  • Batting gloves, pine tar, and grip tapes are annoyingly expensive... so today we're trying to figure out if they're really worth it!

    If you're a barehand no-BG's guy, here are some tips:
    1) get some ROSIN. That will keep your hands dry - sweat is the enemy when it comes to gripping a bat.
    2) on a wood bat, try to get a bat with an unfinished handle - or you can even sand off the finish/paint on the handle/knob.
    3) if you're doing it right, your hands should look pretty ugly with a bunch of calluses.

      I've hit my entire baseball career with no gloves and tar until recently I started to use tar with no gloves. Not a lot of course, don't want sticky hands. Since I've hit this way for a good while I'm not afraid to swing hard even while getting rung up

    • @goodwolf152
      @goodwolf152 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hot tip - PT + rosin is the answer for barehanders. Makes the grip tacky rather than sticky. PT will get slick in high humidity or when combined with sweat. The rosin will absorb all the moisture out of both the air and the PT, and just leave the grip feeling dry and grippy. Also, you can groove the handle with a bottle cap to give it a rougher texture.
      Also, for the hardest of hardcore out there: fine grit traction tape (like what is used on steps and ramps). Strictly for gameday-only use as it will rip through hands and gloves in about 30-40 swings, but if you dull it down with some sandpaper and soften it up with a thick layer of PT, it gives better grip than literally anything else on the market (and bonus, it will pretty much last forever).

    It's about the ability to not grip the bat so tight. If you dont have gloves and or tar, you have to grip the bat tight, which adds tension in the forearms and reduces batspeed. This seems to be the real lesson from pitchers not being allowed to use tack substances as well, as they could throw harder when they didn't have to grip the ball as tightly.

    love the baseball bat bros! if i could ask for one thing - maybe a video about the different terms you use in the reviews? for example, it took me a few views to figure out what you were talking about when you said a bat was "whippy". or hitting a ball toward the hands. or why you'd prefer a stiff bat vs. one that flexes. a great primer video to help us folks who aren't as close to the terminology.

  • @garethbacon9347
    @garethbacon9347 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I guess this comes down to how confident you are in swinging without batting gloves and no grip. People would feel hesitant to swing a bit without any grip so they wouldn't swing as hard as they can. That then causes the bat speed to fall a little bit as people aren't swinging their hardest. Batting gloves, with a grip and pine tar just creates a lot more confidence that the person can hold onto the bat and it won't slip at all which then allows them to swing as hard as they can.

    This seems like a comfort thing to me. I’ve switched back and forth between bg’s and bare hands a couple times in my career and it’s always whatever I’ve been doing more of that feels comfortable. That being said I don’t wear gloves but I wrap all my bats with gamma grips cause I just feel more connected to the bat if that makes sense. It’s also really hard for me to find gloves that fit comfortably which is a big factor I guess.

    I've experimented with tackies and grip substances. I've tried bat tape, 3m spray glue, hairspray, strongman tacky, flexseal, and even plastidip.
    I've noticed that the best setup is actually unfinished wood, tacky/pine tar and batting gloves. If you want better vibration dampening, plastidip is good to dip the handle in, or just get some meat on your hands.
    One thing to help avoid blisters is to apply weightlifting chalk to your bare hands, even inside the glove. It helps grip, absorbs sweat/oils, and skin tugging. Unfinished wood help absorb sweat and oils from your hands and REALLY does well with pine tar.

    What you need to consider is having adequate tar on the left or bottom hand and a much lighter amount on the right or top hand…. Too much on that top hand I find that it restricts movement and EV. The best in my opinion is wood bat and batting gloves, heck with the tape. Also those of you who have not included a 1oz puck handle you are missing out. My AP5 Marucci 33” feels like a 32”…. It is pretty remarkable.

    I don’t think it makes a difference most of the time. It’s a confidence thing. If it’s raining or a really hot day you probably do get a better grip with gloves and pine tar. The size of the handle width makes a big difference. If you have a thicker barrel and small hands it will slip.easier. I got for thinnest handle I can get.

Still, I remember seeing Ted Williams (last player to hit .400) grip the bat bare, his fingers playing the handle like a piano.
