    This is one of the best videos on this topic I have seen to date. Thank you for presenting all the necessary information so clearly and also pointing out the key safety concerns. The only reason I, or others, may need to watch any additional videos is because I am also replacing the end bearings. Although that was not specifically covered in this video, I am handy enough to figure it out. There may be others who would appreciate if you expanded this video to include the replacement of the end bearings (and maybe zoomed in on properly placing the center bearing). Overall this is by far my favorite video on this topic.

    As an above average DIYer with skills enough to hire myself out for any number of home repairs and improvements (100% TH-cam educated in all areas of skill I possess) I can say this is hands down the best instructional video I have ever watched. Kudos and thanks for the lesson!

    Tom, you took the mystery out of replacing the torsion springs. I am 70 yrs old and live on SS, so any work I can do myself really helps out. I had a co-worker many years ago badly damage his arm when he attempted to replace the springs, so, I was hesitant about taking this job on. But with the correct tools and instruction, I am confident I can do the job myself. Thanks.

      People who thumbs downed it probably got ripped off by this scam company. Don't buy parts from them. LONG shipping, they don't ship your entire order, and once you've purchased, they block you on the "sales" number (which is just an 877 number forwarded to "Johnny's" cell phone in Georgia).

    This is my first comment at TH-cam as I really want to thank. Just finished spring replacement following this instruction. I watched several video for the replacement and none of them explains and notes about safety like this one. This really made the job easy and safe. I had door balance problem after ~30 quarter turn and had to mail for asking what to do around 11pm and got email answer at 12:30am!!! Incredible customer service and fast shipping. Can't be better!

    OK first I want to say is that this video is priceless!!!!! I purchased the new springs from you all, watched this video stopping it as I went and as other people have stated, you have a customer for life. Thank you for this service, you saved me a bunch of money. Now the last thing I want to comment on is the number of thumbs down is ridiculous, probably from your competitors and others who are jealous that just want to hate and hate unjustified. I just installed the new springs. They went on easily since I had already finished all the prep work. The garage door opener does not struggle to open/close the door thanks to the great video you have showing me how to balance the doors..
    Next I am installing your insulation kit on my doors. I hope that will make a big difference on the Florida sun radiating through the doors into the garage and reducing the noise I hear through the doors.

      I love the door insulation. Easy to do but since my doors have hurricane reinforcement bars on them I had to remove and reinstall them. The doors are now insulated but and they are something I did not expect, they are quiet when in use. The insulation baffles the movement and vibration when the doors go up and down. I am glad I did this project.

    had a spring blow out last night. Watched this and saved myself a couple hundred bucks, EASY, in labor. Thanks for the great video! Took longer to drive across town to get the parts than it did to install them. Take your time and follow these directions and you'll be set. Nice work. Just as an FYI I bought 1/2" round bar at Home Depot and cut it to 18" for the Winding Bars, it was only $5 for the steel. Also, my local shop required me to bring my springs in before they would sell me new ones. That caused me an extra trip... Just an FYI for others.

    Thanks Garage Door Nation for making this sooooo easy. I got the bundle kit I ordered from you all last week and installed them with no problem. I went ahead and did the conversion to a two spring system since the door I replaced the spring on was a high use entry way, which was probably why it failed relatively soon. I wish I had known it was this simple before when my springs broke and I was charged $260! I'm pretty handy and this was a cake job for me, especially after watching your video. It seems a lot more quiet now too!

    Outstanding video! One of my springs snapped yesterday evening (Christmas Eve, and we don't have a chimney so Santa had trouble getting in the house with the garage door not working!) I am fairly handy but understanding basic physics and the energy stored in a coiled spring had me a bit concerned about trying this on my own. After watching your video though, I am confident that I will be able to replace the springs and not injure myself in the process! Thanks for the attention to detail and the safety tips! I'll be placing an order with you this evening!

    One suggestion I'd leave for anyone else attempting this job on your own is to remember both the springs and wheels on the ends have torque and will spin on you as you start the process of taking the bad springs down.

    Great video and good explanation throughout. Made me confident that this was a DIY project. Purchased a kit from Garage Door Nation and it came with all I needed. The included torsion bars were a little longer than ones in the hardware store and made the winding of the springs very easy. The new brackets and center metal bearing that came with the kit made all the difference with the noise when my door was going up and down. Now it's just the hum of the motor.

    Tom,
    Great video....everything I needed to purchase, install and FINALLY have a garage door that works again at a reasonable cost and some investment in time. Start to finish, spot on with everything. I had to order new sensors too for mine so for anyone that has a garage door that will open but not close all the way (i.e., starts closing but stops in various places), check into buying new sensors as a fix prior to a new board or new garage door opener/system. That was another $40 +- (M-Line, Marantec M-4500).
    To those inquiring about price....it looks like the larger the spring, the more it will cost (more material). Buy from this company, they give you everything you need b/c they know what you need (replace each moving part as the others get worn out too).
    All in: $186; new springs (2), pulley's, cables, sensors. Saved hundreds I'm sure and now I know how to fix my garage door and if not, know exactly where to go if I need to again......thanks, really.

      direct241 Thank you for the helpful comment and for choosing Garage Door Nation. Great video. I got a little hung up on the center bearing replacement, trying to the the sleeve on the bearing to extend into the bracket far enough to actually rest on the bracket. Finally, I just did it like you did in the video, and didn't worry about it. I then realized it doesn't need to actually rest on the bracket, because the springs are bolted so there is no contact between the torsion bar and the bracket. So your video even answered a question before I had to send it. Saved a few hundred bucks for maybe an hour's worth of work. Thank you!

      I have an insulated and very, very heavy door, compared with the one in this excellent tutorial. How do I be SURE that my door springs get the right number of winds/rotations?

    • @msnbhalli
      @msnbhalli 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would start with 38 winds and test it by lifting it up. It should stay open 3 to 4 feet above ground without falling back on the ground, if the door lifts up too easily and pulls upward then it means springs have too much rotations. Once you rotate/wind more than 35 then each rotation makes a huge difference, so don't do too many.

    • @BrennanA275
      @BrennanA275 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Herman
      The number of turns is determined by the height of your door. For residential garage doors the formula is roughly four quarter turns per foot, plus a half of wind to maintain tension when the door is fully open. If you have a 7 foot tall door and you wound each spring more than 32 quarter turns generally speaking you have the wrong springs. Most doors have a manufacturer tag located on the side of the sections, with this information you can contact the manufacturer and find out the weight of the door and therefore what specific springs are needed for your exact door. Its important before and after you wind your springs to check the door 4 level.

    Excellent video! Very thorough but succinct in providing information needed without the extra time wasting. The only thing that wasn't completely clear is the placement of the bearing when attaching the two springs together at the center support. I assume it is obvious once I look at it.

    Ordered on Wednesday and it was on my door step by Friday afternoon. I only have ONE good hand and I was able to do it just fine thanks to this video. Also I noticed that the guy I paid $500.00 plus to last time did not make sure the torsion bar was parallel to the end brackets and there was a large bow in the tube just like he said. If you want it done right do it yourself. Highly recommend the kit. Also the center metal bearing is a good upgrade as the old one was plastic.

    I used this video to change my own torsion springs! Very accurate. This video made this easy and reassured me I was able to do the repair myself. Followed each step exactly like they instructed removal and reinstall took me about an hour and a half. Start to finish.

    Really terrific video - thanks. i had to replace a few rotten panels at the bottom as well as the bottom most wood cross support - I was thinking I had to wrestle the spring to keep its tension until I saw the proper way to deal with the spring. Many thanks!

    Thanks for all the good advice. This was a do-able project but definitely had to pay attention to what you were doing. I followed the advice of the video and it all went well. No damage, impalement, amputations, or bodily injuries of any kind. I call that a good day.

    DIY TH-cam videos run the gamut from scary worthless to ones that make an expert out of regular guys like me. Your video is at the very top end of the pack. Excellent video!!! Even though I have replaced plenty of the other kind of springs I had always heard "Never touch a torsion spring, the devil lives in them and all nearby will die" but your video made it very clear and I can now say I can replace torsion springs like a pro!

    I recently had my right tortion spring snap in two. I watched this video and felt confident that I would be able to replace the spring myself. The local garage door tech was charging me $210 to replace each spring. This meant they were charging me $420 for the complete job. What a rip-off!. I ordered both right and left tortion springs along with the wound rods. Everything arrived the next day! By watching this video help me remove and re-install the new spings with ease. Thank you so much for your educational videos!!

    This was an awesome video. I really liked how you gave the anatomy of the garage door. It really helped to understand which parts you were referring to. I really feel like I can safely and correctly replace my torsion springs. I will also turn my garage door to a two-spring system.

    Thanks for the install guide. I was trapped in my garage! People told me to hire someone ($400+) but I followed your steps and it was a sinch for $75. The builders didn't even have the wire on the pulleys, so it's better installed now than it was installed by "pros"
