I just picked up a 1976 IT400 a couple of weekends ago. She's a rough mutt but she's mostly in one piece for the most part. I'm currently planning on what to do to it as it's missing the seat and the filler neck threads for the gas cap are broken off the tank. The 1976 seems to be the hardest year to find replacement anything as far as seat and tank goes. I'm going to try to salvage the tank that's on it. I also have the idea of turning it into an off-road scrambler. :)
I bought one of these 250s as my first ever dirt bike last summer, and it scared the crap out of me when I first rode it. I'm slowly getting used to the power output and I am LOVING it. These bikes are awesome!
I had an 80 250 long time ago. Just a beast of a woods bike. I ran bell ray full synthetic at 50:1 went one or two sizes leaner on the pilot jet than stock, size bigger on main and jet needle in stock position. Stock pipe dg silencer. Dang i miss that bike
@@thetrumbowergarage Sorry just say your questions. I think it cost me around 70 bucks or so. You do it all in paperwork and I used this guys way and it worked perfect. th-cam.com/video/hcHKNoMHDSs/w-d-xo.html People cover their ears when I'm at a stop light and take off. Its fun to put around for a bit but the woods is the best.
@@thetrumbowergarageat least put a top end and fresh reeds in it, you’ll be shocked. Those old IT’s always started crazy like that, make sure your float height is good. It needs a clutch too BTW, lol sorry I’ve owned a bunch of IT’s
Once you get that dialed in your gonna love it. I have the same bike same year but replacing crank seals that are just old. The electric lights are another thing with these. I replace my bulbs that would blow in 5 mins like 3 times till I realized it was a common problem but can be fixed. I just got NYS plates on mine. I registered it in Vermont got a plate then registered in NY because my Vermont reg was the title. I love the loopholes. Good Luck and post progress please.
Nice! how much did it cost to do the vermont loophole? I haven't worked on it in like 2 months. it just gets kind of old when it starts at full throttle for no reason. I think my carb slide is super worn out since it looks pretty brassy color. It is a fun bike but I have been busy working on my cars. Hopefully I will have time to work on it some!
Nice it. Check your throttle cable, make sure working freely and that it has some slack at idle. Check throttle slide make sure its not sticking, check for bent needle valve,
The carb was junk. I have since replaced the card with another used on from eBay. it runs so much better. The old slide was so worn out it was brassy looking.
Your air screw is probably turned out too far. It's why it's idling to high. Usually that's the case when your idle circuit is plugged up at might be why it's not starting well maybe you should clean that carburetter
I have cleaned the carb out 2 times now. I usually run the cheapest gas. But I mix it to 32:1 always. And I always let off the gas to shift the gordos volume just isn’t that great.
Yeah she is. Actually the reason I havn’t worked on it since spring is that the throttle would stick and that was kind of scary. I switched out the carb since the old one the slide was junk. But I just need to ride it.
@@thetrumbowergarage no. You need to get the piston on compression before kicking. You've ware out the mechanism, ideal gear, and side over,. just taken 10years of life out of it
Had a 1977 IT 400. Great Bike
It sure is fun! I have heard that the 250s were faster than the 400s.

Try using a hair dryer to heat the plastic on your front fender and you can bend it back into place. It worked for me.

I will have to check those. I kind of think it is the slide because I could see a lot of wear on it.
Cool video. Amazing you could get beast kickstarted after such a long time. Enjoyed!
Thank you!
Check for an air leak on the intake with carb cleaner

Sweet bike! I’ve watched this video a few times haha! I’ve got a 1977 IT250, fun old bikes!

I already cleaned the carb a lot. I think the carb is just junk. the slide has a lot of wear on it and the carb shows some too.
Sweet bike brooooo!!
Clean the carb out , run premium gas only , 32;1 mix ratio and no gas when u shift
I have cleaned the carb out 2 times now. I usually run the cheapest gas. But I mix it to 32:1 always. And I always let off the gas to shift the gordos volume just isn’t that great.
Boy she’s tired, don’t be afraid to put some $ in it, they last 4ever once freshened up, and they run good enough too scare ya sometimes 😆

I also have a 1979 IT 250.. I haven't run it in years.. I need an air filter.. Where do you get your parts??
I usually just buy stuff on eBay. I think there are uni and maybe K&N filter available on eBay for like 30 bucks.
Would someone show him how to kick a 2stoke without destroying the complete right hand side of the engine, or take the bike of him.
This is my first time riding a 2 stroke and I wasn't destroying the engine. I wasn't kicking it that hard.
