I analyzed this song for my 11th grade Honors English class in 1986. My whole class was rocking out and the teacher started off angry that I had chosen such an "Awful" song. By the end of it, she wanted to listen to it again and go back and deconstruct everything on a whole different level than any other song presented in my class. Im 52 now and this song is still in my top 5 of all time.
Hey, that's a great story! I can totally picture it. I've been a metalhead for most of my life, and am now an English tracher. I love seeing the reaction in the class when I say "today we're gonna analyze some poetry" and then pull out Iron Maiden or Bruce Springsteen - and then hearing the students whistling or humming the tune when they leave class 😄
I did the very same thing with Iron Maidens Heaven can wait in religion class. A lot of kids became rockers that day -and maybe even a teacher. She borrowed the tape
Concerned 80's mothers: "Metal music leads to drugs!!!!" Metallica: Releases one of the best metal/thrash songs about how drugs will end up ruining and taking over your life if you do them.
As a recovering addict and alcoholic I can definitely relate to this song. Just celebrated 28 months clean and sober on the 17th of last month. Little update. Closing in on three years clean and sober. Addiction is the master of puppets, but it's no longer my master. Update. I have three years four months clean and sober.
@@michaelshultz1590 its just a way to get more views and likes. I don't mean that they hate the song, of course not, but they would never buy any trash metal song, neither this one. Because this style is not new, because they don't have 12 years old and because all reactions are over reacted.
It's cool that they all recognize the brilliance of the song. I'm a 48-year-old black male, who started listening to Metallica at 13. My black buddies used to make fun of me for listening to it, but I didn't care. I literally wore out cassettes of their first few albums. I listen to just about everything, but Metallica is one of my all-time favorites.
This song represents the highs, the lows and everything in between when it comes to how drugs can control and determine your ultimate fate. NTM, how drugs will screw up your life.
Yes. The beginning was the urgency for the drug, the middle represents the ecstasy of the drug, and the impending rise in tempo and volume is the follow up urgency for the drug once again. Pretty much explains the horror of drug addiction.
Same. It's just today we hear these reactions/analysis because of the internet. Back then we just listen, vibe and we form our own interpretations and that makes the discussions with our garage bands more interesting.
Master of Puppets resonates to everyone differently. Yes, the lyrics are based on addiction but it could be about anything controlling your life and eventually destroying it. Marriage, your job, a toxic relationship…..many things. Then the music delivers a roller coaster of different emotions. Heavy riffs, beautiful harmonies, sick solos….its so well executed in this song. People will be discovering and embracing this song 100 years from now.
@@KAOTSOUKI i disagree, it's like they had a producer or friends who knew the addiction journey extremely well (they were just alcoholics then).I mean they're talking coke, heroin, or anything snorted and shot up specifically. The addiction journey starts just like the song powerful and kick ass, then depending on the drug but my guess is it's a similar problem, you get the mellow part that doesn't last very long, when you're actually enjoying the effects of the drug. For example, like with let's say - heroin. Then as the chill music is still playing i.e while you're still feeling the influence a creeping drum and guitar riff bring the agony of the sickness, the crawling craving, need for the drug. Afterwards, we're at the end part where it's all gone to shit, heroin snorters or meth or whatever start shooting up shit, never you betray lyric is part you always returning to your master both dealer and drug, you never refuse to take it if offered, then life of death becomes clearer when you're in rehab for the 15th time in 10 yrs, have no surface veins that are visible, your brain turns to shit and you either end up damaged or 6 feet under where there are maggots on your corpse - feeding. If you hadn't died yet, you drift alone on numbered days, and your life truly is out of season. The end can be literal hell where the demonic laugh starts, welcoming you with lots of other less growly but still demeaning laughs coming, or just the everyday you know, look at that fool and what he's done with himself or people who gave up on you laugh at your weakness, stupidity, but mainly sickness. Kinda ironic that they pretty much all turned out to be polyaddicts , self fulfilling prophecy of sorts, which is why James can't downpick anywhere near like he used to , Kirk and his mistakes, not being able to play a simple riff when shown by James , Lars going out of time so much Rebecca or Charismatic voice - I can't remember clearly right now as it's 4 am here - literally thought they were speeding up and slowing down on purpose . Jason (since Clifford Lee Burton passed away when their bus flipped for those who don't know the story if there are such ppl) hooked on pain pills and fuck knows what else when they split up before st Anger was made... James pissing on Layne Staley's death for being a junky at their live shows while he himself barely made it out and so on. But yeah if you didn't know better you can say Lou Reed's Heroin is about flowers, White Rabbit is a tribute to Alice in Wonderland and MInistry's Dark Side of the Spoon album is just a spoof on Dark side of the Moon... Or 10's, Suicide Note 1, Good Friends and a Bottle of Pills, Hard lines Sunken Cheeks are respectively about - 10 packs of cigarettes, getting thru an illness with a little help from your friends and antibiotics, Christian salesmen... Bohemian Rhapsody is about murder not about Freddie coming out as gay and so on. Some songs have ambiguous lyrics , Master isn't one of them. It's a good intro to the stigma and laughs you will get when you're feeling like you're dying, so yeah sorry not even just addiction but very specific hard drug addiction, but I guess if it makes you feel better being angry at your your mom for not giving you that weed money, or your ex for dumping your ass, if your job is being a drug dealer and you get hooked, etc. You can make a song that is called Anti Drug Anthem and the lyrics be literally just Drugs will fuck you up, I can already see ppl saying it was a fucking metaphor for your salary that you're hooked on like heroin, doesn't last long usually, you're happy in the beginning and then you crave it at the end of the month and the real meaning just goes over your head. But yeah, you do you boo :)
I'm not an anglophone and the first time I heard it I couldn't make sense of it. For some reason I imagined Lars throwing eggs and bacon at a mirror. Even after having it explained this image comes up every time I hear the song.
@@skunkugly that wasnt lfr family, that was mr v reacts/ mr video, he's funny af aswell, undoubtedly the best reaction channel on the site edit: nvm it was lfr family, it just sounded like mr video, both are still good though
First time I heard this song was in September 1986 and I was sitting next to a guy who introduced himself as "James" on a non-stop flight from San Francisco to London. He said his band was heading over there to headline their first European tour. I asked him what the name of his band was. He then handed me his cassette of their latest album. Master of Puppets.
I was first introduced to air supply, bee gees, scorpions and classics etc, then went to gnr, journey, bon jovi, Aerosmith, and so on, then one day theres this movie Bohemian rhapsody, at first i didnt like the song then after a few tries i finally appreciate the meaning and beauty of the song, i listen songs of queen nonstop and my top songs are march of the black queen, bo rhap, innuendo, and prophets song, after that, for the first time my mind was blown away when i was first listening to led Zeppelin, stairway was a classic masterpiece then boom, kashmir played and boy i was like drugged, the song was so unique and has an iconic riff, then after a year finally the doors of metal opened for me, enter....... Black sabbath, war pigs, iron man, children of the grave, into the void and so on, then suddenly the auto play was on, which the song plays and i had no idea what it is, then i think "yeah why not? Its good to listen something new once in a while" the songs plays.......... Tewnt!!!!! Ten ten teewwwwwnt!!!! The riff was...... Damn mesmerizing, then the lyrics came i had no idea what its about, but i just kept headbanging to it, after the first part the slow mid section came, and idk how to explain it, it was like me, a human trying to understand whats this beautiful sound playing and i was in total awe, and i think you know the rest.......... MASTER!!!!!!!!
@@dionshare7103 Man idk…you seen the top 100? 😂😂 I think they would appreciate music that takes skill and good song structure for sure though no matter the genre which I can definitely agree with!
Metal always gets a bad rap, but when people go into it with an open mind, Tool, Metallica, Rage, etc., they realize it's a bunch of skilled ass musicians taking music to a whole new level.
If anythng should get a bad rap...it's well rap and most of the new shit out today...produced, autotune, can't play instruments worth shit. Cardi B, BTS, Kanye, etc. I'll always respect real musicians and bands first. And guitar players with skill.
The song can be broken down into four parts. The first part is the drugs telling the addict that they are under their control and that the addict needs them. The second part is slower and is the high the addict feels after taking the drugs. The third part is the addict talking to the drugs and asking basically "why are you doing this to me?" Finally, the fourth part is the drugs talking back to the addict and saying basically "too bad, I still control you" and the cycle starts again. At least that's my take on it.
As an addict for 2.5 decades and recovering, you got it. It’s a mind game going in cycles. The toughest part is denying the chemical from nicotine, alcohol, powder to behavioral addiction as sex, video games, etc. Addiction has overtook society in many ways from substance to other things by technology exploding. This has manipulated humans minds to obsess over this chemical feeling produced by overdoing activities. It’s simple on the surface to explain addiction but when I’ve been through it so long, dive deeper, it gets complex how we chase an illusion. Crazy how we can train or trick our minds to create chemicals to make us so called feel better. Then add substances to enhance the effect. People have issues with both or just one, substances or behavioral. This has us chase an imaginary friend, first rush, materials needed to look certain ways while financially not there, whatever it may be, it never has the answer, just a bad ending… Edit: unless you understand you got a problem, get help and get the fck out. Actually knowing you have the problem is monumental. Still get help and stay with it. That was my BIGGEST fault. I understood and accepted being an addict. Yet kept thinking, I’ll be okay doing this myself. It never worked.
Yep. They were just hitting their stride here! This album came on the scene in the wake of Ride the Lightning which gave hints of what was to come. Master of Puppets was the 2nd stage of a rocket heading for interstellar space and superstardom as a band! And all you suckers doggin’ Lars are just punks who probably never played drums. Lars is the engine behind the band, just like every other drummer is for every band. Without a good drummer it all falls apart, it’s like a beautiful car with a missing engine. Nothing matters or works without that engine. Without Lars this isn’t the same band! Period.
@@richardcooper3507 We don't hate Lars. He just got lazy. Timing not the same. Their original songs are played slower maybe cause got older. Don't know the excuse. Cliff Burton was a major part of the musical compositions. They just aren't the same band. I know bands change but way play songs isn't better. Go look up Orion original for a better example of Cliff's prowesses as not just a musician but someone who wrote this. Just old metalhead perspective is all.
Just remember that this was written in '85 & recorded & released in' 86 and they were 23yrs old...... Played their own instruments.... No electronic bullshit!.... State of the art speed metal..... Flawless
There were certain parts of the album that were composed even before they hit 22. And that's not even the craziest part. Kill 'em All was released in 1983, Ride the Lightning in 1984 and Master of Puppets was played during concerts in 1985 and released in 1986. And those albums are said to be some of the greatest metal albums of all time. In only 3 years.
'You can feel the pain..." I love watching newbies discover what many mistakenly describe as "loud noise." Metal and in particular Metallica is deep, incredibly complex musically, outstanding lyrics and unrivaled performance. Metal is the classical music of our time - loud, rebellious and capable of pulling out emotions you did not realize you had. Welcome to the headbanger's ball.
A very misunderstood and misrepresented form of music demonized by people who have never taken a moment to truly sit down and listen to it. It makes me so happy as well to see people who fell for the lies give it a chance and realize just how wrong they were and come to enjoy this beautiful style of music.
To be fair if you understand the science of how sound works and how much work the brain has to do to deconstruct a single sound wave into its component parts and hear the guitar, drums, bass, and vocals as separate and not jumbled together, it makes sense why people not used to the heavy distortion literally cannot hear the music and just hear noise. You have to expose your brain to the sound of a heavy distortion guitar a while before it finally "clicks" when your auditory processing can pull it out as a separate instrument to send to your conscious mind that way. Until that happens your brain literally hears all the parts, vocal, guitar, and drum, as just one combined single sound and that's where the accusations of it just being noise come from. The heavy distortion really confuses the brain's audio processing when it's not used to it and masks the signal. After you hear it enough times then your brain learns the patterns the instruments make and thus it can finally deconstruct the sound into component parts.
MOP is the single greatest song ever done by a Thrash band. It has EVERYTHING and it takes you EVERYWHERE. It is, imo, one of the greatest songs ever written PERIOD.
@@amr4336 MOP had even better writting than RTL... MOP has deeper and more creative lyrics, also it brought a lot more progression, transitions and melody into their songs. Many people have RTL as their favorite Metallica album, but MOP and AJFA were the pinnacle of their songwritting hands down.
I just noticed (after watching this compilation for like the 50th time) that nearly everyone had their eyes closed during the middle section. Now that's when you KNOW music is touching the soul. Long live the best rock song EVER.
Oh what I would give to experience this song for the first time again when I first heard the middle I remember for each note it sent chills down my spine and throughout my soul
It's funny as a metalhead because I grew up knowing about the masterpiece that was Master of Puppets and Ride The Lightning, and seeing someone listen to the absolute peak of thrash in a snapshot in time is such a great experience for me personally. Like you just can't recreate the first time you hear something like this.
I use to play this so much back when it came out my cousin wound up saying to me, "no more Master Master". Lol. He loves Metallica now it just took him a little longer to come around.
My mom told me when i was a little baby my favorite songs would be beautiful people and enter sandman, currently 23 and still a metal head, and i appreciate it now even more because of all the trash that is now in modern "music"
This is absolutely so true. I remember the moment I first heard Metallica as a 3rd grader in 93. Enter Sandman. I heard my first “chug” and I knew I wanted to play THAT music. I’ve been playing guitar ever since. Almost tear up.
I can sit here and honestly say I wouldn’t be alive today if it wasn’t for Metallica, in particular this song. It made me realise I wasn’t the only one in the cycle when I was a teenager. It took a while but, Metallica cleaned my shit up eventually. Going to watch Metallica live in the late 80’s/early 90’s was my saviour - forever grateful to these dudes.
I credit fade to black for saving my life. Just knowing I wasn't alone feeling that way made all the difference to 14 year old me. I'm glad you're still here.
No.... YOU cleaned up your own shit!! Never underestemate your own strength!! What Metallica did was simply to open your eyes and nudge you in the right direction. I hope you are doing good, buddy. 😊
The guy at 5:27 nailed it. Shows how well Metallica produces music. That’s the comedown and the breakdown afterwards is the anger and sadness a person feels for being addicted in the first place.
Just imagine HOW badass this was when it was new. I bought this CASSETTE the day it came out! Had already bought Kill Em All AND Ride The Lightning, so I couldn't wait for this to drop. And I was NOT disappointed! Amazing still to this day!
Too true. This was the album that turned me from Hip Hop to Metal. Then Music For The Jilted Generation by the Prodigy in 94 turned me to dance music. 👌
I still literally remembering the first time I heard this song. I was hanging out with my best friend. We were in middle school. We loved bands like The Clash and Sex Pistols. He told me I got to listen to this heavy metal band called “Metallica”. I laughed at the name and he smiled, put on the record and we sat on his bunk bed as he watched my “reaction” to this exact song. And my musical world after that moment, changed forever. It was a life changing experience.
Almost the same to me, for me it was late 2003, St. Anger was just released so it was easy to find almost any Metallica song on the radio back then, I was listen to some FM radio I used to listen while studying for my finals that year, and this music started to sound, I remember when it reach the interlude I became stunned for the entire time, NEVER EVER listened to something like that before, from that moment I fell in love whit this band, till this day
I first heard this song in my third year at university. I'd slept on this band after Ride the Lightning but my roommate loved them and played this and it's not til you sit down like these kids did and truly pay attention that you realize what a masterpiece this tune is. "Genre defining" isn't too big a label to slap on this song.
@@perfectlyperfectpops4203 the classification to metal wasn't given till the late 70s. music in the 50s and 60s was classified as hard rock, rock and roll, or psychedelic rock.
It's hard to believe this song is so old. I was in high school when this album came out. It's amazing to see this coming back around and being enjoyed by this generation.
I don’t know why this makes me emotional seeing non metal heads understand that out music is not just a bunch of screaming and fast guitar playing but instead has more meaning than any other music out there. Something I’ve know for 40 years
So, I remember when my daughter was about 3 years old ( she's 12 now) and Master of Puppets came on the radio. She was literally head banging in her car seat, repeating "Master, Master" and it was the cutest, best moment of my life. The day my baby girl became a metal head...just like her Mama. I was so proud 🤘🖤
Bro... James certainly gets enough credit and more, from, like, everyone. Every flippin' person in Rock knows that Hetfield is the man. Ain't no one saying he is less than a legend in the music world.
Not long ago Elton John told James that ‘Nothing Else Matters’ was a _perfect_ song and one of the greatest songs ever written. If that’s not a gleaming endorsement of your songwriting ability, I don’t know what is!
What i love about that solo is that the timing goes from a fast 1-2-3-4, to a slower 1-2-3 waltz. Slowing it down for the metaphorical "high", then crashing it back down for the withdrawal and the chaos that follows.
To every single one in this video (and to you, Derek Brooks): THANK YOU! You all just put me in a time machine back to 1986, when I was a 14 year old boy, listening to this song the first time...and became a metalhead!!! And even now, 36 years later, the shivers run over my body...METALLICA FOR LIFE!!!!!
The song is timeless, and for a group of young twenty somethings (in 1986) to create such a powerful, significant song was amazing. I've been jamming to Metallica since Kill'em All, and to see a new generation appreciating their classics, is awesome.
@3:01 got me howling. After all the in deep thought of the drug taking over of what this song is about, he comes out with the pimp scenario, too funny. GOLD
Yeah, this editing is FIRE, seriously some of the best. I'm 47, been on the internet since my first PC build in 1997, and this channel has some of the best editing I have seen in these 26 years of daily internet use. These videos are a stunning resume for someone who wanted to go pro and edit for Hollywood or media somewhere.
When this album came out in 1986, I was a sophomore in high school. Guess what I used to pump me up before a football game? Yes, I used a Sony Walkman , tape or CD. High School in the 80s, in Los Angeles was heaven.
I grew up a rap/ hip hop head but a friend introduced me to The four horsemen by Metallica and I was obsessed. Growing up like I did, music was my escape. As a kid my parents would drag me to church where they would play these same records backwards to scare us into believing it was the devil’s music. I would run home after church and play the same album in my Walkman so my parents couldn’t hear. I love music and I absolutely love seeing people discover and appreciate these musicians as well.
If you can play this on guitar, drums or bass - correctly - and I mean actually playing it right, not half assed, then you can say whatever you want. I can play it on guitar and I can tell you that these guys are talented!!! Forget what jealous people say- they don’t deserve to have an opinion.
People love to talk shit on Metallica, but that's just because they are among the most impactful bands of all time and people always like to hate whoever is the best. I know its all opinion, but if you were to have the top names in metal come together and list the best Metal song ever, Master of Puppets would be at the top.
Lars was excellent from Lighting to Justice. Very creative. In 91 they went a different direction, to their credit and success, and he kinda got lazy after that. Lost his chops
This song about drugs so perfectly signifies what a drug addict truly goes through the tempo and crescendo of the song are absolutely perfect and masterfully done to show the first drug fix and then the come down and then the hunt for the next fix. Absolutely brilliant composition.
I tell you, I discovered Kill em All in 8th grade, when no one else had even heard the name Metallica... and was driving age of 15 when Master of Puppets came out. Metallica took the baton of metal and just spearheaded it for the next 20 years. At 50, I still go to concerts, and reminisce about the old times, but am still blown away at their level of performance. Artists like to cite band like Led Zeppelin as influencers, but Metallica defined metal and dominated it. There is no question. Show me the equivalent to Master or Puppets in any other metal band of 1986. It hadn't been defined yet.
5:27 This guy gets it. They all do. That makes me happy... that people today are still appreciating the craftsmanship and genius writing that went into this and many other songs. As someone who has had experience with this topic before, I'm happy to see people understanding and connecting with this. Fantastic video Derek. Keep up the great work!
3:02 this guy SLAYED me. and the editing during all this talking section, to have illumanti guy then finally leading into this. The comedic timing. Bravo man
Truly a masterpiece that speaks to everyone no matter race, creed, or religion. This song evokes emotion in all of us, and in that it brings us closer to each other than we think.
I never thought I'd see the day when I'd like a "reaction" of a reaction video compilation, and yet here we are. Great editing skills with studio track in the background. Amazing ride. You got me Subscribed.
RIGHT?!?!? I'm usually yelling at my screen in 8 out of 10 reactions because of comments (wrong info) made from certain rectors.... LOVED this gang reaction...!!!
The actual progression of this song is just perfect when looked at while considering the lyrics meaning The whole song is a cycle... Fall into crushing mess, recover, crash again, repeat. Even the instrumental aspects alone are a representation of addiction
I've been watching the guys from Lost in Vegas for years. At the beginning, you could tell they had some trepidation at listening to some of the bands....then they began getting excited when they would review bands that they had become familiar with. It's been nice watching their reactions and the way they dissect the lyrics. I've been a life long metal head and the breakdowns those guys give has opened my eyes to songs that I thought I already knew.
Watching these peoples reaction just put the biggest smile on my face!!! Being that I've been a Metallica fan since the 80's as a kid I absolutely love seeing them reach a new generation with their masterful playing and lyrics...... This is why Metallica is known as the best of the best!!!
I'm 54 years old and black and mexican I've been listening to metal since I was 10 years old. I also play guitar and it took me a while to appreciate metallica. I still have a thing for bands like Dream Theater from a musical stand point. I also favor Megadeth. I still love metal to this day and will never change!🤘
I love the comment about no weak points. That is what makes Metallica KINGS. Every member is beyond talented and into gifted level. Best band that ever was.
How did these four musicians come together, out of all the musicians out there, each with his own essential part, doing just the right thing to create their masterpieces? Not a mystic, but it begs the question.
Master of Puppets is, IMO, the best metal song ever written. I never get tired of listening to it. It's a beautiful piece of music that takes you on a journey.... and I love watching people experience it for the first time. ❤🤘😁
Bought this when it came out, played the cassette so much it stretched. Went out and bought another copy, but taped on a dual deck this time. Went through a copy about every three months. This will always be the BEST ALBUM EVER BY ANY ARTIST in my mind. I don't even have to say fight me, because I don't care, this stuff shaped a sixteen year old kid, man. So glad to see people still breaking it out so new fans can be made, and our army of thrashers keeps growing.
Yes, I was introduced to this song through Stranger Things, but I've always been into rock/metal music, especially older music (I just in general love older stuff like music, technology even though I'm only 19 now), and since I somehow got a cheap CD player and then another even cheaper one not too long after from a thrift store (even though they're expensive because they're making a comeback). I ordered some discs to listen to, MoP included, and others too, and I love listening to them. I definitely intend on ordering more, and if I can save up enough money, a cassette player too and ordering cassette tapes to listen to on that too. I feel like listening to music online isn't as exciting as on things like CDs or even cassettes. MP3 players too since I used to use them a lot years ago, but I still find the other things more exciting. I went through a lot too because I wasn't too careful back then with how I handled electronics. Sorry for my long reply. Whenever I talk about what I like and my past, I type a lot. All the time.
I would say the second best album ever. I've always been partial to Ride the Lightning. I love all 8 tracks but the first 4 in a row are the best ever.
@@ARandomInternetUser08 if you really want to get a feel for the TRUE sound of this song, find an LP that an original release, not a remastered one. Digital remastering has weakened this song immensely. It pulls all the organic sounds out of the recording. Good record players can be found fairly cheaply, and you can find amps and head units in good condition,.if you look around. Speakers are the killer though, you're going to have to pay a fair bit of money to get things like Bose. I would find a good set on eBay maybe. Last but not least, get a brand new needle for that record player and learn how to handle and install it. I know this sounds like a massive amount of work, but the first time your speakers blow the curtains flat against the wall and the dishes in the kitchen start skittering around in the cupboard, you'll know the true sound of rock and roll, and you'll never be the same.
@@electrocanman I've been getting into old music a lot more lately so I might do just that if I can save up enough money. I have been getting old rock/metal cassettes for now though, along with, obviously, some CDs, since I'm out in public a lot. I did get the remaster of MoP on CD, but I checked the original and remastered versions on a video to test and I honestly didn't notice a difference. I'm guessing it's because they're already digitized, but if not, it might just be the earbuds/headphones I'm using. I definitely want to get into buying records though, because even though I'm only 19 (20 in a few days), I love old technology more than new technology. Luckily I have a record store a few miles away that I can at least find other old records at, but I'd have to get a MoP record online because there's no way on Earth a record like that would last a second in a store. 😅
My first album was Queen. Metallica’s first label Megaforce Records had a studio in the next town over from mine and their reps would show up where teens would hangout and give out tapes of their new bands. We got a demo of Metallica in 84 and never looked back.
Going to turn 38 this year and I feel like this song has always been there, a part of my playlist for decades. The fact that it continues to gain new fans just shows how timeless and meaningful its message is for multiple generations.
This is the best metal album ever devised by humans. Every song. JH says this song can apply to any addictive behavior... any addiction you call MASTER.
Veins that pump with fear -----> Heroin Sucking darkest clear ----> Alcohol Your life burns faster ----> Meth/Speed Chop your breakfast on a mirror -----> Cocaine You promised only lies -----> Gambling
I honestly like this album, but Damage Inc doesn't cut it for me. I still like Metallica (The black album) better because of other songs, but considering that taht one is longer and this one has more percentage of bangers (7/8), yes, you're right.
This whole album is a true work of art, a masterpiece it all just flows together. I remember buying this album when it came out on cassette, I already had Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning. Those 3 albums are what made Metallica the legends they are today. Oh and the guy at the end of the video... OMG LOL!!!
I’m a diehard Metallica fan! They are and always will be my favorite since I was 13 years old. I’m 43 now and all I am say is that I envy these people in these reaction videos because I would love to be hearing them for the first time again and experience that all over again
It puts a smile on my face to see people that’s never heard Metallica or maybe this was their introduction to heavy metal but it makes me smile to see that their really enjoying it. Almost feels like the people that refused to listen to this kind of music suddenly become fans and I love it. It’s like “hey, welcome to the family. As you see, we’re not a bunch of crazy evil violent rotten people. We’re pretty friendly and welcome you with open arms 😁”.
It's amazing to see these folks going through the same emotions as the people 30 years ago. Metallica is much more than just a metal band. they are legends man.
This is probably THE greatest metal song ever. Seeing Metallica perform this song live is like nothing you'll ever experience in your life, I don't care if you gave birth to octuplets, Metallica rules.
Creeping death in an big arena is something else. Hearing thousands and thousands of people chanting DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! ....absolutely bonkers. Luckily they usually do both songs!
I love seeing Stevie Knight, the reluctant metal fan, listening to music outside his usual fare. I've always said for most people you have to ease them into metal, especially the hardcore stuff. This is one reason Metallica has been so successful over the years. They know how to make kick ass music and still appeal to uninitiated fans.
That was so much fun. This is a song I’ve heard hundreds upon hundreds of times including 8X live but because it was through other people that haven’t, it was like I was listening to it the first time again. Also, very enjoyable to see people of all kinds and from all different places enjoying it for the musicianship. Great stuff, thanks for posting!
It's incredible how this music was standard for the time. With all the other thrash, hair, and speed metal bands around, Metallica was one in a sea of incredible metal bands, the Big 4 are a perfect example. Makes me happy to see this song stand the test of time! And a huge thank you to Stranger Things for introducing this song to a whole new generation of people! METALLICA FOREVER!
I remember METALLICA when they came out in the 80s as what they called back then an underground band because of their music. But slowly they came into the light and the public loved them.
Something almost universal among first time listeners to metal, Metallica in particular is the awe over the way the songs are put together. Mainly the long intro that hip/hop and rap fans aren't really used to. Also the tempo changes, especially with Metallica.
That's something I love about Metallica. Their music is like classical music to me... only heavier. It brings up emotions and feelings even without lyrics.
As a wayward city boy with a skateboard and a Walkman in San Francisco in the 80’s, this was the local band. Starting with Kill ‘em All and ending here, the soundtrack to our youth. 35 years ago we were “bad” and “antisocial” for loving this stuff. Glad to see the world has caught up.
Watching people react to music I’ve listened to for close to 35 years and seeing how I felt then is great , battery is the song that makes you want to break things
When I was a fan in my teendom, I remember thinking wow, I wonder what future generations will think of this stuff. It's so RAW. Now, I actually get to see strangers world wide react. I thought I would feel way more embarrassed :) Instead I'm proud. I'm proud of the current generations for choosing to learn from our Music - it said a lot of what we couldn't change (Sincerely, Gen X)
Lmao that's awesome. You turned a square teacher into a metal head

“Every genre of music has bars” no truer words.
Yup, some are just made of metal.
It's a song about Pimps. Nuff said
Master of Puppets resonates to everyone differently.
True Story, rightfully said.

Yep! This song BLEW MY MIND when I heard it for the first time.

I definitely agree. Those songs and musicians that take time to showcase their talents. I don't know if anything right now would hold up to that.
True, you can clearly hear this when songs like this are played on a piano instrumentally and it almost sounds like a classical composition.
Bach was the metalhead of his day.
Metal always gets a bad rap, but when people go into it with an open mind, Tool, Metallica, Rage, etc., they realize it's a bunch of skilled ass musicians taking music to a whole new level.
Rage is criminally underrated in the metal community.
Not to mention the thought behind the lyrics
If anythng should get a bad rap...it's well rap and most of the new shit out today...produced, autotune, can't play instruments worth shit. Cardi B, BTS, Kanye, etc.

@@kadasrichard Rage is pretty good. RATM is meh.
Nail on the head.
lol took me years to figure that out but was hooked on Metallica from the first taste.
This has us chase an imaginary friend, first rush, materials needed to look certain ways while financially not there, whatever it may be, it never has the answer, just a bad ending…
Edit: unless you understand you got a problem, get help and get the fck out. Actually knowing you have the problem is monumental. Still get help and stay with it. That was my BIGGEST fault. I understood and accepted being an addict. Yet kept thinking, I’ll be okay doing this myself. It never worked.
I like it

Hey. It’s Sad but true! 😅
'You can feel the pain..." I love watching newbies discover what many mistakenly describe as "loud noise." That’s so true!! You actually get it.
A very misunderstood and misrepresented form of music demonized by people who have never taken a moment to truly sit down and listen to it. It makes me so happy as well to see people who fell for the lies give it a chance and realize just how wrong they were and come to enjoy this beautiful style of music.
Perfectly said. Even though they were that young, they were very sophisticated with their music.
If Mozart were alive today he'd be in a speed metal band!

Hahahaha he's in the number 1 metal band for decades. He been experienced the gratitude.
Damn right !
I truly hope James Lars and the guys see this video…just to show how timeless their music is and the impact it’s STILL having! Fuck yeah! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Send it to them!

Not long ago Elton John told James that ‘Nothing Else Matters’ was a _perfect_ song and one of the greatest songs ever written. If that’s not a gleaming endorsement of your songwriting ability, I don’t know what is!
Yeah let Lars find a way to make a profit out of it.
It’s hard not to get emotional seeing so many people enjoy this incredible music.
GOLD
THE MOST incredible song about the terrors and destructive process of addiction ever written.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, James Hetfield is the most underrated song writer of the last 40 years. It’s a hill I’ll die on.
I join you on that hill!!
@@lauragraziano5858 you and me both

I’ll die with you on that hill. A couple Indisposable Heroes.

I know the song is good and all, but can we talk about how well and cohesively this is edited. Well done.👍
Yup, especially the outro:
"I'll tell anybody this though bruh, if you're gonna use drugs... just smoke weed."
True. Props for that because I would never have sought out all those singularly 👊
SERIOUSLY well done!
@@dbplaypen Brad & Lex Reactions are great and they do all genres.
Metallica is genuinely a great starting point for people getting into metal. Their old catalogue is still stellar.
The fact that EVERYONE in this reaction can appreciate and get hype during the solo makes me happy.
When you actually sit down and listen to it, not many people can resist the power of some good metal!
And METALLICA is some sick ass metal
Metal is not just a song
These compilations are amazing, seriously - great editing, great people.
Also, if you know anything about James Hetfield’s childhood you’ll understand why he was obsessed with death and the devil like I was
All I listen to now a days is hip hop, but you can’t go wrong with some Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, or Bon Jovi 🫡
If you can play this on guitar, drums or bass - correctly - and I mean actually playing it right, not half assed, then you can say whatever you want. I can play it on guitar and I can tell you that these guys are talented!!! Forget what jealous people say- they don’t deserve to have an opinion.
@@tony3231 Never learned the solo, the damn rythym is exhausting enough
Lars is an innovator. No matter what everyone says, most rock/metal drummers started playing Metallica. Those early Lars fills are legendary.
FACTS
People love to talk shit on Metallica, but that's just because they are among the most impactful bands of all time and people always like to hate whoever is the best.
I know its all opinion, but if you were to have the top names in metal come together and list the best Metal song ever, Master of Puppets would be at the top.
@@outlawgamingrp a lot of people wouldn't say that Metallica is one of the best today
Lars was excellent from Lighting to Justice. Very creative.
In 91 they went a different direction, to their credit and success, and he kinda got lazy after that. Lost his chops
For sure %100
This song about drugs so perfectly signifies what a drug addict truly goes through the tempo and crescendo of the song are absolutely perfect and masterfully done to show the first drug fix and then the come down and then the hunt for the next fix. Absolutely brilliant composition.
One of the best anti drug abuse songs ever!!!!
What were you doing at age 19-20??? Metallica was writing a masterpiece...300 years from now, people will still be blown away by this song!!!!
Can you imagine how much great music there will be. 300 hundreds years later and Metallica, Queen and AC/DC will still be listened to.
Fergus, you sound like me, just a litlle older. popped my concert cherry to Metallica in '94 in San Diego. Summer Shit Tour was awesome
The greatest thing he's heard in a while was released close to 40 years ago.
Metallica is timeless.
I always like watching Lex react to new music. She's a HEADBANGER!
As someone that grew up to this music as a teen in the 80s, it's awesome watching these reactions
"This sounds like music you will play before you whup someone's ass."
Accurate statement, to be honest. 🤘
No, that would be Clutch, "Binge and Purge"
5:27 This guy gets it. They all do. That makes me happy... that people today are still appreciating the craftsmanship and genius writing that went into this and many other songs. As someone who has had experience with this topic before, I'm happy to see people understanding and connecting with this.
Fantastic video Derek. Keep up the great work!
Dude, seriously just a Masterful job blending them all flawlessly, top notch!

RIGHT?!?!? I'm usually yelling at my screen in 8 out of 10 reactions because of comments (wrong info) made from certain rectors....
LOVED this gang reaction...!!!
The actual progression of this song is just perfect when looked at while considering the lyrics meaning
The whole song is a cycle... Fall into crushing mess, recover, crash again, repeat. Even the instrumental aspects alone are a representation of addiction
The guitar intro after the slowdown moves your soul. It is incredible.
Yeah that's when the song really starts to drive you
I've been watching the guys from Lost in Vegas for years.
Lost In Vegas are the best in the game IMO. Also Key of Geebz
Blaxican 🤘🏽
Oh Megadeth is the shit. Love em.
Oh Hell yeah! You sure know how to pick your poison! Dream Theater is just *chef’s kiss* same with Megadeth! 🤘

@@stevenmontoya7275 This is Cliff's last record, that makes it extra special to me.
This was the first CD my parents ever got me with a CD player for Christmas. Hands down one of my favorite bands behind Queen.
My first album was Queen. Metallica’s first label Megaforce Records had a studio in the next town over from mine and their reps would show up where teens would hangout and give out tapes of their new bands. We got a demo of Metallica in 84 and never looked back.

I'm more of a Ride The Lightning guy myself, but MoP is a lot better produced and that helps it out a ton.

Thank You Mr. Brooks for putting together this compilation!
Something almost universal among first time listeners to metal, Metallica in particular is the awe over the way the songs are put together. Mainly the long intro that hip/hop and rap fans aren't really used to. Also the tempo changes, especially with Metallica.
And their transitions!
That's something I love about Metallica. Their music is like classical music to me... only heavier. It brings up emotions and feelings even without lyrics.
don't forget their mastery at switchups
Metallica’s first 4 albums are ridiculously good. Every song is great! Love that 80’s to mid 90’s thrash.
