Honestly, the ICC should give Jomboy the rights to show clips online. He has brought soo many international fans to baseball. If he could do a fraction of that to get Americans interested in cricket it would be amazing. Especially test cricket.

So glad you are bringing this sport to Americans who have never seen it. This is one of the many reason why Cricket is such a fascinating sport. The condition of the pitch, the length, the spin, and as you point out, the part of the ball that contacts the ground on the bounce...plus the 360 degree field, players catching scorching balls with their bare hands, at least half the team being bowlers and batsmen, the multitude of fielding positions...I gotta admit, I find this sport so much more interesting than baseball.
And that no two pitches play exactly the same way, it's the 23rd player.
those are the reasons why YOU and WE love the game, but all those things you mentioned has no impact or context for Americans and not why they'd pick up this sport. You just said a whole lot of words. It'd be like me saying why someone should love NFL and gave them bunch of footballisms and formations. And no T20 is also not how you sell this game. Every new thing is about stories and at the moment cricket lacks it. Besides Kohli who is there to sell? In FIFA at least there was that Messi vs Ronaldo story. There's none in cricket at the moment. Back in the day it could've been McGrath, Lee, Shoaib vs Sachin, Lara, Pointing. Cricket doesn't have stories to tell anymore. /Rant.

As an American who never knew what cricket was I absolutely love it now that I understand what's going on. I looked up like rules and how to play but no video really made it clear what's going on. The I found Jimmy on JM and in 2 videos he had me feeling like an expert on what's going on in the games. It seems really fun and really strategic all at once.
It is great! Long format games like this one here play over the course of 5 days so it really boils down to strategy, planning and variation and mostly about lulling the batsman into a false sense of security and then surprising them into making a mistake. The other short format games are just a showcase of pure force and skill in scoring as much as possible in a short amount of time.
Each has its nuance and is enjoyed in a different way.

T20 is shits and giggles cricket, ODI (50 over) is a bit more nuanced but with some rule changes in the last five years or so they are trying to make it more batter friendly. Test cricket is some real strategic shit. The bowlers can use 10 or more deliveries over the course of several overs to lay a trap for the batsman and then wham, bam, thank you ma'am; spring the trap and get the big wicket they were looking for. Then you have stuff like when a batsman is at 5 runs early in his innings and the fielder drops his ball. Said batsman goes on to score 100+ runs and wins the match for his side.
Some of the most exciting moments are when the batting team has no chance in hell of catching the run total so they are just trying to survive until it gets dark on the last day. The bowlers are throwing everything they got at them trying to take them out. You see batsmen getting fucking drilled with balls to the forearm, chest, shoulders, etc. It's even more fun when you have two bowlers as batsmen and it's in their hands to just foul off balls for a couple of hours. It's a lot harder than you think. One ill-advised swing by a poor batsman and the match is over. Prime example:

That doesn't make indian team less strong or weak... afterall there will be only one winning team who performed excellent on that day..it depends on many factors and constant injuries affect team's performance during big events.. whether indian team win or lose doesn't matter as long as they give their best, and btw Indian women under 19 team won an inaugural world cup this year and right now senior women team is playing T20 World Cup in South africa...we still support the blues no matter what.

For those unaware of the context of this series: the Australia v India test match series (called the Border-Gavaskar Trophy) is one of the biggest international test series on the cricketing calendar. Going to India and winning a series is very difficult, the last time Australia did it was in 2004 (with one of their greatest ever teams). This Australian team is the strongest in a while, yet India are also currently a strong test cricket team.
Smith has always been an eccentric batsman, and does stuff like that often, but it can be excused as he’s one of the best test batsmen in the world. Jadeja is also a very good bowler and set him up perfectly to get him out.
No one cares about Australia-India in Australia. The Ashes is waaaay more important. Mainly because the English dont doctor the pitchers or cheat as much as Indian.
Winning a test in India is rightfully termed as "the final frontier". THE most difficult team to face at home conditions.

Jimmy! Absolutely excellent breakdown from this Aussie former (very ordinary) cricketer who is mates with a lot of REAL players. You're right there is so much nuance in the game and the huge difference between T20, ODI and Tests makes them totally different games. Tests are the purest, strategic form of the sport. For someone who's a US sports expert with the extreme volume of work you've got on there, I'm impressed you even took time to watch this one, but top marks! I can see your love for great athleticism and sportsmanship.
Part of the strategy in tests is the slow degradation of the pitch. It's prepared so it will dry out over time and change the way the ball bounces then spins or cuts, or swings in the air. In humid weather on a pitch with extra moisture, that favours the faster bowlers with more bounce and swing. One side of the ball only is shined up, then the swing bowler delivers it with the seam vertically so the air moves faster over one side than the other and the ball bends late toward the rougher side. We also have reverse swing which is more like baseball's curve. When the pitch is very dry and cracking up, that's better for the spin bowlers.
Jadeja is a left handed orthodox, off or finger spinner, so it's turning the opposite way from a "normal" off-spinner. He flips the fingers over the seam almost in a clicking type action. The other type is a wrist or leg-spinner who flips their wrist to give even more turn on the ball the other way ... sort of like you would spin a top into motion.
Even a tiny change at the point of releasing the ball can wildly change the amount of spin on the ball and the direction of that spin and amount of bounce off the pitch. It can come out of the back of the hand and spin the other way or as a top-spinner hurry onto the batsman. There are dozens of different types of delivery - even more than baseball because you have that extra element of the pitch and its condition. The batsman has to compensate for all those variables, and even though the speed is lower at 80mph or lower, the ball is delivered from 22 yards away and it might bounce only a couple of yards in front of the bat so the change has to be incredibly fast.
I think test cricket is like war. Lot of strategies goes in. You have to play session by session to win tests and the most interesting part of the test matches are pitches which changes day by day.

As an Indian American growing up playing baseball but watching cricket with my dad, I love that you're bringing the sport to the American audience. when people say test cricket is just a 5 day game, they don't see the intricacies of the game, and how much it's like chess. Glad that you are starting to enjoy the game, and hopefully the ICC, and BCCI in particular see the value and don't take down your cricket videos.

@@boxoftin BCCI especially are very strict on their broadcast rights in terms of highlights and other India Cricket content. that's why it's so hard to find indian cricket highlights that aren't bootlegged on youtube. compare that england or australia cricket, they provide high quality highlights on their own pages

Good analogy. Test cricket indeed has aspects like classical chess. Having mental fortitude over a long duration separates the best from the rest.

Something didn't work, and before getting caught up in the moment he checks his facts: where did I have the bat? How was I standing? What lanes were available for the ball? Even as an English person I can appreciate Steve Smith. He started his career as a very average batter and then turned himself into one of the greatest ever. Teammates say they can hear him shadow batting in his hotel room in the middle of the night before games and apparently he gets his wife to feed balls to him so he can bat at home. He’s a real win for all of us who are obsessive fans of any sport haha.

There's nothing like test cricket. When you get a gun bowler like Jasprit Bumrah in form facing off against any of the world's best batsmen every delivery is a must watch. His spell in the 2021 4th test on Day 5 against England at Lords may have been the best display of fast bowling since those devastating West Indies attacks.

Brit here, loved and played baseball most of my life. Test match cricket and baseball are the two best sports in the world, and share many similarities. One off-the-field element that contributes to my love of both sports is how amazing they are on the radio. They have produced all time greats like Vin Scully and Richie Benaud. I'm lucky enough to be a Giants fan so get to listen to Jon Miller and Dave Fleming every day in the summer. Sprinkle in some David Lloyd, and Henry Blofeld talking about pigeons... Magic! I was in the audience for this match and let me tell you that everyone in the stadium was disappointed that the match was over in three days. Each ticket allowed access for all five days of the match and people had attended from different cities to come watch it (including me). This just shows the love people have for this sport, that they watched the same match for around 20 hours but were sad that it was over too early!
Jadeja is such a damn good cricketer and fights like a tiger. He then scored 60-odd runs (not out) to rescue India from a tight spot.

I know they say it's 50mph, but it's honestly not slow at all. The fact it bounces and then spins/doesn't spin adds so much complexity to dealing with it, you basically have to rely completely on muscle memory. So much respect for these players, even if they look silly when they miss.

honestly they miss all the time..even top players. Its not uncommon to not score a run for 20-30 balls even for top batters in test cricket.

Such a great breakdown! As a fellow left arm spinner I genuinely love watching Jadeja bowl. His ability to push the straight one or “arm ball” comes entirely from his wrist position and sliding it through slightly faster. With a straight firm wrist, he can push it on where it doesn’t spin the other way. With a bent wrist, he gets the normal tradition spin on the ball for a lefty (bouncing and going offside)

This, honestly, is your best Cricket Breakdown yet.
You will see that the second ball in the split screen is bowled with a flatter trajectory. It hurries on a little bit relative to the more flighted ball on the left of the split screen. It's probably delivered a smidgen quicker in the air, maybe 3-4 mph faster.
Great comment. Jimmy would be interested in a spinner's flight of the ball, dip and float movement in or away, just like baseball has sliders and cutters.

He could always contact the ICC (the game's international governing body), the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India - arguably the single most influential national governing body), or ESPN. ESPN+ is carrying this Test Match (which is in its third day as of today, with India building a sizable lead in the first innings) through their colleagues at Disney+ Hotstar. The online cricket community has noticed Jomboy, and it honestly wouldn't surprise me at all if he turns up in some official capacity for the tournament's broadcast content.
As someone from the UK who knew nothing about the nuances of baseball until I started watching your breakdowns, as soon as you started with cricket I couldn't wait to see you get into the minutiae of spin bowling. It's *fascinating* stuff isn't it? So glad you're enjoying it.
Thanks for your video. I grew up on a steady diet of North American sports, including baseball. I began following T20 when I moved to the Southern Hemisphere. It wasn't long until the time when I began watching Test matches which I really enjoy for the strategy and the up-and-down cycles: T20 led me to Tests. As the great Shane (Warney) Warne once said: "a Test match across days is always won by the best team." There's a reason why the pitches tend to be "spicier" on the Asian subcontinent, and it always teaches us that speed/pace isn't always king (but helpful). It's remarkable how the quality of pitch, the amount of moisture, the amount of grass all contribute to improving wicket-taking chances from spin-bowling. And that also speaks to a major component of the game: what does the pitch offer to the ball that's been bowled (aside from baseball-like full tosses)?
T20, football and any other 3 hour game doesn't have the tussle, mind game,and chances to make a comeback after u fuck up.

I really enjoy your videos about cricket, in its various forms. Still don't search it out on the internet to watch but am learning more all the time, thanks to you.
I used to bowl leg-spin as a kid, and although this is in NZ, our home ground was incredibly dry and dusty, with a low slow pitch. I still remember one game where the pitch was just so dusty, and I was pitching it outside leg and turning it square (I usually wasn't a massive turner of the ball, because I wasn't that good).
It was just the best feeling. Except that unfortunately my wicket-keeper couldn't deal with it any better than the batsman, and the outfield was lightning fast... four byes :(
Then they went in and installed an artificial pitch, and not one of the simple old matting-on-concrete ones (which suit wrist-spin okay -- tennis ball bounce makes top-spin very effective, and wrist-spin naturally generates top-spin and bounce). No, it was a fancy one with proper texture that made the ball skid. Fine for a finger-spinner who can fire it in and make use of the skiddy nature to bowl defensively, but as a wrist spinner I just had nothing in my toolbox and was useless on it.

It can end anywhere between 2 to 5 days and if it's going for 5 days it's either boring at one point or it will super freaking entertaining there will be no middle ground

It's crazy, the one on the right was spinning faster but the one on the left was teetering off axis, crazy the left of ball control in cricket, in baseball, when they try high and inside after 5 pitches they hit by pitch

Come on, dude... Smith paid an enormous toll for that debacle. Has anyone else ever paid a such a high price for doing something which has been a dirty secret in cricket for more than 30 years...? Other nations have given zero fucks and let their cheating players off with a slap on the wrist. The Australian cricket board suspended Smith for 12 months... Stripped him of the captaincy.. He was deserted by all his sponsors... Upwards of $10 million in lost earnings... People took a lot of glee in bashing him, but I don't think the punishment fit the crime. He was a relatively young, inexperienced Australian captain who was led astray by one or two of the more senior players in the team... I don't think he was the instigator of it, but as captain he bore the brunt of responsibility. The thing is, every cricket fan knows damn well that ball-tampering is widespread and that it has been for decades. So why is Smith pointed at as the arch-villain when everyone else has been using the same dodgy tactics all these years?

t20 is about skill and luck and power hitting, Test Cricket is more a reflection about the entire cricketing system of the countries playing

Signed-in to youtube and subscribed just for appreciating your efforts to explaining cricket. The love for cricket makes me want to appreciate any efforts made to make it global. I just don’t want it to die but rather flourish. It slowly is dying esp test cricket and I just hope US and European nations pick up the sport seriously and hopefully make it bigger.

The ball on the left has more flight landing on the ground at a steeper angle, on the right it’s delivered flatter hence skidding on to go straight without much turn.
