  • Ontario and Quebec are seeing an increase in the number of patients experiencing an invasive form of group A streptococcus. The illness is common but can be serious when bacteria spreads to the blood or deep tissue and needs to be treated quickly. Dr. Anna Banerji, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist, says that parents should be watching out for a sore throat with a fever and pus, swollen lymph glands, abdominal pain or a headache. Symptoms are more than a typical cold, and people should see a doctor right away.

They could have mentioned what provinces now allow pharmacists to test for streptococcus and prescribe antibiotics without the need to wait days for a doctor appointment.

@Franklin Fleming I know that no one I know has strep, so logic dictates it was not from anyone I had direct contact with. Bacterial infections DON'T make the immune system stronger. You can reinfect yourself with strep within days by failing to sterilize your toothbrush, water bottle, or pillow between day 3 and 7 of antibiotics. Now eat a bigger sack of Richards.

    • @warrensteel9954

@Jess D I've had two strep infections in the 39 years before covid, and I am currently managing my first infection after covid. It's not "invasive," but it's proving more difficult to get rid of than the last two. Too many people take antibiotics for granted and don't realize their days of effectiveness are numbered.
