No you don’t. Just make sure you pine tar the athletic tape up. My z1000 flew out of my hands and broke in half because I didn’t reapply in time
Try friction tape... it's nice and tacky

Doesnt the taper chance thr weight and balance point? I do love the feel, hit better generaly with a taper. Just dont understand the physics.
