I always look forward to your live or youtube videos, Karen! You are a natural teacher and I cannot thank you enough for sharing your talent in such an awesome way! No matter the level of pastelist, no matter the kind of pastelist one sees oneself (realist or impressionist...) you offer, by showing and in fun simple terms, what you've perfected for your own art. Your passion and love for your craft radiates with every demo. Thank you, so much, for helping me become a better pastelist!
Great KM!! i love the quick, relatively limited palette demos. Doing paintings this way helps me build CONFIDENCE by giving me a sense of ACCOMPLISHMENT. THANK YOU.
talk about coincidence, Karen. i got a piece of shipping foam the other day and i put it in with my pastels thinking that, since i don't have pipe insulation for blending the underpainting, this might do the trick. then today i watched your video on the "Large Pastel Painting"---which is GREAT as always!--sure enough, you commented on running out of the insulation so you used the white shipping foam instead! HA! i had to laugh! by the way, i SO ENJOY your video instructions and demos! THANK YOU!
Loved this lesson! As a newbie, I have plenty of negative thoughts, and I’m especially appreciative for your reasoning about making an initial quick painting, and about not being afraid to paint large...along with so many other nuggets of wisdom you so graciously share. Thank you. Thank you! Looking forward to more learning and to more of your lessons.
Julie Neuhaus Omgoodness since I saw your picture I haven’t been able to take my eyes off it... please where in this world would a woman like you come from?
This has been so helpful!! I am new to pastel and have wondered why so many paintings are rather small. I like large. And I have a hard time being bold with color although the bright colors are what attracts me to pastel painting. Thanks.so much.
What a fun piece! Thanks for reminding me that going big is actually freeing. I found this to be liberating in watercolor as well, since I am normally a tight painter. Getting your whole body involved in the strokes makes a big difference in the outcome.
You've been reading my mind again!!! Just what I want to inspire me. Thanks again for your generosity. I'm looking forward to braving the larger painting!!!
Lovely picture, this is the first large pastel picture I have seen done here on TH-cam! Most are quite small, so I enjoyed this very much! thanks for sharing your process. I do wonder about the graphite under your pastels have you ever had trouble with your pastels not sticking or the pencil acting as a resist? I have only sketched with pastel pencils, Do you ever use the hard pastels for sketching your beginning stages? Thanks for giving us your time and expertise.
Thank you! I use whatever is handy to start the painting including hard pastels and pastel paintings. I use a light touch with the graphite and never had a problem with pastel sticking to the pencil marks.
Love the impressionistic look, beautiful! Also, I’m just beginning to work with pastels and was wondering about your set up. What is the black support you have your painting taped to while you work?
I love your impressionistic art style! Would you share, how you got the paper stick to the wall in a non destructive way (so it would not be destroyed if you remove it)?
Karen Margulis thx, it was very kind to answer! It must than be something like a double side adhesive tape (I hope, that is the correct term in english), but then, it would show marks if you rub over the parts with pastell, hmmm, maybe you can show your method on one of your next videos :-)
Oh that looked like you had so much fun! Great painting! One question; after do you refine the whole thing or was the end the end ? You know us beginners, we never know when to stop and overwork a painting to death sometimes, thanks for your generosity in giving us great tips!
Thanks for watching. I made a few refining marks after the video. You will be able to see the finished painting at the very end of the video and on my blog later today. But I didn't do much more at all.
Thanks again Karen. I so enjoy learning from you. In one of the post below, you mentioned you use foam core as a backing. The tape doesn't destroy it? I'm also using artist's tape. In the beginning I used foam core, but soon I had ti buy gator board because the tape pulled the paper off the foam core. Does this happen with you?
I don't seem to have that problem with the artists tape and the foam core. I buy cheap foam core at the Dollar Tree and use it for a few paintings and when it gets too beat up I recycle it and use another piece.
Hi Karen. How do you keep the UArt paper from curling, especially when painting? I have the 400. I think that eats up more pastels then the 200? Thanks.
The 400 is not as rough as 200 so you might want to try 600 which is smoother! I use tape hinges on each concern and sometimes on the sides of the paper to keep it flat.
Hi Karen, thank you for this. I’m looking to do a pastel commission painting of 48” in height. How do you protect it for the buyer to hang as not sure about framing such a large piece behind glass? Fixative doesn’t seem to fix completely and darkens the painting. 😳
It is expensive, but the most expensive sanded ones are comparable or less expensive than the best watercolour papers (e.g. Arches), and they are much more difficult to re-use. Quality materials are often handmade, so I guess that is where the cost lies.

Hi Karen, I've kept white packing foam just in case I can use the same way as pipe insulation. Voila! Thanks for sharing. Glad to know it works.
Thank you! Spectacular!!!!

Fabulous
Great!
You’re my inspiration ......love it ❤️
Once again, Karen... Thank you so much!!!! You are truly a gifted teacher as well as an artist!
Thanks for the tips. I see now how it makes sense to buy full sheets, as I've spent so much for pads already. I enjoyed your painting!
Thanks! I appreciate your watching!

Love this. Your tips are so helpful. On the smaller painting, what do you have on rope of the painting to protect it?
Thanks! The smaller painting is just in a temporary frame without glass just for show!
I love your impressionistic art style! Would you share, how you got the paper stick to the wall in a non destructive way (so it would not be destroyed if you remove it)?
I use foam core board as my drawing board and attach the paper with artist tape which removes easily.

I see beauty in just the underpainting. An underpainting, framed on a wall, could look interestingly brilliant. No?
Thank you! I sometimes wonder if I should stop!

Yes you can frame large pastels and you do need to use glass or you can use museum plexiglass to make it lighter.
I love your style Karen, lovely and loose. Only problem was the camera focus was often blurred.
Thanks for watching and thanks for your feedback. I will look into it. Might be time for a new camera!
Cm or inch? Stunning !
Thank you! Inches
I Bought this one!!!!
Yay!!! Thank you very much for giving it a good home!
👍🏼👍🏼❤️❤️❤️
Starting a painting like that would scare me.
Pastel paper is very expensive.
The good ting is that most sanded paper can be washed off and reused if you aren't pleased with your painting! Thanks for watching!!

@@KarenMargulis have you ever tried to wash off pastelmat too? Uart is much pricier here in Europe
@@CoCoComet I haven't tried it yet but I will !!!

That's drawing, not painting.
farsensor operant Uh.... no. When one fills in an entire picture, even with a dry pigment, it is a PAINTING.
