Newport was pretty good until around late 2006, however in 2007 and 2008 it really went downhill fast as a result of the financial crisis. So many shops closed and became charity shops or were left empty. It's frightening to see how Newport has fallen in the past decade. During the 90s and early 00s it was a nice place to be (the centre that is). So many happy childhood memories.
this is a great blast from the past - Colours was great for the special for best outfits, the glass lift & lower floor for the inshops was wicked (as a child it was exciting). Thank you for sharing.
I remember the old Kingsway. As a kid, I used to love the transporter bridge spanning the central hall although I would have been two when this video was made. In many respects, this Kingsway had more in terms of vibrancy compared to the refurbished Kingsway we see today.
Was thinking about this the other day. That smell of greasy food and smoke filling the whole of kingsway. As a kid I used to love browsing the Argos catalogues in the Argos downstairs past Woolworths.
TransitionDNB I used to buy the best pea shooting sweets from this store. Not sure what they were little round coloured balls. Also wasn't the Argos around there somewhere.?
Friday night chippy tea in vacara’s just off John Frost square then Saturday morning my dad would take me swimming (all about the slide and the wave machine) while mum shopped and we’d have brunch in Mr. Ben’s Bistro opposite Argos at the Dolman end of Kingsway. Happy times, so sad to see Newport as it is now - ruined for the ego of vainglorious councillors.
Wow how the changes to the town in the years Newport was a great town then for shopping and our city has really gone downhill sadly in the years since wildings m and s etc and the Newport centre now gone 😕
Can someone remind me what the record shop in Kingsway was called? We used to come up from Cardiff sometimes on a Saturday. Records and poster shopping then chips and gravy from Ferris before getting the bus back. Great video and sweet 80s memories.
I hated John Frost square. Such a horrible place. No soul. But the in shops of Kingsway epitomised the UK "mall". They should never have been allowed to pulldown the Victorian era frontage that preceded it all.

Strange seeing people walking around calmly and not on mobiles.
People were worth talking too back then, nowadays I'm glad the dull stay fixed on their screen.

Worked in in shops 1970s we called it dark days go in at 7 30 shift ended at 5 30 never seen the light of day very depressed
