolete for law enforcement purposes for a long time, even before the shootout.

The only major inaccuracies that I noticed was that one of the suspects has a automatic Mini-14 as where he had a semi-automatic Mini-14 in the actual shooting.

The 1986 FBI Miami Shootout was a gun battle that occured on April 11, 1986 in an unincorporated region of Dade County in South Florida (renamed Miami-Dade in 1997) between eight FBI agents and two serial bank robbers. During the firefight, FBI Special Agents Jerry L. Dove and Benjamin P. Grogan were killed, while five other agents were wounded. The two robbery suspects, William Russell Matix and Michael Lee Platt, were also killed.
The incident is infamous in FBI history and is well-studied in law enforcenment circles. Despite of outnumbering the suspects 4 to 1, the agents found themselves pinned down by suppressive rifle fire and unable to respond effectively. In 1988, NBC television produced a made-for-TV movie, “In the Line of Duty: The FBI Murders” depicting the circumstances leading up to and including the shootout, one of the several films of In the Line of Duty series produced during the 1980s and 1990s. Michael Gross (Family Ties) portrayed William Matix and David Soul (Starsky and Hutch) portrayed Michael Platt. Massad Ayoob wrote what I believe to be the best, detailed report on the FBI Miami Shootout. This movie got it amazingly accurate but I recommend for any and all shooters, LEO or Armed Security Officers to read the "Ayoob Files" and "In the Gravest Extreme" also by Massad Ayoob. Gravest Extreme had just came out when I went to the Academy 35 years ago and was required reading. Little has changed but Read the Ayoob Files for the best narrative on this shootout and the Newhall Incident (CHP lost 4 officers). My mother worked for the CHP when Newhall occurred in 1970 and I went to the Academy in Central California ten years later. This Movie actually got it quite right and is worth a watch. Remember that Ammo has changed a LOT since 1986 and modern 9mm is a lot more effective, still a .223 has awesome stopping power when compared to ANY pistol including .45 acp or even .44 magnum. Rifles and shotguns just plain beat pistols, hands down...
Its seems so silly, but in todays world we know so much better. I am not an officer but it seems the common sense thing to do once a rifle was seen being loaded would be to keep distant and coordinate with the far off backup hopefully to tail and intercept the suspects at their target bank or destination or a highway had a chase ensued.
Disregarded the "heading towards busy roadways." As the suspect had already been on busy roadway where they were priorly prepared to engage.
The thinking is that even a hunting rifle or lever action would pose a serious threat to pistol packing agents behind sheet metal car doors. And that its best to wait for more units/ specialized units.
+sudilos117 You are absolutely right. Take solid cover and fire enough rounds to keep the subjects "pinned down". You could have 3-4 cops there in a couple of minutes and two dozen cops there in a half hour. "Bravery" rather than discretion has got a lot of good men killed.
randy109-Mattix only got one round off on the shotgun during the whole firefight from what I located online today. Most reenactments including this movie have that wrong but the rest of the firefight details presented here are fairly accurate from what I read.

the 223, using ball ammo, is NOT a batter manstopper than 180 gr jhp 44 mags in a 6" barrel. They are both massively effective. 240 gr .44's often fail to expand, especially from 4" barrels. The nneeded velocity just isn't present
I remember having In Service Training with my Department not long after this happened.
Like many LEO agencies, we got the initial reports of the gunfight parameters and weaponry as well as tactics employed.
What I found remarkable was that while I had always carried at LEAST two handguns and significant ammo in magazines (I carried a Colt M1911A1 as my primary and a Colt Officers Model as my backup/ankle gun, both in .45ACP) and I wore my issued bullet proof vest WHENEVER I was on uniformed duty as well as when I worked U.C. or Plain Clothes assisting other agencies, but many (!) of my fellow deputies hated to wear their vests and it was far and few between when another Deputy would admit to carrying at least one backup handgun.
(And all that doesn't cover the high powered rifle I carried in my marked unit along with a 12-gauge pump action shotgun.
But after the in-service training and discussions about the Miami incident, our Training Division had to post many additional range sessions for the guys who felt that they wanted to furthermore carry a backup pistol or revolver on duty. We were required to qualify with whatever guns we carried either on-duty or off duty, so there were a LOT of eyes opened and better armed Deputies after that.
As an aside, all the "Old Head" Deputies as well as some of the younger guys, who would chide me for having at least two semiautomatic pistols on my person as well as SIX (6) spare mags (for a total of just about 60 rounds of .45ACP ammo) would look at me with a different perspective.
It wasn't that I was actively LOOKING to get into a gunfight but being stationed on an area known for considerable drug smuggling and bad guys who would rather shoot it out than be arrested and go to prison, meant that a backup Deputy could be half an hour away, so I didn't want to die for lack of not having enough ammo or guns, as some would say.
It bears mentioning that in addition to all the loaded magazines and handguns I carried, I always had an additional 100 rounds of ammo in a bag I could grab and go if I had to un-ass an area for some reason. But IF I knew I might be walking into a situation where trouble was possible, I would grab my Riot Shotgun and a couple spare boxes of buckshot (25 rounds per box) as well as at least 5 extra boxes of slugs (5 rounds per box for a total of 25 rounds), all of which I'd transfer to a modest backpack that also included binoculars, camo wrap and about 1 gallon of drinking water along with some high-energy snacks should I need to spend the night in a hidy hole waiting to catch some bad guys.
It goes without saying that as a Medic (another side duty) I carried a small Trauma kit for gunshots as well as a Boo Boo kit for little ouchies.
Back to the Miami shoot out, it turns out the ammo the FBI Agents were carrying was a style thought (?) to have good properties for taking out criminals but in reality they weren't particularly effective. Having said that we all ultimately learned that the criminals in the Miami Shootout were essentially Walking Dead but so pumped up on adrenaline that they were able to continue to move and shoot, albeit at a greatly reduced ability, luckily for Agent Mireles (the man with the shotgun behind the trunk of one car).
And while I am no longer involved in Law Enforcement, I am thankful that the ammunition companies have created greatly (!) more effective antipersonnel ammo that is far more effective than ammo of years ago.
Our Men and Women wearing the Badge deserve the very BEST equipment and ammunition to do their job and if need be to put down a criminal with as few rounds being fired and minimal collateral damage potential if tons of bullets are flying.
EVERY single round must be OWNED by someone so the fewer it takes to get the job done, the better.

oh shit except the most recent UPS shootout in miami where in contrast to the agents of Miami dade picked an incredibly poor spot to start a shootout resulting in a civilian being shot. 200+ rounds on a busy fucking highway. They "are great at setting up perimeters" my fucking ass they put countless lives in danger.

I thought the FBI learned way back in the mid 1930s never to be outgunned again. Even in the old movie "G Men", the FBI was armed with sub machine guns. In this incident, there was only one guy armed with anything more powerful than a handgun; the guy with the shotgun. That guy's left arm was rendered useless early on, which forced him to use his shotgun with one arm. One of the bad guys was armed with a semi auto rifle and a huge magazine. All by himself, he outgunned a bunch of FBI armed with pistols and revolvers.
I think fire discipline was a bigger issue. All the FBI agents shot up their first load of ammo in 16 seconds. Then they all reloaded and shot up all of their back-up ammo in 14 seconds. No fire discipline, no cover fire, no consolidation of position, no movement to hard cover, no holding the criminals at bay until back-up arrived, ... nothing. By the way, two agents en route only a mile and a half away had full auto MP5s.
Late, but for the record: The agents armed with machine guns did not participate in this event because they where poorly placed and did not arrive in time. Many of the casualties and poor marksmanship displayed here where due to poor planning.

@@garypulliam3740 they completely missed the robbers with over 70 shots at 6m and less. except for one head hit on Matix and the arm/lung hit on Platt and the 3 each execution shots as they sat unarmed, bled-out and helpless, all the hits on the robbers were peripheral or only 1" deep Not one of the 7 plus p lhps fired at their skulls pierced their craniums. One each was deflected down into their necks and bled them out. 6 of those were from a 4" barrel and 6 ft away, but had to pierce a windshield first, One, from 5m, from a 2" barrel, hit nothing but Matix's skull. the .38 is a VERY weak cartridge. Liberty Arms 50 gr, 2000 fps solid copper 9mm hp puts all .38 loads to shame. This is because the SAAMI chamber spec pressures in the US are so VERY low for .38. They are 50% higher for 9mm
I was a friend of an Instructor at the FBI (at Quantico, Virginia), was one of the instructors that trained the new agents about the Miami Shootout. He provided me with an FBI film for a seminar that I was doing for our club on the subject of the Miami shootout.

I remember watching this on tv in 88, thinking how graphic it was. Never saw it since then until today but I always remembered the line 'Where did THAT come from?'.
That's about when I watched it with my father who was a retired chief of police and I spent a few years working as an officer for him. Lost him to lung cancer in 94. Like you that was the last time I ever saw it. That line stuck with me too, "where did that come from?"

Ed Mireles (the guy in the red jacket who uses his shotgun against the robbers) recently published a book detailing the true story of this event. One of the biggest inaccuracies in this movie is how toned down the violence was. When Mireles got shot and hit the ground, the .223 round almost severed his arm from his body. It was literally hanging on by just a thin sliver of muscle and flesh and looked like ground beef. The second shot that struck him in the head stripped the skin to the bone, went from the upper left part of his head and exited above the left ear, and severed an artery. It was pure chance that as Mireles was trying to get his bearings, he realized he saw blood spurting out of the left side of his vision and started feeling around his head for the wound. When he touched the injury, he accidentally moved a flap of skin into place to cover the severed artery and slowed down the bleeding to a survivable rate.

30 years ago, a firefight in Miami became a watershed marker in law enforcement history. It also provide proof that a spirited soldier can overcome adversities and accomplish their mission, despite being mortally wounded.
April 11th 1986, two former Army Military Police- now bank robbers- were being stalked by a team of FBI investigators who specialized in Complex Robberies.
After months of eluding the local authorities and the FBI, the bank robbers were finally on the radar.
The following video is from a "hard to find" tv movie. The teleplay provided a near identical representation of what conspired of that takedown.
In the end, two FBI agents were killed, 5 others were seriously wounded and the bank robbers eventually died of their wounds. Yet, it was the will of one robber that turned this text book felony ambush to a most studied and painful lessons in FBI AND Law enforcement history.
they didn't achieve their mission…what most likely caused their ability to fight was controlled adrenaline highs. their training causing less than average anxious heart rates, and less than average blood loss. it's easier to argue the army is to blame at that point for why they hadn't gone down sooner. also, weren't they rangers, not military police?

I was six or seven when my dad, as an instructor at the Ontario Police College, allowed us to watch this. It was an instructional/documentary version that broke down the process of the shoot-out, with commentary. I believe he was watching it in order to assess it and use it for one of his classes.
Several of the hard lessons learned from this event included the issue of inter-department communication--the local law enforcement was not overly aware of the FBI operation, and thus were unable to respond or assist (and arrived at the situation not knowing what was going on); the need to maintain situation awareness (the two agents who were killed were pre-occupied with a jammed weapon, while failing to observe Platt approach them); resource and fire discipline; as well as the obvious need for balanced and proper firepower, and body protection
It should be noted that there were 5 other FBI cars heading to scene, two which had HK MP5s, an M16, and shotguns. Had one or two of these additional vehicles been involved, or substituted for one or two of the on-scene vehicles, the outcome of the shootout could have been much different. Some of the agents involved in the shooting had ballistic armour in their trunks--only two were wearing any during the shootout, and both were relatively light--however, given that three of the early injuries received by officers were to unprotected areas of the body (arm, hand, neck), the best speculation with the BA is that it would have changed the movement and set up of the agents, which can fully change, for better or worse, the dynamics of the battle.

moreover, the agents on the arrest team walked right by lockers with long weapons in them but did not take them.

Another lesson that came out of that was a behavioral conditioning situation that actually occurs during live fire training on the range. At the time the FBI as well as many LEO’s carried revolvers. During live fire training they would empty their weapons by ejecting the empty brass in their other hand. The after action report stated that one of the agents killed behind his car was reloading when one of the SUBJECTS walked up to him and shot him. The report went on to say the dead agent was found with a hand full of the empty brass he had fired.
I remember this because at the time I was an agent carrying the .38 we were all being retrained to let them just drop while going for our speed loader. Those poor guys may have out numbered the bad guys but the agents were out gunned. It took longer than I cared but because of that shootout we went to the 1911 .45 ACP and carried it cocked n locked made my day because I never had much faith in the .38 FMJ regulation carry.
That was a terrible tragedy but overall a lot of badly needed changes and training came out of it. No telling how many lives were saved.

Read the wikipedia entry for a more detailed step-by-step of this shootout, it's quite interesting. Every little thing mattered. In the end Mireles basically walked up to the car and emptied his .357 into it, hitting Matix (The Dad from Family Ties, LOL!) in the face 3 times (brutal ... hit in the face 3 times with a .357!!) and Platt once in the chest. They said Platt was a dead man walking after the first or second bullet wound but kept on going to kill those two agents. It's a good but morbid read.
the '.357 Magnum' was loaded with FBI's standard .38 Special +P 158 gr SWC-HP...; yes, it will do the job with a few headshots! :)

The script threw in some b.s. about keeping them away from the public. This was simply botched. At best it was a cowboy or two that talked tough and wanted to back it up (showing off) thinking there was a chance the suspects would just throw their hands up as most probably do. What impressed me was the good acting by Soul and Gross.

I was sitting by the Pool at Watertown Apartments chatting with another resident when we heard all of those shots.We heard lots of sirens afterwards as well but I did not know what had happened until later on the local news.I was happy I was not closer or in the line of Fire.It was a hard lesson for Law Enforcement but in the long run I’m guessing it has saved many more lives since then.
My neighbor lived on this street when this happened. He moved his family to Naples, Fl. within the same month...

Jerry Dove passes The FBI litmus test when McNeil ask him " your not afraid of guns are you?." Dove replies " yes sir I am ", McNeil replies gooooood. An anti gun movie to be sure. They even had the mini-14 converted to full automatic when it never was. Outside of that the ending shootout was fairly accurate. I had a lot of empathy and respect for these guy that went through this when I saw the documentary The Sunnyland Murders or Bad Day in Sunyland. Gordon McNeil was mesmerizing as as he narrates and lays bare his emotions. Can't say that about the Brass at the top today. These guys were truly hero's from another time and era.

The guys were known to be armed as shown. This incident has been dissected, reviewed, replayed many times. Massad Ayoob did a very extensive write up in American Handgunner that might very well be the source of information used in this screenplay. Very exacting.

The film showed shooting at close quarters where the villains' car was trapped.... a head shot could have prevented a lot of discussions later on the choice of ammo. It's the marksmanship training that needs to be upgraded... A marksman with a .22 LR pistol might have finished the job earlier.... Powerful pistol calibers with poor shooters will still yield similar results.

randy 109 . I use .38 SPL +P cartridges instead of .357 Magnums, because I can have better accuracy up to 20 meters.... that is, in shooting 8 in. diam. steel plates & swingers that don't fire back. If one is poor in marksmanship, I believe his shots will get worse when under duress. I had no experience in actual gunfights except as a young activist in the Philippines in early 70's when we fought with slingshots & explosive projectiles against school guards with 12-gauge shotguns. I was a crack shot with the slingshot, but when fired upon with buck shots, I couldn't hit my targets due to fear & adrenaline rush. Law enforcers are trained for their kind of work and are expected to handle the situation better than ordinary people like me.
I watched this when it first aired and picked up a 5.00 DVD of it at Wal Mart years ago. It's one of the better "made for tv" movies.
I always thought that if the two ex Green Berets had actually gotten OUT of the vehicle, the FBI would have lost every agent that day. And probably some police backup as well. They got lucky that these two were pinned in and mortally wounded right from the start.
The eight years I spent in Miami, as a DEA Agent, we did multiple traffic stops or takedowns. I always tried to use Marked units (Metro Dade or Miami Police) just for the extra firepower but more for there radio to get backup quicker. Also with the marked unit, the bad guys knew we were cops and not someone doing a rip ( since our bad guys had money or drugs). It was also easier to defend afterwards in court that a marked unit pulled them over and they knew that they were resisting. I still had Agents and Supervisors who resisted the use of marked units, almost all of them got promoted.

+studinthemaking Actually that was a Ruger AC 556 a short barreled full -auto capable version of the Mini-14. The thing to take away from this in my view isn't just the weapons used by both sides of this infamous shoot out but the extreme close range that it took place in, how fast things escalated, and how many people were effected by this incident. This went on to form a number of changes not only in the FBI Agency but in the shooting community as a whole that are still being felt to this day.

This shootout changed the way the FBI looked at their ammo and the firearms that they used. Out went the revolver w/ its limited bullet capacity. 10mm rd came into use later to be changed to the development of the 40s&w rd. Plus other policies
While a lot was made of guns and bullets, the other problem here was tactics. You had white collar crime investigators trying to take down heavily armed killers. They simply weren't trained or prepared for that.
Agent Mireles was the definition of kickass.
Mireles kept fighting! He knew HOW to rack a shotgun one-armed and kept fighting even when grievously wounded. Many agents retired from serious wounds. FBI had better guns in the 1930s-40s: .357 revolvers!,

Just read a two part article in Shotgun News about this & how this incident changed not just fbi but law enforcement nationally. Of all the movies depicting this event, the agents involved said this one was the closest to what actually happened. It also opened a debate about many topics such as a standardized ammunition, duty weapons, and tactics. Would love to see the whole movie.

I cant comment extensively on the changes in the fbi since this incident but I was a cop in a very large PD (multiple thousands of officers) and I do know what happened in most large depts.

David Soul's Weapon was probably a Ruger AC556 which is an NFA Select fire version of the Mini 14. Before 1986 you could buy several versions of that weapon with just a 200 dollar tax stamp if you had no felony record. Transferable Automatic Weapons were reasonably priced before the 86 ban came about which limited them to Class 2 /3 FFL Dealers, LE and the Military. These firearms that you could purchase back in the early 80's between 800 and a 1000 dollars now go for 10 times that on certain models... Just type in Ruger AC556 in your Browser and learn more about this Firearm. I'm sure owners/dealers have uploaded lots of photos of them also...

I continue to train police and security agents to honor the memory of NYPD’s Scott Gadell, slain while reloading a low-capacity weapon in 1986. And why a back-up weapon is a must.
Gadell was just 22 and only 11 months into his career with the NYPD when he was killed on June 28, 1986.
He and his partner from the 101st Precinct in Far Rockaway chased
Robert Roulston, who had just shot at two men, into an alleyway. The
gunman and Gadell exchanged shots - nine by the suspect, who was armed
with a 9-mm. gun, and six by Gadell - the maximum the cop's revolver
could hold.
While the rookie cop was reloading his weapon, Roulston kept firing, hitting Gadell in the forehead. The incident led to an outcry for 9-mm. handguns, which hold 15 bullets
their magazine. In 1994, the 9-mm. was made the standard weapon for the
NYPD. Scott's murder prompted the NYPD to use speed loaders revolvers and eventually move into semi-automatic pistols.
This is why I tell young police officers, peace officers and security officers the importance of a second firearm. The need to train and keep your gear in working order. To carry addition ammo and have a crisis kit in your patrol car. Criminals are getting better armed so should the Law enforcement / Security professional.

Thanks for great advice. I carry a Glock G-36, which carries 6 .45 ACP rounds. I also carry two spare magazines on me. My best defense is staying out of trouble in the first place and doing my best to be underestimated.

+luise cobian Speed loaders were around then but not sure that the FBI allowed them for use by their agents. Sometimes red tape can be deadly for those if affects. I have seen trained individuals reload their revolvers very quickly with the speed loaders. Another issue plain as day is that those agents also got hit in the hand and that would hinder even a magazine change if you can't wrap your fingers around it to pull it out or insert it into the gun. All well and done when fully able, not so much when injured and scared/nervous.

A pistol is a weapon to be used to fight your way to a Rifle. That big .44 magnum that everyone drools over has a LOT less power than any high powered rifle. The Ruger Mini-14 is one of the best combat rifles NEVER used by any military. Had the M14 been put into service in the .223 caliber the M16 would have been "stillborn". Our soft body armor hardly slows down a .223 round and offers no protection against the Mini-14. .45 or 9mm? Modern ammo makes the comparison moot. It's a personal choice and thinking a different handgun would have made the difference in '86 FBI shootout is academic...

Agree with you about 7.62 (both AK and the x 51-.308) being too much overkill especially in an urban close combat type situation. The 5.56 is just adequate.

Lol! You're right! But in Vietnam I think it was the M-16 gun itself that failed than the 5.56 caliber. The .308/7.62x51 is a powerful round and can be hard to fire in full-auto mode, although the FN-FAL itself is a great rifle, just like the AK-47.

CA must be one sad state, lol! You may wanna consider moving here to Mississippi, gun laws are pretty relaxed. You can even get a concealed carry permit in a couple of weeks. Any upper limit for handgun calibers in CA? I just bought a Desert Eagle 50AE, awesome pistol. A few months ago, bought a Serbian M92PAP AK-47, which actually qualifies as a handgun here. With an extra muzzle flash suppressor, it makes it rock stable despite no stock/foregrip/long barrel and sling it around your shoulder. Shot a friend's 5.56 at the range, feels like a BB (+P) gun next to the AK. Besides, the AK is so much simpler to field strip and clean and my Serbian M92, it looks dang deadly, the women just love to watch you blast away you're 7.62 and don't care to give the AR-15 a second look. I'm sure the AR-15 is a decent gun too but it simply ain't my personal choice and the local PD folks also concur with me on that one.

For a TV movie, where you don't have much money or time, this is well done. The director deserves credit. I had never thought much of David Soul as an actor, but he was good in this.

Yeah, this wasn’t automatic, he was just pulling the trigger a lot. You can hear it in how inconsistent the fire rate is. All automatic would’ve done in this scenario is probably burn through ammo faster, and the fight would’ve ended quicker
