  • A group of high-level early employees who had glimpsed the fluidity and power of the technology behind ChatGPT left OpenAI to start a new company. Their exit sparked concerns that OpenAI is not prioritizing safety. Meanwhile, the success of ChatGPT drove a craze within the tech industry but also added fuel to existing apocalyptic fears. In this episode, reporter Ellen Huet examines the frenzy around AI, both its utopic dreams and visions of impending doom.
Episode three of Foundering: The OpenAI Story examines the frenzy around AI, both its utopian dreams and its visions of impending doom. Some people in the AI industry believe that an all-powerful computer intelligence would be good for humanity. Sam Altman describes a future in which AI ushers in a world of abundance. But others fear that advanced AI could spell catastrophe.
Both beliefs have powerful psychological effects on their adherents. When the consequences are on a galactic scale, everything else seems less important. And some experts argue that this extreme rhetoric is actually a dangerous distraction from the harms that AI is perpetuating today.
This episode is the first in a two-part story; the second half continues in episode four of Foundering.
The biggest story in tech is artificial intelligence, and the biggest story in AI is OpenAI. The company’s rapid progress and blazingly popular consumer products like ChatGPT have pushed tech giants to dump billions of dollars into an AI arms race. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has been dogged by persistent allegations of being manipulative, deceitful, and power hungry - even to the point of being fired by his own board. This season of Foundering takes listeners straight to the heart of the AI explosion: feuds, betrayals, billionaires, and the extinction of humanity…. maybe?

I think the fact that Annie is homeless and Sam a billionaire shows how much fate is in your own hands, they both had immense advantages but ended in totally different situations.

Imagine worrying about racial bias when 8 billion lives are at stake. These women are insane

Firstly, racial bias in machine learning and AI is a real issue, especially when these technologies are in the hands of of police forces. People's lives being affected by this is something that is happening now. There is not much evidence that 8 billion lives are at stake - this is all speculation. Secondly, to the extent that long-term existential risks will be a problem, the best way to get a handle on them is to better understand the risks that we know about. That way we can use evidence to get a deeper understanding of AI risk overall.

A dear friend now spends hours a day with Mid journey making art. Then I learned recently that people with ADHD always need something new. Check. We both are like that, but one way to help it is to travel to different places which is an old fashioned way to help treat ADHD. So we in the USA are a country that lives on hype in an an addictive society and now we add AI which just intensifies these things and I agree whatever is wrong needs to be dealt with now in microcosm. Let’s not wait. I just saw John Oliver make the point that the projected sea floor mining of rare elements to power chips and batteries will be an ecological disaster. And the massive power needs of AI in gigantic data centers will push our power needs to the limit.

Ai is more advanced than we think, the public Ai isn't anything when compared with the top secret ones. The government didn't bat an eye lash when these public Ai showed up, because they have the top of the line.
