Okay, so it turns out that there is already a firmware update that fixes the volume issue. Furthermore, the update has (so far) eliminated the crashes I was getting in the music browser too. I wish they wouldn't rush releases, but I guess they wanted to take a bite out of the holiday sales. These 2 fixes alone make a huge improvement in the user experience, making this one of the best budget DAPs on the market IMO.
I use my R1 as a little "gym" device for workout with my edifier ldac headphones while Training. I have it in a Hardcase (to prevent damage in the gym by falling out of the pocket) and the connection is super strong. One hour of ldac/flac 16/44 Playback is about 8 to 10% battery, so it last me about two weeks before recharging. The ui is a little bit stuttery (but i have not the fastet sd in it). What I miss is a list only Album search (without the Cover Art) that would be much faster than scrolling Album Art while loading. Maybe this comes in a future Update. Nice device, I can let my phone alone and Focus on the workout. Perfect for me ❤😅
Can I use Spotify on this and how will I get data for listening to music on the go when I don't have my phone if you say that it requires hotspot or wifi to use on the go then I'll not buy it
The update 1.1 is already available. It resolves the volume issue and some other bugs. This is my very first DAP, so I'm learning a lot of new things. I like that I'm able to transfer audio files from my smartphone to the R1 via Wifi. I'm very happy with this device, but I'm still on the hunt for a good set of neutral IEM that could make a good pair to this Hiby R1. Any recommendations?
R1 is easier to navigate, especially if you have big fingers. Audibly, there's not much difference in audio quality but the Shanling is a touch warmer.
@PrimeAudioReviews thanks, good information. Probably the warmness I wouldn't need as my iem are already warmisch. So it would maybe be too much. I like of the r1 the tidal as I am a subscriber
Can this receive audio over Bluetooth? been looking at something like this for use in my car, since my car's AUX input is in a very awkward place (in the bottom of the center console) and my phone unfortunately lacks 1 3.5mm jack in the first place.
@PrimeAudioReviews haha yeah I had the r3 pro saber and the R2. MSEB is my most favorite thing in the Hiby os, besides the Hiby connect thing. And yeah using a dongle with a dap makes no sense, but I've seen a lot of people doing this lol.
Yeah, I always use USD in my reviews. I'm trying to get into the habit of saying USD because I know it can be misleading. It's still good value for $130 AUD though.
Even the final iPod Classic had better album art loading and retention than this thing, and it was manufactured 17 years ago for fuck's sake... Typical Chinese junk, really. Almost two decades later and they still can't muster up the mainboard manufacturing or firmware coding prowess to rival an iPod Classic 6th Gen v2 from 2007. My iPod Nano 6th Gen from 2010 has less scroll jankiness than this thing, and the board on that thing is only twice the size of my fucken thumbnail.
Why doesn't anyone sell such a small dap that can run android and therefore install Spotify and utilise its offline downloads function? All I see are the overpriced/expensive Sony now 306 or the bulky Hiby m300....any other suggestions people?
@versacepapi350 so clearly you don't bother watching these videos about daps where the reviewers confirm the rationale for needing a dap plus your phone (size, sound, buttons, heat issues etc etc). Why even bother commenting on something you don't even believe in? Go find somewhere else to polish your ego in silence
@ I’m really just trying to imagine buying any specialized audio device to play _MP3s_ The rationale for a DAP is that you own a bunch of FLACs and want to be able to listen to them on-the-go through a decent DAC/amp. But stay salty
Android requires faster modern cpu. Otherwise it'll be a horrible slow n sluggish user experience. Faster cpu eat through battery so a small and slim device is not doable. Unless you settle for battery life of 3 hour or less.
Deal breakers: No memory of previously volume, low output, frequent crashes, and slow implementation of ui Basically a horrible UI implementation. Why would anyone waste any money on a rush to market insufficient and inept player. You should have in interview simply said, can't recommend at any price with all the problems.
There is an update (1.1) that resolves a lot of bugs. I just had it delivered to me a couple days a go and updated it right away, so I don't have the experience of the 1.0 version. I haven't found anything that I dislike about this device.

I really like the compact size, and the power output is good enough to drive most IEMs.
Yes, indeed, it is!

Are you able to adjust volume and skip tracks with the screen off? That seems to be a problem with a lot of DAPs and is a deal breaker for me.
Yes you can.
@PrimeAudioReviews Great, thank you!
Can I use Spotify on this and how will I get data for listening to music on the go when I don't have my phone if you say that it requires hotspot or wifi to use on the go then I'll not buy it
You can load music (2TB) on a MicroSD card. For Spotify you need phone with data or WiFi.
Wow! It's the size of the Samsung Moment.

You could check out the HZSOUND White Snow.
Simgot ew200
Kinda wish it ran android but cool little device.
How does it compare with the Sanling m0 pro?
This I need to know

bro can i ask that where to download music ?
Bandcamp
I'm looking to replace my 6th Gen iPod Classic. Does this player do Custom Playlist?
Yeah, all the decent ones do nowadays.
Can this receive audio over Bluetooth? been looking at something like this for use in my car, since my car's AUX input is in a very awkward place (in the bottom of the center console) and my phone unfortunately lacks 1 3.5mm jack in the first place.
Yes, it can using HiBy Link.
@PrimeAudioReviews Awesome, thank you.
relatively new to the hobby, how can I listen to this with 4.4mm iems? Can I use my btr15 or that's not something you do
You could buy a 4.4mm female to 3.5mm male adapter or a replacement cable.
Another day, another nugget. I'm not complaining
With its size, battery life, buttons it could be a great Bluetooth receiver.
Yeah, that's a good idea.
SO the volume lock is cuz its a chinese and eu safety law where daps or other electronic stuff cant have above 50+ volume
Yep, something like that.
I only use a ja11 dongle for my Explorer and that seems to be enough. I think any Fiio dongle with peq would be a nice pairing with this tiny dap.
You haven't tried MSEB yet! Also, using a dongle DAC with a DAP (which has a DAC) is kinda crazy.
@PrimeAudioReviews haha yeah I had the r3 pro saber and the R2. MSEB is my most favorite thing in the Hiby os, besides the Hiby connect thing. And yeah using a dongle with a dap makes no sense, but I've seen a lot of people doing this lol.
Comment for da algorithm

Does it do gapless. Important for prog and jazz.
It accepts 2 tb cards, but does the library still have the 10 000 song limitation?
Cheers
Yes, it does gapless. I'm not sure about the song limit.

If only there were a device that everyone carried around in their pocket that had this functionality 🤔🤔

Nothing wrong with 128bps mp3 if you're deaf

This is true. I will pin a comment regarding the update.
What if you change the volume with Bluetooth earbuds
What about it?
