Wondering how you can re tension your garage door spring? Hopefully this video helps for those that are going to try to tension their springs on their own.
Note: For a double spring, just repeat the tightening process for the second spring.

I would have never thought to tap the end of the spring to stretch it out. Totally makes sense. Glad I watched this.
I can't thank you enough for that key piece of info on tapping the winding rod to expand the spring, I had MAJOR POPPING because i didn't originally do this and I couldn't figure out why, that key step resolved it. THANK YOU!!!
Awesome video very easy to follow instructons, had successfully retensioned my garage door spring, much appreciated.
Great video. No fluff, just direct easy to understand instructions. Thank you.
This is an excellent, totally straight forward video. Thank you so much, my new door rolls like a dream now. 😊
Thank you very much for this video. I have just completed my first garage door spring tension job following your instructions step by step.
This video was extremely helpful. I would recommend releasing tension in the system before replacing a broken door cable. Takes a bit more time to retention everything, but takes risk out from the door twisting or getting off track.
Thanks so much. 4 turns per foot plus 2-worked perfectly for my 8 foot door.
Best instructions I've seen so far on how to and safest way to do it.
Great help; worked just as you describe. Many thanks!
Best video on the subject hands down .. Thank you
Very informative, he explained it thoroughly, without any extras. D
Awesome video thanks for the easy instructions very clear step step instructions . Thankyou
This is a great tutorial. I never knew about tapping the spring to let it stretch out so thanks for that. I had a really bad garage door install on a newly built house house a few years back (two 2-car garages and one 1-car garage. Both 2-car garages had issues from day one and while under warranty the first year, they came out to 'fix it' a few times but on the last call, the tech gave me a full tutorial on how to replace the broken springs and how to tension them like your video (minus the stretching). After the warranty expired and one of the garage doors fell on top of my Land Cruiser (no damage due to Con-ferr roof rack on top), turns out the two tracks had no 'angle-bracket' welded along the length of it for rigidity so they twisted and the wheel shaft pulled out. The other 2-car garage door did have the angle bracket... go figure. In hindsight, I bet they used a non-reinforced door track intended for the single door on my double door. I had to take door panels apart and piece it back together after I welded on new angle brackets I got from scrap pieces at work. I've become an expert door installer homeowner ever since. My hats off to the real pro's who do this for a living and hope nobody ever runs into a builder who has people who don't know what they're doing.
Sure sounds like you’ve been through it at this point unfortunately. However you’re better off for it now and so long as you’re careful I’m sure you’ll be able to fix just about anything with a garage door at this point haha. Thanks for watching and I don’t know everything just yet but that’s the beauty of life, always something to learn and usually good people to pass the information along. Kudos to you! Thanks for watching !
Excellent video. Wish all DIY videos were this succinct, clear, and complete.
Appreciate the feedback
Thank you sir! I ended up replacing my cables after 1 was damaged and it kept coming off track after i put it all together and raised it, but your video showed me why! Thank you!!
This saved the day for me ! Thanks so much!
Outstanding. Nicely done. Thanks!
When I installed my garage door new , I drew a line across the spring with a soap stone. The book said to count the line windings at 7 spiral windings. Works great. 7” x 16” door.
That works as well 👍🏼
Great video and very helpful person on this channel. Thank you.
Appreciate that!
Thank You now I can be the Useful one instead of useless! Great videos.
Excellent video! Thanks! Smart person! Bravo!!!👏👏👏👏👏
Great video, very helpful. Just fixed my garage door.
Perfect instruction. Thank you
Nice work, very good guidance. Thanks
Thank u. Very nice job
Great instructions. Thank you
Great video. Thank you.
Thank you! Was tightening mine in a different order, causing my cables to birds nest. I did in your order and no issues.
Great tutorial.
Thanks for the video! I was using 3/8 extensions to tension the spring, got a bit sketchy at 25 turns so I quit lol. You really need 1ft bars at least. It doesn't quite float at 1/2 height, starts to drop. But the garage door opener can deal with that no problem.
Yes you really should be using the proper tools 😬
Thank You! Great video!
Thank you very much for your clear instructions.
Thank you for your very clear instructions. You helped a stupid man make good. That's all we need, just a little help.
Nice job and thank you!
Great video, thanks for the info. You did a great job explaining everything in detail. 👍🏾💯
Thank you 😊
Great video the explanation was super easy to understand thank you.
Thank you! Super helpful!
Great info! Thank you!!

Thank you so much. this is great
very educative. thank you
Thanks great video!
Thanks your video, it's exllenent
Worked as shown good video
Excellent. Thanks!!!
Thanks I appreciate it really
Thank you for this video. I did this today, quite apprehensive at first, I have to adjust back a bit since the garage door will shoot up. The winding tools are really worth the price.
100%
Awesome! Saved me some $$$
THANK YOU!!!
Hi, very interesting video and Thank you for posting! I got a double very heavy garage door (we are in hurricane zone) which is out of balance because is almost impossible to lift it manuanlly. I follwed your video and I found that I can't rotate the springs any more, they are totaled compressed. What should be the issue here, are the springs damaged, old and need to be replaced?. The whole garage door and lifting system was changed in 2015. Thank you
In this case my advice is to call someone out to be completely honest. It’s worth the couple hundred for the peace of mind. I don’t enjoy those super heavy doors myself 😅
Hi mate great video, for a door with two springs , do you follow the saame concept on both consecutively or just the one side
?
One side at a time but yeah you’re doing the same thing 👍🏻
I wished I’d watched this sooner.I just payed 400 bucks to have someone fix this very same problem on my garage door
400 a little steep but depends where you’re at also 😞
I just got an estimate for $420 for two springs. I purchased the springs for $120 from Amazon and they came with the two rods for tensioning.
Any idea why the end collar for the spring doesn’t move when the bolts are loosened completely? It moves a 1/4 turn, but no more, in either direction. The other side works fine (I have two springs).
Sometimes the bar gets warped a bit when the set screws are over tightened. Hammer and Lube should do the convincing you need. If you’re unsure though you can send me a photo and I can try to see if it’s something else? (: (garagedoorguidance @ yahoo )
My garage torsion spring broke after 18+ years, so I ordered another spring using the SAME SIZE shown on the broken spring. Installed it on my 8ft door which requires 33 to 34 turns. I’m up to around 45 quarter turns and when I lift the door halfway it falls to the floor. I noticed that this new spring did not expand out as far as the previous spring. It’s about 3-eighth inch short of the indentation mark of the old spring. Should I do 33 quarter turns and tap spring to stretch it out to the old spot on the shaft?
Oh boy something must be way off. Can you send me an email for quicker responses ? Garagedoorguidance@yahoo.com
Send me the existing spring size and the one you purchased
If you have two springs (both without tension), do you just do one and then the other? Do you do half the number of turns per spring or should both be 4 quarter turns per foot of door height?
Same amount of turns and yes one at a time.
WARNING - These can be very dangerous, carry on at your own risk
7 ft door, double spring. When retensioning my spring, it’s gets pretty tight around 15 1/4 turns. Kind of wonder if it’s supposed to be this tough. Every video I watched made the moves look super easy almost all the way thru until the end. Thoughts?

This is a dangerous video to follow if your garage has spring tension already on it, and if your garage has two springs. It is very dangerous to loosen the nuts on the springs or lower the spring tension without proper procedure. Loose nuts and 0 spring tension is the condition this guy’s garage starts out in instead explaining the procedure to get there. If you loosen the springs improperly it can cause you serious injury and damage to your home.
I learned this the hard way after trying to follow this video. The screw I was loosening grabbed my wrench and the spring flung it very fast into my wall. This happened while I was trying to get the spring tension down so that I could count the number of turns to tighten the spring, as shown later in this video. After talking with people who know more than me, I learned that he was incorrect when he said “it’s the same if you have 2 springs”.
The damage done includes a crack going up my wall and through the ceiling, as well as a garage door that is crooked, will no longer shut, and needs professional repair.
Don’t be like me… do yourself a favor by hiring a professional instead of listening to this guy.
This video does not show anything to do with loosening the spring tension as the title clearly states it’s how to get your tension back from this state of no tension, I’d NEVER recommend anyone unscrew the set screws without the proper steps. As you stated and as is known by many this can be incredibly dangerous and I’ve met a few guys who have injured themselves by unscrewing the set screws without knowing what they’re doing. All that being said I am glad to hear you are not hurt.
This video makes it look easy to people, whether they know what they are doing or not. I was enticed, but not educated on dangers. Please add a disclaimer about dangers somewhere to prevent new homeowners like me from making mistakes. Thanks!
I’ll make it more visible in future videos and see if I can’t make it more visible to existing videos, thanks for your feedback.
Saved me a bill from overhead door co. Awesome to know now
Glad to help ◡̈
Out of all the video's I've watched this one shows detail not given in others. Examples: Take up bobbin goes directly against bearing, no space. Hitting the spring to one side to compensate for spring expansion/contraction. Where door level should be and more.
I’ve found that the 7/16 socket needs to be a 12 point socket to work on the square head bolts.
This is true, sometimes I can overlook a detail like that sorry!
Gloves and goggles are a must.
Is it the same method on a rear torsion spring garage door?
If yours are in the back things are reversed if I’m not mistaken. ( by that I mean it pushes the opposite way than in my video )
My gagage door on the last foot or two going up pulls up really hard. The opener will not close the door. Help!
Sounds like too much tension or wrong springs, did you change these yourself?
my door goes up a few inches then stops. i checked sensors, springs, and tension cables and they all seem fine. any ideas?
Motor power possibly? Have you tried to lift the door manually to make sure it is in fact easy to do ?
How do you ensure you've got the right torsion spring for your door?
th-cam.com/video/TS2Ks94Nv7c/w-d-xo.htmlsi=n7xhJQwY8Hq3EAb1
So do you turn it the same direction as the coils?
Assuming you put the correct spring on the correct side you’re always winding up
Is this for a left wound torsion spring?
When you say left wound it usually goes on the right side. ( Never understood why they do it that way, but this is a “right” wound spring )
Will rebar work in place of winding bars?
I would only recommend winding bars made for the task to be honest
How many 1/4 turns per foot for a 2 car garage door?
4
Here's an additional step, before beginning pull that classic car out of the garage just in case one of those bars goes flying. lol.
lol not a bad idea
My garage door stays at the mid point, but when i turn on the switch, the door opens or closes too fast. how do i control the speed of the door?
Do you have a Genie accelerator ? Or what type of motor if not ?
You just saved my marriage, I had a 5 minute job replacing the rollers on the door and some how messed it up enough to have to redo the whole thing. Luckily I found this video and it helped me tremendously, thank you!
Should the door be opened or close to release tension on spring before I start
This method is door closed. Springs are fully tensioned at that point. Be very careful when doing anything with the springs as they can seriously hurt you.
I always recommend a professional on something like this
You, sir, may have saved that man's life. Great response... Anybody else may have suggested they are to be open, leaving you to crawl across the door as it lay horizontal. Leave it to the pros
The tension on the spring is hundreds, if not thousands of lbs. Better to pay a pro vs the hospital.
All good but the annoying music
Could not hear voice because of STUPID, ANNOYING MUSIC. Please put music at beginning & end, but NOT while you're talking. Thanks!

Relax
Awesome Video, thank you.
