When disassembling I marked which one connects where on the motor and then connected them the same way. In reality, if you swap them, the motor will rotate in the opposite direction to the direction switch. Nothing will be damaged.

So both wires going from the trigger switch to the motor are white? So which one is the neutral and which is the live one?

Since the battery was old, I recycled it by replacing all the cells inside with new ones. Nickel-cadmium 2500ma as far as I remember.
