- Using a lovely antique oak child's chair, we run through some of the obvious points to look out for when hunting for genuine antique furniture. Our little ebook 'How to make a serious second income buying and selling collectables' can be found here: www.amazon.co.uk/serious-seco...
I'm a collector, too, and always learning. Lovely piece, thank you.
If you really want to impress us ask the camera man to zoom right in on the details you point out, this will educate us more, agree it has some patina.
Hardware, joinery, color, wear, unique markings, AND smell.
Old furniture has a certain smell to it, much different from let's say a piece of furniture that has been in an attic or a dusty room for 50 years.
I agree with you about the nails., because modern manufacturing techniques and materials are much different, even when they try to replicate.
Ciao !
Absolutely - there's nothing like a piece of furniture that wears its history in the colour and patina. Thanks for your comment.
Thank you for an interesting and informative video.
Such a lovely chair! Thanks for sharing with us. I found a Welsh spinning chair at a garage sale for $5 in July. I don't buy much furniture because I don't have room for it. Good luck shopping. I am enjoying the videos that you are posting.
Welsh period chairs are gorgeous - a great find. It would be fascinating to know its history and journey over the pond. Glad your enjoying our latest videos.
I agree. I wish that I could trace it. It's my video #142 if you would like to see it. I still need to do a lot more work cleaning and polishing it. It was in horrible condition when I found it.
Great piece- nice find!
Could be an apprentice test piece
From an old kneighbour, two oak planks, 10" wide with a edge contour looking like is hand cut, black oak but that might just be the grime, The edge is cut with one large and three fine convex shamphers. as I got the planks home and laied them down and looked at them closely, they had been joined with round pegs, the holes aligned. Three sides were shampher cut. I could see one end of the front board was worn down as only two of the small curves were visible. I'm guessing a welsh dresser top ~ 100 years wear, 50 years unused, 50 years as planks , and now me. I plan to re-table it.
You know that, I can't so much as drink a damn glass of water around a midget or a piece of antique furniture.
First define 'antique'.
Over 100 years old.
I made it by myself. I used woodprix woodworking plans for that.
