I'm so happy for the nurses who were able to work as a circulator right after graduation.
I'm trying to get into the OR. Praying about it 🙏.

While it is amazing to jump right into your chosen specialty, I am old school. Every new grad should put in a year at the bedside. The foundation of knowledge is invaluable, and prepares you for every other unit. It won’t make you a bad nurse, but if you ever change to a new specialty area, you will suffer playing catch up.

I went straight into the OR. then Cardiac. I loved it. I also went to outpatient cardiac, and I am finishing my career as an electrophysiology nurse in the cath lab. Do what you love...dont waste time in areas you are not going to work in.

@@peachqtpi i disagree, bedside will burn out new nurses too quickly, especially now. Thats how you lose baby nurses and make them run away to other facilities if not out of the career entirely

I'm going to be starting in the OR in less than a month and I'm excited to see just a glimpse of what you do. It was reassuring to see the new grad talk about starting out in the OR since that's going to be my same experience as well. I graduated last December.

@@nina1773 I'm still working in the OR, I love it! It's been a huge learning curve, especially because we had to learn how to scrub and circulate. But I am at that point where I can manage my room, even if I haven't done that type of case before. I feel more confident and I know that if I have questions I can just ask others. It's been a little over a year now and I still feel happy to go to work. There are multiple opportunities to switch things up in the OR. You can switch shifts or you can switch specialties. There are tons of choices. I really feel lucky to have started here as a new grad. Other past classmates that work med-surg are already feeling burnt out. I almost feel guilty when they ask me how it's going for me because I have nothing to complain about. There's the typical grouchy nurse and doctor here and there, but nothing you wouldn't encounter at any other job. I highly recommend it.

We had our surgery exam a week or two ago and I’m interested in eventually doing surgery so I’m excited for my surgical rotation. We learned (and it was a test question) that the head person is the nurse in the OR and he or she has all of the doctors orders and knows exactly what to do which will be great for us students when we go in having no idea what to do.

Sometimes I feel so depressed I just wanted an opportunities to practice what I studied for 5 years at the University and with all the scientific knowledge I've acquired. This is going to come out the wrong way but I don’t know how else to say it. To me, only in the OR, nurses actually “look” professional and vital to what their role is. I’m not saying other nurses are not professional. I’m speaking specifically about the “look” here. Maybe it’s the scrub cap, or the specific hospital provided scrubs they have to wear compared to the other nurses throughout the hospital. Whatever it is- OR nurses just look important to me compared to the others.

I’m a nurse and I totally understand you. Even though there are uniforms, some nurses come to work trying to look cute. Sorry, you chose this profession, the patients come first. So hair up or under a cap, no nail polish & trim those fingernails. Years ago our hospital voted on a new uniform color cuz the nurses complained that white made them look fatter. Gimme a break. That’s how patients can easily identify nurses universally. Now they go from one system to the next and they don’t know who’s who because one system uses navy blue and another uses light blue. Instead they have to look at ID badges instead of easily being able to tell which is a nurse.
