Very much this. Marriage is a verb, it requires teamwork. Not caring about your spouse's emotional needs - even if these translate to providing material needs that are within your financial means - sounds neglectful to me. And that's not even going into the fact that the spouse is apparently is a lot more around the house than OP, who spends most of his time at work, or taking the family on trips. Yes, then it is easy not to care a lot about what your house looks like. Ffs.
