135HP Mercury Black Max Trim Motor Replacement - '87 Stratos 179v. AND Bleed Down Problem FIXED!

  • I finally took on this project after putting it off for a couple years. Mostly because I was having a hard time finding the kind of info to help me do it confidently.
I ordered the motor from a seller on ebay after taking out the old one the week before and seeing what it really looked like. I tried to clean it up and make it work better but it only made a slight improvement so I decided to look for one and found one that looked similar.
If you need this motor search for "Tilt trim motor for Mercury Pump 3 Wire 3 Ram; 430-22012. It was priced at $214.77 in late April 2022.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that the motor stopped bleeding down with the new motor as well!
Hopefully this video helps you out.
    Thanks for watching.

Hi, how are you? I hope you're doing well. I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the video you made. It saved me a lot of money. I was desperate and couldn't find the problem. There's only one video on TH-cam and it's yours. I just wanted to thank you and may God bless you. People like you are the creators of motivation. Greetings from Chicago, my intelligent friend.

This is for a 2 wire motor. Mine has 3 wire. Blue , Green and Black. Also does not have quick disconnect bullet connectors but eye type connectors on blue ,green & black. I think this video is the same process just different number of wires and quick disconnect. Also the relays are located between the v cylinders on back of motor. Thanks for the video. It is absolutely what I have been looking for. You might mention that if stuck at boat ramp and motor won't go up that by releasing pressure that you showed, is the way to get home without dragging the lower unit skeg on the pavement. THANKS AGAIN from a Viet Nam Veteran.

Excellent video it's really helped me a lot I was attempting to replace my trim motor on a 200 horse Mercury basically the same setup and had no idea how to do it I struggled for a while and gave up until I found your video at some point I'm going to attempt to do it again and I'm sure I can now because there's no way to get to that back screw unless you're moving that bracket just have to figure out how I'm going to tie the motor up thank you for the info and your video great job

Thank you! Glad I could help. Good luck. If you can't tie it up you could always prop it with a V notched board or something with a jack. Just to help it a little. It pretty much stays put but better safe than sorry is all.

Definitely needed to see this! Swapping the same pump on mine, just only question is where did you connect the red wire with the fuse that’s bundled with the green/white and blue/white?

    • @thehandyhomeowner9781
      @thehandyhomeowner9781  2 ปีที่แล้ว

The red wire went to the starter solenoid. Look for the wires going to the starter. Big wires and one should be marked red. I hope i didn't skip showing that part. That's kinda critical information. .

Alex, did you figure out where the red wire goes? I think I have the same set up you do, the small red wire coming from the control box. Let me know!

I’m curious where you bought your trim motor and if you remember the brand of it? Thank you!
I had to replace my trim motor and bought one from Amazon and one of the bolt flanges was broken off and the replacement motor burned up as I was working the air out of the pump and filling with fluid. I believe I paid a hundred and something for it.

Great video.. I have ordered my motor from Amazon. I paid 183.00 for it. I miss ordered the 1st one but was able to cancel it in time when I seen I have a 3 wire.. Still hoping now it's the same motor as yours.
I got lucky and found your video relatively quick and didn't have to scour the web. I think you made a very straight informational video. I did see where someone ask about marine caulking bolts and side piece back.. I was thinking the same. No biggie though to still do it.
I want to thank you for a great step by step video. Especially doing the work yourself and filming it all. I've watched it enough times now that I have it down pat... Thanks again..
