Thanks! Someone asked me a while ago why I default to OpenMandriva instead of Mageia so I figured I'd give it a try (maybe that was you? I couldn't find the reply anymore). Tbh it "feels" more like the old Mandriva than OpenMDV does!
@@ex-itguy Can't remember if it was me or not lol, but yeah I agree, Mageia really keep closer to their roots, I suppose it's because most of the original developers of Mandriva made up the Mageia team, and the influence has stayed :)
Well the funny thing is that OpenMandriva is the 'official' continuation of Mandriva, but indeed Mageia was forked from Mandriva by ex-employees so... not sure which of the two has a bigger amount of original devs working on it. I'm planning to do a comparisation video in the future. If only so I can show-off my Mandrake 6.0 box lol
pretty neat little machine! And nice video. I would love to see you go more in-depth on the nuances and pitfalls of audio production on linux. Im still on windows and am worried about switching because I'm worried about drivers for hardware and how good software for music/voice may or may not be on Linux. I have a steinberg ur22 myself. In addition to other things.
Thanks! The biggest issue actually is commercial plugins. I used a trial of iZotope RX for the video's voiceover through wine and yabridge which works fine, but I couldn't get the Izotope portal to run (or actually: I couldn't login) so I couldn't enable my license for it. Apart from that it works quite well without much hassle. :) I don't know enough about the subject to do a video on it though. The plugin issue is the sole reason I'm using a MacBook for recording my vocals and voiceovers. But I might when I learn a bit more about it. :)
Really curious about any overheating issues with this PC over time. Some additional test you should add to your test of old PCs is video playback of common video standards (AVC 1080p, HEVC 10-bit 4K...). "TH-cam playback" is a codec lottery.
Good point, I'll make sure to keep some videos apart for that! I haven't noticed any heat issues with this machine but haven't had it turned on longer than 3 or 4 hours at a time.
It doesn't surprise me that this machine is still doing so well. My daily driver is 8 years old. The only thing that even came close to prompting me to upgrade was Windows 11's artificial system requirements, but instead of worrying about that, I upgraded to Kubuntu. I haven't regretted my choice.
Actually, this one had an unactivated Windows 11 installed when I got it, but it could be that the friend that gave it to me had used a modified installer to accomplish that. :)
@@ex-itguy Oh yeah, bypassing Windows 11's installation requirements is a cake walk. These are (currently) just reinforced by checks at install time, and they can all be disabled with registry hack ATM. The problem is that (and this has already happened), any patch Tuesday, Windows could add a requirement for an instruction set that your CPU doesn't have, and then *poof*, no more booting! While my CPU still does work, I rely on this machine too much to chance that happening some random month, say, right before I need to file my taxes.
True, it's insane they enforce stuff they don't actually need to run the OS. On the other hand there's Apple that only supports a device for so long and doesn't even give you the option to pay for future upgrades. And then there's the open source stuff ;)
Thanks! Well it's not the most amazing machine ever but considering the thing is 9 years old and can probably be obtained quite cheap I think it's not bad at all. :)
Nice video mate! It's also cool to see Mageia linux featured, it's a great distro, and my daily driver :)

What are your thoughts on this machine? Did I miss anything? Let me know! 🙂

Would you consider spinning up Proxmox and making a ceph cluster? or maybe getting a few and making a Docker Swarm?
To be honest, that seems quite boring, sorry. I quit that kind of work for a reason. 😅
Leuke video! Met een ssd en Linux is dit een leuk computertje voor basis taken!

This tiny thing has Upgradeable RAM,SATA drives, better than a Mac for sure
Indeed, my 2015 Macbook had the ram soldered on and needs an adapter to change the ssd... I guess it's the same for Mac minis from that time.
