    Summary:
    1. Tomato: The texture of tomatoes can be hit or miss depending on how you store them. If you put them in the fridge, they can become mealy and lose their flavor. Instead, store them on the counter at room temperature for 1-2 days, but keep them out any longer than that and they might go bad.
    2. Melons: Melons normally do best outside the fridge. Once refrigerated, they tend to break down and become powdery and grainy. So to keep the flavour intact, they need to be stored at room temperature. However, after cutting, you should store them in the fridge for three to four days.
    3. Potatoes: Potatoes are a fan favorite because of their versatility, but they should never be placed in the fridge. Cold temperatures can break down the starches in them, changing the taste and texture. For optimal storage, place in a cool, dry space to keep them fresh.
    4. Basil: Basil is a great herb to have around the house. Its unique taste makes for the perfect cooking partner to spice up your kitchen. Just remember: it should be kept at a temperature of at least 40 degrees F.

I have a somewhat unique situation. I live surrounded by corn fields. I have done everything I can to keep field mice from coming into the house, but every time they harvest, plant, fertilize, or even just tilling with their machinery, I get a few mice in my house. Sometimes the 1st indication they've entered is non-refrigerated foods being eaten on. I've learned the best way to stop that is to put everything in plastic or glass containers and place in the fridge. This buys time for the cats to do their job. (And before you say it, all my dishes, pots and pans, etc..., that aren't kept in containers are stored upsidedown so the mice can't get in them.) The price of living in the country. But I wouldn't exchange for city dwelling ever. Been there, done that,...)

@@MrChopsticktech I lived most of my life in the city. Not going to do it again. You can have the cities. Give wide open spaces, stars in the sky, clean breezes, and neighbors with chickens, cows, horses and goats, that come up to the fence line for a quick nibble on a carrot or a rub between the ears. Besides, it's only about 15-20 minutes to the not so small town with a Walmart and grocery stores. I'll pay a little extra in gas and put up with the occasional critter where he doesn't belong. The trade-off is definitely worth it to me.

Well yeah you can and it's still good and safe to use - but it really looses much of that fresh flavor after the first day - I notice that from getting super fresh quality butter. And yeah the secret is to take only small amounts out at a time that you anticipate to use - although that can be a pain or the alternative pain of using hard butter from the fridge....just one of those things.

But it taste no where near as good when it is good and cold. And in my house I have a very small kitchen. So some of those other foods mention like tomatoes, butter, bread, and peanut butter must be kept in the refrigerator. Since I don't have the counter space to keep them on. Nor do I have a pantry to keep them in.

Mostly I refrigerate cause the van can get up to 100F inside during the middle of the day . But in our so-called winter, it can get down to 40F some nights. When I does , I have an electric blanket but don't have enough power to run the fridge and the blanket. I know veggies will be fine overnight at around 50F without a fridge, but how about cured ham and left over deep fried chicken with the skin? cheese? left over pizza?

Thx for the informative video, but I need to correct you there. Tomatos do not belong on any counter at room temperature. That would mean you're storing them at temperatures beyond 18°C in a well-lit room. They are best stored in a cool, dark, and well-ventilated dry place with a temperature not beyond 12° to 16° Celsius. And try to have used them within a week. Have a great weekend!

So many people (this video commentator included) incorrectly warn about fridges having high humidity.
