The fact that you have to change thermal paste after 1-2 years says it all. The ps4 even lasted 8 years until it turned into vacuum cleaner simulator. Had my first overheating shutdown and barely owned the series x since Christmas.
There are other factors at play. Viscosity is a huge one. MX-6 so far after a full year of use has been solid. Whereas kryonaught would pump out (essentially oozing itself out from between the chip and heatsink) after a few months. The PS4's fans were taking other temps into play. My original launch day PS4 was loud even after putting good paste on it. It wasn't until after I changed out the Memory Thermal Pads that the peak noise was significantly reduced. Then look at the PS3 Original models. There are loads more Thermal Pads which leach out oily substance after years of degradation. One of my original 60GB models would progressively get louder and wouldn't get quieter even at the XMB. It wasn't until I popped off the Heat Spreader on the RSX and changed that out with MX-6 that the Fans remained quiet and would slow down when the load was reduced. All in all, Gaming machines and PCs, even handhelds, all need maintenance at some point. I am curious to see how long Liquid Metal lasts on the PS5. Will we see cases where an unopened PS5 that is regularly dusted has dried out Liquid Metal?
I’ve owned 6 consoles in my life, I’ve never had take one apart to fix it till the Xbox series X, huge bummer and even more of a reason to switch to PC gaming
Don’t switch to PC every time a fucking game comes out you got a rework everything you’ve installed in it or at least change specs every time you want to change games. just switch systems. It’s all you gotta do. There’s a lot to choose from. Multiple companies. Don’t become a steam queen.
3:08 shows the reason why THAT unit is overheating. The thermal paste is spread way way out of the area and is covering the surrounding circuitry. Either tensioning was uneven at assembly or the holder was over tightened. You can definitely see it's a terrible application! Thermal paste requires precision but if applied "correctly" easily lasts a decade before any issues arise. You don't know what you are doing.
7:04 - 7:50 He spreads the thermal paste AROUND the edge of the cpu dye like he is icing a cake and also on the heatsink for some reason where there is no cpu dye their. He says don't put too much on yet he puts way too much. I wonder what his interpretation of "too much thermal paste" is lol. Also that is the worst cpu pattern for your cpu (proven by this short th-cam.com/users/shorts96GnOB1iZQI) you can do although, it probably wouldn't matter as the shockingly massive amount of thermal paste he used anyways. He has been doing it for 14-15 years (as he said) as well so would expect better. Oh well it works for now for him and he will probably have a major thermal paste issue when he needs to replace the thermal paste again as the cpu will be more dried thermal paste than cpu. Dried thermal paste will also be covering the resistors around the dye so trying to pick it off may take a resistor with it. He's probably still better than most "professional" console repair services but still, not great I agree.
Set to energy saver and disable automatic updates. Trying to play any of the high resource games while the system updates games in the background will Chernobyl your console. If your console keeps throwing the ventilation error randomly check your queue and pause or clear it. All I have seen are videos telling people to open up their consoles or send them to Microsoft for repair.
@josh-o8t I did find that the power outlet on the other side of the wall was on the same circuit, so an appliance in the other room was drawing enough power to rob my Xbox of juice. I moved the offender to a different outlet and I haven't had anymore overheating problems.
@josh-o8t Have you resolved your issue? I know I was super pissed until I figure it out. It feels like a lot of us paid the extra money to acquire on of these new consoles during the shortage and that makes any bugaboos even more painful.
My Xbox did this a few hours ago I’ve had issues with overheating recently with the Xbox constantly kicking me from games after about 5 or 10 minutes of playing, so I gave the console a blast with a can of compressed air and it was back to working fine again, but yeah a few hours ago it shut itself off completely no warning nothing. I thought it had packed up completely, but after an about 5 minutes I switched it back on and the message from ur thumbnail was the first thing shown. I pressed on the controller and it took me to the main screen but my account wasn’t active and the Xbox wasn’t connected to the internet, so I pressed on the controller again and it let me select my account and it also connected me back to internet and everything seems fine, but I switched it back off to going to leave it for a while. I’m buying a hard drive next week and I’m going to transfer all my games to it and see how things go with the console. I have a year left on my guarantee, and if it continues I’m going to take it back to the store I got it from and exchange it for another Xbox series x.
I have been repairing electronics and computers professionally for over 10 years. I disagree with your point on thermal paste. Also ArticSilver 5 doesn’t age well, I stopped using that junk years ago. You don’t have to apply any onto the heatsink at all. I have repasted thousands of devices, I learned from my trials and errors. When doing direct die paste applications, it is essential that every single part of the die is covered, if it is a IHS you can simply put a dot in the center and it is more than good enough. Another trick I learned is to use Electric Contact cleaner to remove old paste from heat sinks and chips. Alcohol isn’t as strong, where as contact cleaner will make the parts look as if you never applied paste before. I believe this gives the new paste more gaps to fill and prevents contaminating the new paste with remnants of the old paste.
@@MorneSteenberg-t3q MX-6 has been rock solid with every machine I have applied it to. Haven't noticed a decrease in performance like I usually do with Thermal Grizzly.

8:30 WAY too much thermal paste! And you don't use a spudger. You apply from the thermal syringe nozzle like they do in factory production. You have no idea.
What about if it doesn’t give you an error you shut it off for her for a couple minutes because she had to go do chores. You come back you push the power button. It chimes light comes on. Nothing pops up on your TV and the light goes out and it keeps doing that constantly. It will not turn on completely.
When I select 'Turn Off' using the controller after using the console for a while I see a green screen and then the controller loses sync and the light on the controller starts flashing. I cannot then turn the console on again using the controller and have to turn it on using the power button on the console. Any thoughts? I don't have the problem when the console has only been on for a few mins and no games have been played. Do you think this could be an overheating issue too?
