Hi, nioce video the smallest distro i use on older machines for a full / partial desktop experience is a old version of Linux Puppy ( 5 i think ) , the iso is about 75 meg you can run it of a cdrom, it can run in ram, or run in ram and use a small swap file on the hdd for permanent files eg run a spreadsheet in ram with the os but save a spreadsheet or word document to the hard drive - i think the swap file is linux format, but once there you can copy it to the fat16/32/ntfs windows partition to use on the old Microsoft OS Everything compressed on a floppy - great I have a modified by some chinese people boot disk with striped down win 311 all on a single floppy, similarly it copies the boot to ram, then expands everything in ram disk The good thing with Puppy running of the cdrom is it reminds me of say a commodore 64 or amiga, because you cannot corrupt the os and you can save your files - so pretty good, the auto probe hardware works fine, and you can install the pupets ?? ( linux puppy add on modules ) - i use the puppydosbox - works very good on pentium 4 and mainly sun some older dos games or my microsoft works for dos, even the turbo pascal compiles and stuff i wrote 1985-2000 works fine
HI, I guess like anything , give it a go and see if it works. I know a few older people who have older machines that are not "the best" for modern day. This is like Pentium 4 machines and machines made say 2000-2010 Some people lie my elderly neighbours have what was a new machine at the time and fully loaded genuine software, while it may be 20 years old it works fie, i gave them my old 2007 apple sno laptop with osx 10.6, office and the apple pack or whatever it was called with the apple version of office themed programs ( similar to linux say libre office ) But today banking is not secure, you tube wont really run on it and it is not secure. Some cannot afford or want a new pc, bu luckily linux Min and even puppy runs find on a core2duo for example and is modern(ish) My old intel macbook that i gave them, has Linux Mint V18 dual boot, so they can run all the office apps in apple, and reboot to Linux Mint for email / banking So ReactOS may be a option - - does it have a native dos mode ??? - if not will dosbox run ??? While stating the obvious, the oldest machine in my collection is Pentium 100 running win 311, and a Pentium 2 running win98, they all work fine as they did out of the box, they all talk to each other and win 10 ok, and can see the raspbery pi. the only issue is the windows 311 and 98 can see the win 10 shares but cannot see the files, ( they used to ) but from a win 7 or newer i cans see the early windows files shared folder and drop files to the older win 31 98 machines. ( The win 98 i do recall, stopped after a win 10 update on newer machines and needed that machine to run the login manager and password and i think change setting to SMB2 - it is inconvenient to get up walk out of the old pc room and go to a new machine to drop files from a newer windows version then go back ) Like you said - it appears still in Alpha I enjoyed your plug and pray - that was my motto back in the win95 days, plus after many issues i learned to take out all unnecessary hardware eg sound / lan / video/ scsi and get a base machine install running and stable first, then shut down, change 1 item only and reboot - it helps not to confuse the Os or give it to many choices at once - Nortons Ghost was my best friend Some early IDE cables do not have the missing (blanked of pin ) so you can put it in upside down, they also do not always have that little key way ( the small plastic stub in the middle ) so that the cable can only go in one side - again that was a later change. Generally you look for the number one on the pin out, some times it is not there, it may be a red mark or a little triangle or arrow - and not all machines had pin 1 at the back facing the left from rear view and not all had pin one next to the power connector - fun and games Oh nice video Regards George
I do enjoy watching ReactOS TH-cam videos whenever they appear in my feed, and it's cool that you ran it on bare metal. I still consider it to be rather useless. It's a reverse engineer of a very old version of Windows, which is by no means practical. It would be cool to run it in PCem since that will allow emulating old hardware, but I don't see how ReactOS can "do" anything practical. It would make more sense to have a reverse-engineered open source Windows 10, but we all know that would require tremendous amount of work, and probably won't happen...the world of operating systems and software compatibility today is already drastically different from 20+ years ago!
I guess you're right, but if they can get better hardware support (and stability...) and modern browser support it could be a decent one for older computers.
Master should be at the end of the cable. Even if you jumper the middle one to master and the end device to slave, that is non-standard. By the way, I liked the video, not here to bother you.
You're right, but the cable wasn't long enough and I've been stupid enough to throw away my IDE cables a few years back haha
what if the hdd is clicking and not hdding
Just use full disk encryption lol. Ez
Sure, but that won't help uncle Bill who just wants to sell his old pc and now gets all this advice about hammers... and encryption? ;)
Really curious about any overheating issues with this PC over time. Some additional test you should add to your test of old PCs is video playback of common video standards (AVC 1080p, HEVC 10-bit 4K...). "TH-cam playback" is a codec lottery.
Good point, I'll make sure to keep some videos apart for that! I haven't noticed any heat issues with this machine but haven't had it turned on longer than 3 or 4 hours at a time.
Is that second PCI-E slot 16x or 8x? Maybe you could try putting that passive GPU in the lower slot and it would get more airflow from the PSU fan. You could also run an nvme ssd card in the other PCI-E slot for fast storage.
The psu fan sucks air from the case, so that won't improve airflow to the gpu in this case. Not sure about the second slot. Not sure if the gpu uses all 16 lanes either (I... I should check that 😅)
just use `shred`
Not directly available on any Linux distro, so harder to explain. This is basically the same and widely available.
I like reactOs just like win2k/xp-classic. May be i try.
2:45 I'm glad you did a video cut and reversed the IDE cable to match Master and Slave. I was stressing at the screen when I saw you plug the end of the cable into the CD-Rom set as slave. Yes I'm old. This OS gives me Lindows flashbacks 😁
Haha, yeah but that's the only way this one fits. ;) I'll probably put a sata ssd in it later on, then the cd drive can be matter again.
I was hyped for the concept, but what a disappointment in execution. I wish the dev team had the resources and manpower to fully take ReactOS to its full potential, the world needs a friendly alternative to Windows that isn't Linux or macOS.
I agree, it would be great to see ReactOS a viable alternative for your average old computer. :)
I didn't expect to see someone install a spinning drive for an OS in 2024, even for an intentionally low end build.
To be honest, it was mostly so I could do that IDE talk haha
The browser must be too small to have JS support so no modern site will load... for sure!
Well on the big image there should be enough space for that I guess.
I must admit - I really like your music.
Awesome! 🤘🏻
PRETTY SURE, HAMMER WORKS MUCH FASTER !
I didn't say this was the fastest solution, did I?
I would love to make this my Windows replacement OS. I'm still hanging on to my Windows 7 for dear life as I refuse to "upgrade" any newer integrated spyware featured Windows OS from our Microsoft overlords. I have actually committed to donating $5 a month to this project several months ago, in hopes that project will eventually be a serious contender. I seriously hope a lot more people will contribute towards this project. And no, I have no affiliation with them. I'm just a guy who doesn't want my OS spying on my activities, policing my files, and secretly reporting everything back to headquarters. I have lost all faith and trust with Microsoft after Windows 7, and even with Windows 7, I have a some concerns on what it might be collecting from me. Also, I hope this project NEVER integrates AI into it. If it was made as an optional add-on, then that would be okay because then we could still choose to not have it.
How worth it is it these days? I tried it like 10 years ago, but it crashed all the time.
About the same, but they seem to be making some steps lately.
Just use Darik's Boot and Nuke - DBAN
If I got a quarter for anyone saying that I'd be rich by now.
And here is yet another an awesome ex-it guy video!
Thanks! 😃

Hi, greetings from 🇳🇱
why do u destroy data there in first place
Because you don't want anyone to read it. But it's a bit stupid to destroy perfectly fine hardware to achieve this. ;)
@@ex-itguy when i get an new hdd i take my main hdd, move data from it to the new one, and put it as a backup
@@ex-itguy also whoever the fuck cares abt a bunch of downloaded vids, pics, programs and some mario 64 romhacks
Looks like jumping in a time machine and going back to the early 2000s. It's a shame it's so flaky but it's a huge undertaking. I hope MS don't sue them.
I would like to think that after a few decades MS should be aware of this project haha. But they make very sure not to use any actual Windows code, so I don't think there is anything to sue about.
Reality: nobody uses it because nothing of it works. It's not "compatible" at all.
Sadly, this is the truth. But, they seem to be making some big steps lately!
@@ex-itguy It's based on the Win 2003NT-kernel. The Win32 API substitution is a poor Wine implementation. This thing has always been a anti-MS meme OS with no practical application.
Smash it. Better safe than sorry 👍

Leuke video! Die laptop mag dan wel oud zijn, hij is nog prima voor kinderen! En met Linux zal het moeilijk zijn om het systeem overhoop te halen!
Inderdaad! En anders doen we het gewoon nog eens over. 😁
Ahhh i forgot in fedora that armagetron is packaged as "armacycles-ad", lol. Anyway, great video, nice to see my comment was helpful :)
Ah right! I guess I should install that one then 😄 Your comment was very helpful! Thanks again!
Nice video! When you want to teach them about hardware and OS an optiplex is very durable option, I still have my optiplex from when I was a child. I dropped a coin on the motherboard one time, it sparked and shut off then it turned back on like nothing happened lol. it was already 8 years old when I got it, and its about 18 now and still solid. Truly the toyota corolla of computers! Also Kblocks is a pretty good tetris clone.
Ah yes these Optiplexes are pretty well built. Kblocks is a good suggestion! Thanks!
ReactOS gone too much far ahead on this new release, way better than it was before, they done really great jib improve user experience
Let's hope they can keep going like this :)
very cool, just make sure to keep your kids away from Richard Stallman.
Oof, yeah before you know they would tell me to install Emacs!

Our children are very happy with their own laptop to play around with. And this using only open source software, free as in speech but also free as in beer (or... lemonade, I guess). What do you think? Did I miss any great titles?
hello the drive must be readable to do this.. if drive is not readable??
I thought I responded to this but it seems to have disappeared (that or my mind is playing tricks on me). Anyway, you obviously can only do this on working hardware. If it's broken you should trash it indeed.
Made. DVD Setup did not work blue of death computer froze ?
Annoyingly it just doesn't work on all systems. I had the same on a core2quad machine.
If you are that worried just keep it and reuse it. Of course I am talking about the average user.
You won't believe how often people who just want to sell their old computer get advised to destroy their storage... as if we humans don't create enough waste as it is.
@ex-itguy I know it's common practice in America. The only time I throw out my storage is when it's broken already. In Europe it is expensive. BTW DBAN is also a useful software that does the same thing we are shown in the video. It just has a GUI and a bit more user-friendly. Just be careful with it. To have somebody recover your info after using these methods will most likely be very costly and time consuming. So even if somebody is trying to be malicious maybe he has to know the data importance first. I wouldn't worry about it that much.
i fukin loved intro music
looks like win 98
2000 actually, but the interface is almost the same indeed.
I think the disk cradle is missing, at the bottom of the front face, where you can see two tabs with two holes... Or these two tabs were used directly to screw the disk... I Own a packard Bell mini-tower from this era, in which the - now SSD - drive is screwed vertically in the front.
That's what I thought at first, but 3.5" disk just fits there without a cradle. It just wasn't an option to put the ide disk there. But a disk with dead sectors should be destroyed anyway. This video is meant for people who destroy perfectly fine disks.
The firmware of the drive regularly swaps failing sectors with hidden spare sectors, hiding the failing sectors. These hidden sectors can't be overwritten, you really need the hammer for that.
But the data in these sectors isn't very reliable anyway. Also it would be very rare for your sensitive data to be fully in one of those sectors.
@@ex-itguy The drive swaps the sectors before they become unreadable, they could still be readable 10 years later. One sector could easily hold all the passwords you ever used on that device. Overwriting only the currently visible sectors is better than noting, but not a secure solution. Folding or even shredding the platters is much better than software solutions, unless the firmware provides secure ways handle hidden sectors, for example by storing all data in encrypted form and offering ways to clear those keys.
hey smokers drauga1 here today we are going to install reactos.
10:35 Is that the sound of the IBM PC Speaker?
yep, all the sound I got without soundcard drivers :)
@@ex-itguyAs a Fanboy/Hardcore Fan of the IBM PC Speaker. This doom source port is interesting because it plays the music instead of sound effects
I thought that was interesting as well indeed!
@@ex-itguy I need to check out the music. How did you set it to run to the IBM PC Speaker?
I didn't, everything I did to run it is in the video. :)
My recommendation: Do this on an *old* diskless PC booted from a live Linux thumb drive, and only attach the disks you _want_ to erase. This way, there's less/no risk of accidentally erasing the _wrong_ drive with all of your mission critical 💩 on it! 👍 For those nervous about using DD, the _shred_ utility can do the same thing with different synaptics. Like DD it can also be used to erase files as well as disks, and the same caution needs to be taken when running as root. 👍 SSDs: Unlike HDDs, SSDs can be securely cleared in a single write. Use a block size in DD that's identical to the physical sector side of the SSD (Usually 4K); Better brand SSDs will automatically convert sector writes of all 0x00 to _TrimAll_ commands, allowing the SSD to self-manage the block erasure process in the most efficient and wear-friendly fashion. 💯
For SSDs you're better off using a secure erase tool like blkdiscard, but I fully agree with your post.
Fast mention on this one, but You should definitely not be using a Packard Bell machine for ANY kind of OS testing ... They used their own proprietary hardware on the boards, and it cause tons of problems with drivers back in the older Windows days. They were great games machines with rel Windows, but only when You went to the actual PBell support site & downloaded the board drivers & overlays for installation right after the initial Windows install itself. Anything without the custom drivers at the board level would just not run the hardware correctly, & it didn't support the current DirectX or slot tech properly. G'Luck!!!
It worked quite well though. ;)
GREAT - THANKS !! What is the memory usage ?? I have here an old DELL Dimension 2400 with Pentium 1 Core CPU and 1 GB RAM. Want to give a working system to poor people so they have a computer. Can you help me out ?? You can answer me in Dutch ....
Oof, don't give anyone a system with ReactOS at this point. It's really not ready. Depending on their needs Haiku might be nice (I have a video on that too), or simply a Linux distro, but you might want a bit more memory to run a decent distro.
@@ex-itguy Thanks
At the moment I run MiniOS x86 on the DELL Dimension, and it runs quite well. Maybe interesting to make a TH-cam movie from that ??
Seems yet another small Linux distro. Looks nice though, I'll check it out. Thanks!
„Why would you smash your hdd instead of doing this??“ 🤡 - too much effort - less fun than smashing it - takes way longer - still less safe than killing it physically - if u wanna give ur hdd a second life just wipe it like usual, if not then ur gonna throw it in the trash anyway - so why not have fun doing that?
This is obviously not aimed at people that are going to throw it in the trash. We humans create enough waste as it is already.
@@ex-itguy damn i was on a rant there, thanks for genuinely good answer. Good luck with your small channel ;)
