Recently played this song for a 43 year old Deadhead whom I work with. He spent 88-95 on tour with the Dead. He never really much cared for Ween...until this. One more convert for the greatest American band of my generation.
Any idiot can write a love song about a woman but what I fucking love about Ween is they aren't afraid of acknowledging their love for other men. Eulogy for David Anderson, So Long Jerry and A Tear For Eddie all bring me to tears.
Dude you said it. I was sitting here having a great day and had a urge to listen to this track. Now I'm holding back tears. Thank God Gener got sober, too many lost already.
My friend Nic loved this song. He showed it to me, just l like he showed me jerry, and the dead, and so many other things he introduced me to. And then he passed away. So long Jerry. So long Nic.
My brother and I performed this at the spreading of my grandfathers ashes whose name was Gerry. Was very cathartic. I was named after the man and all my close friends call me Gerry. I have requested this song for my passing as well. Love this song and this band to me it's more than music
My 12 year old son and me just saw the good ole boys in Burlington 2 months ago , he plays guitar , I'm so happy he introduced me to Gene N Dean , I'm lucky to have such a brown boy.
The two best "tribute" songs I've ever heard came from one band - and Ween is that band. So Long Jerry and Tear For Eddie are both miraculous in their respective musicality and so moving in their tribute to two different but equally talented and amazing artists. Paint the town brown, people.
When the phaser turns on in a tear for Eddie... I can play that shit and its soo awesome when you dive into the mind of deaners guitar writing and technique
I turned on to the GD when I was in college 1979-1984 which began a lifelong love for the music of Garcia and the GD... saw Garcia well over 100 times with the GD, his JGB and solo, but I was never a tour type. I first heard Ween in the early 1990s and quickly recognized the undeniable genius. This tribute makes me smile double.
I picked up my things and went outside A man that I loved up and died I couldn't believe that after all of this time I never knew the man but he was a good friend of mine So long, i'll see you down that long dark river Floating on that lining in the sky I'm lucky, lucky enough to have heard you play your song So long, Jerry, so long Always be together Rolling down the track Always and forever Never lookin' back I got my guitar and went to the river Saw alot of people just dancin' around I took off my shirt and jumped in the water You always flew so high, now you've finally left the ground So long, i'll see you down that long dark river Floating on that lining in the sky I'm lucky, lucky enough to have heard you sing your song So long, Jerry, so long So long, Jerry, so long
Me too, (clearly as my youtube pic here is representing the Dead!) - though I'm very familiar with this song as I listen to it every few weeks or so....it's beautiful! They made their tribute to the Dead, sound like a Dead song! How very Brown of them to do so!
A very, very dear friend of mine passed away today, and I haven’t been able to stop listening to this song. Every listen runs a montage in my brain of all my favorite memories with him. I will never be able to listen to this song again without thinking of him. Ween has been a staple in my life since I first discovered them nearly 20 years ago, and every song holds some kind of sentiment to it as the years have flown by. But this one has become the most important. From one anonymous person to another, be sure to tell the people you love that you love them more often, because there comes a time when you won’t have a chance, and you don’t want to sit there wishing you said it more. So Long, Matt. I’ll miss you dearly.
I have never heard this song and I have been a ween fan for 15 years. (I think I have seen them 3 times). This, like a tear for Eddy, is an incredible tribute to another incredible artists. It sounds so much like classic dead music. Gene Ween and Dean Ween are incredible at mimicry of other styles.
Fair enough question issacbateman76 I'll do my best to answer. No band will ever be as famous as the Beatles. It's just not possible. The Beatles laid the groundwork for every musical act ever to come. One could make an argument that the Dead laid the groundwork for all future live bands. Phish could easily slip into that conversation, Ween too. But the Beatles started it all and I'm forever grateful that they inspired the Dead, the Stones, Phish, Ween, Counting Crows, Sublime etc...
I like Ween better than The Beatles and I still love Beatles a lot. That said, The Beatles are and will always be the biggest band in history not beacuse they were are the most diverse or musically talented band of all time, but beacuse they were the biggest game changers and managed to strike in a historical context that will not be repeated. Jesus they were good.
@@wangson Yea reminds me of the "gone he's gone" part right before "like a steam locomotive" in the chorus of He's Gone. It could just be a general Dead sound, and I'm overthinking it. But also I could see Ween intentionally putting that easter egg in there.
Damn... 1st listen... I was too young to see a dead show and am a huge fan. I'm hoping that I'll be able to catch ween when they come back around as once again... huge fan. Fair you well my brothers.
Listening to this one day after the 26 year anniversary of Jerry’s passing. Unfortunately I wasn’t alive to see him play, but the music him and his band mates played will live on forever. LLJ 🕊❤️
Love the full band version, also I agree with the dude right below this post! Rollins said it best "one day you will all kneel to the altar that is Ween"
I was an 80s and 90s Dead fan (too young to have experienced them any earlier). Ween has been in my musical universe for the last few years thanks to some great friends. I love that they wrote this ode to ol' Jer.
this is a good cry song. me and my gf are going on a break and i haven’t been able to cry. i don’t know why but it’s like so sad that i can’t, almost like how something is so cold it starts to feel like it’s burning. but damn, this is helping me release. aaron, mick, if you’re reading this, thank you. i love you guys
Beautiful song! Being a Dead Head, much respect for Jerry, the Dead and Ween for paying tribute to one of the "greatfulest". Peace and respect to all stoners and toker's.
Very often I'll listen to this directly after listening and watching Jerry and the Boys perform "So Many Roads" at soldier field 95. Yeah I be crying like s bitch!
It's nice to have my name in a Ween song title even if it's named after a famous person. I guess if I knew anyone and I was going somewhere they could play this for me.
The thing about Ween is they aren’t genre specific. They kill any genre they want. If they were a jamband they would have been one of the best jambands.
"never knew the man, but he was a good friend of mine..." doesn't that perfectly describe it for every single dead fan, wow
And it describes so many of us with Ween, too. Doesn't matter what's going on in life, Ween is always there & always comforting
I don't know if I love or hate that this didn't make it on the album. a bit of both I suppose
Beautiful, but i aint dad (yet)
@@clintpittman3525 so your still Alive and kicking, mostly kicking i supose?

Fuck yeah dude
Man...this one always brings the tears.
Glad Gener got his shit together so one of my other favorite artists didn’t have to write a song like this.
Shine on you, crazy diamond.
Dude you said it. I was sitting here having a great day and had a urge to listen to this track. Now I'm holding back tears. Thank God Gener got sober, too many lost already.
I fuckin felt this. Ain't that the truth.
Same here.
My friend Nic loved this song. He showed it to me, just l like he showed me jerry, and the dead, and so many other things he introduced me to. And then he passed away.
So long Jerry. So long Nic.
"Always so high but now you've finally left the ground" - Gener the tongue in cheek genius!
It's "always flew so high"
But your way would've been good too.
My brother and I performed this at the spreading of my grandfathers ashes whose name was Gerry. Was very cathartic. I was named after the man and all my close friends call me Gerry. I have requested this song for my passing as well. Love this song and this band to me it's more than music
Jason May very moving. I’m a Gerry with a G also. Lol
Jason May my son helped me do something on my phone once and now my name comes up Aaron instead of Gerry. ??

lmfao youre bad. i love it.@@zacharydobrowski
As a huge fan of Ween, and a fan of Grateful Dead for 30 years, I can't help but drop a tear or two.
Exactly the same with me friend!!!
That bass really lets me feel how empty i am
:'(
I love the sound of ween with a pedal steel...
My first Ween show was the country tour. Pumpin for the man with pedal steel is amazing.
Doing my part to single handedly push this to 100k
I'll do my best to assist you with that push :)
Made it high 5 ibreheim!
how does that success taste
that's not how singlehandedly works
Let's get it even further

Hell yes, sir.
not to mention the entire chocolate and cheese album was dedicated to john candy
Yes the two songs are very beautiful and a deserving tribute to Eddie and Jerry both of them loved to have fun! Getting down.

Such a beautiful tribute, they managed to capture some of Jerry’s essence in this one and you can hear it loud and clear.

Yeah that's kind of fucked
1992 when I got on the bus and turned Brown in 94.
Man, I love that Gener wrote a song about Jerry!
JTKenobi same JTKenobi
The pedal steel is a beautiful touch and homage
I've been a Deadhead for 40 years, but somehow never heard Ween before. This song is just gorgeous and makes me cry. Thanks for posting!
The genius of Gener is that he sings this IN Jerry's voice. Just like doing Thin Lizzy like Phil, Motorhead like Lemmy etc. Amazing!
I picked up my things and went outside
A man that I loved up and died

So long, Jerry, so long
Always be together
Rolling down the track
Always and forever
Never lookin' back
I got my guitar and went to the river
Saw alot of people just dancin' around
I took off my shirt and jumped in the water
You always flew so high, now you've finally left the ground
So long, i'll see you down that long dark river
Floating on that lining in the sky
I'm lucky, lucky enough to have heard you sing your song
So long, Jerry, so long
So long, Jerry, so long
The warbled tape noise @ 3:39 is the most subtle touch
RIP Jerry and Robert. The great rock band in the sky will have new tunes when we show up.
Such a tear-jerker 😔😪
Never knew the man, but he was a good friend of mine.
Just a brilliant line. Captured how I felt in 1995.
