I know some people get really bothered by painted furniture but, for all we know, painting this purple might have been what kept it out of a landfill at some point in its life and available for us to appreciate now 😊

I enjoy the variety of talking and shop sounds. Ignore the haters and critic's opinions.
Also, in my case anyway, a layer of paint can help shield against kittens sharp claws. There are so many reasons for pieces to be painted and as you said, a lot of those reasons can help a piece survive so it can one day be restored to it's natural beauty.

Cant disagree with you!!! This is more or less what I told my 90y.o. Carpenter of a father when he was complaining about my painting a 3 tiers Louis Philippe walnut buffet. It’s either paint or fire…I choose to keep it by painting it!
I’m impressed by this piece’s grain continuous line through the length of the drawers. It’s lovely.
I think I'm in love. The grain pattern on the drawers is simply exquisite. Such a beauty. I don't know how anyone could give off about you speaking Barry. I've said it so many times but your lovely soft voice calms my head right down. I suffer terribly from anxiety and some days my head is in absolute turmoil but both yourself and Dashner always manage to ease things for me. If you narrated an audio book I'd absolutely buy it.

I agree and I LOVE wood, but there are some pieces of furniture that are so terribly beat up and stained beyond fixing that paint is the only thing keeping them out of the land fill. It's an act of mercy to paint them.

I have acquired many old pieces of furniture over my lifetime. They are mostly walnut or oak. I always appreciate when a piece has a nice wood grain, like the piece you just restored. It turned out beautifully, with your hard work. I can't wait to see your next piece.

Painting furniture shows lack of imagination or dedication in revealing the natural beauty in wood.
Anyone can slap a coat of paint on but it takes dedication and true skill to bring something back to it's original state.

I love your silent videos when the characteristics of the piece and the sounds if the shop provide the context. I love the videos where you narrate, both when it's just your process and when you dive into history. Variety is the spice of life. Thank you for all you share with us.

I fell into the "it depends" category on painting. The red crayon on the drawer side makes me wonder if this was painted for a child's room, in which case the exuberant purple was probably a wonderful choice of color. Like others, I want to add that I enjoy whatever format you choose for an individual video. The storytelling videos are unique to the community and always amazingly sensitive; sometimes just ambient sound is wonderful. I have to imagine explaining for each project the process of sanding with increasingly finer grits (for example) can become tedious. Please just keep sharing content, and we'll keep appreciating it.

Upon seeing that gorgeous continuum of wood grain pattern on the drawer fronts, I was immediately horrified by whatever thinking was behind painting that piece PURPLE! What kind of stretch leads to that? Boggling, to say the least. Once again, beautiful work, my man! stunning piece!
Edit: Oh, and Barry: don't worry about the voice-overs-- most of us love it. There are haters (or dislikers?) for pretty much everything. They don't outnumber us sane folk...

Maybe for a child's room, or it was painted in times when such colours were considered exciting and included in their homes, instead of bland white, grey, black, pine, teak etc. Chests of drawers like this were everywhere and easily and cheaply available second hand. Not everyone likes the look of wood, I only enjoy dark wood. Light and mid tone wood does nothing for me.
It's important to always wear a proper mask when scraping and sanding, please look after your lungs.
Thank you. It’s mind boggling how people are mystified by why someone would paint furniture when the answer is quite simple and common sense. They were simply trying to make the furniture match their decor instead of throwing it out and buying a new one. Wood furniture is easily painted and repainted but can also be restored. Its versatility makes it last a lifetime and then some. No one has to throw wooden furniture away.
I mean my first thought when I saw the color was a kids room, either bedroom or a playroom for storage. it isn't a stretch to paint something a bright purple if it matches the room or is a kids favorite color.

The grain pattern on the drawers is quite the eye-catcher. It should sell easily in your new shop in Atomic Antiques. I'd love to see updates every so often of what's going on at Atomic A. When you sell some and add new pieces, it would be interesting to see what the market is like right now. Kudos on another dresser rescue. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, wood grain is gorgeous! It just speaks to me, “ look how I grew,” look how I shine and glow”. The History of a tree is seen in the pattern of the timber. Beautiful job on this piece. I too love watching your videos. Sometimes I like paint on a piece. Sometimes I prefer the natural look - especially when it looks like this. The original hardwood floors on my home were covered with wall to wall carpeting for over 60 years. When I uncovered them, they were gorgeous! The wall to wall probably saved them and kept them in such great condition.

Hi Barry ! Great job on turning a pop hit back into a classic. This chest is definitely Mid Century Modern. What a lot of people don't understand is the many varieties that fall under the huge umbrella of the term MCM. Post WWII was a huge renaissance for the decorative arts that also had the need to produced rather quickly. As a result, designers around the world were all clamoring to create a fresh new look different than what was existing before the war. There was the better known Danish style, but there were lesser known styles such as the Atomic style, the Brutalist style, and even the latter-on Mediterranean style falls under this blanket term. All very different but all very MCM. Thanks for the tip on Rubio Monocoat....have to try it out on my next stripping.

I like Kleen strip and Jasco. Given a choice I don’t typically choose pieces that need stripping. If I do, I start with a scraper as stripper is expensive and messy. You always share good info so talk away. Your pieces are always exceptional and truly highlight the design of the dresser. Keep up the beautiful work.

Beautiful. Perhaps there's no historical connection to this piece but there's definitely a story of some sort that lead to such a dramatic change from natural to purple. And now, with your restoration you're a part of that story too.
