    I TOOK MY PARENTS TO TURKEY AND IT WAS AMAZING! 🇹🇷
    This was our 5th big international trip together, but it’s their first Muslim-majority country. Being Jewish, I knew that it would be an eye-opener for them, and it certainly was.
    We were led by our local Turkish friend, Anil - starting in Istanbul, then heading down South to Antakya, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, and Kilis (on the Syrian border).
    From the mouth-watering cuisine to the ancient historical sites and everything in between - Turkey is just FANTASTIC (seriously, one of my favorite countries in the world) and it was special to experience it alongside my Mom and Dad. I think that this was my favorite trip yet with my parents.
    And most importantly, they now have a different perspective on Muslims and Islamic culture!!! They can fully understand that Jews and Muslims are SO similar, and that’s a beautiful thing :)

    Being Jewish I can certainly understand fear of going to a Muslim country but I absolutely love that you are trying to break down stereotypes and open peoples eyes to acceptance of other cultures in the Middle East and south Eastern Europe. Especially with the release date being 9/11. I feel anti Muslim sentiments are incredibly high, especially among Jews. I sincerely thank you for trying to open the eyes of people as Islamic cultures are so incredibly cool and I’m so grateful I was exposed to such cultures as a Jew and not kept from them like so many others are!

      Of course, Turkey is an islamic country by history and demography. It's just, Ataturk said in ( 1920-30's) "Western world improved so much with secular laws, let's copy it". We did it for the sake of surviving. It was a wise choice because:
      1. While Western countries boasting about "how they made Turks 'western' and defeated their once biggest enemy", we found enough space to breathe. A breath that will enable us to stand up after 100 years (now).
      2. In fact, non-muslims were living in so much better conditions in Ottomans. Imagine, Ottoman was a religion based country, in a world where Christians are winners.
      Yes, Ataturk. Smart man.
      ////////
      After the internet era, (like every country) our culture and religion attacked (example: Netflix.) Nowadays, only one rich guy can spread his ideas thanks to the internet. So atheists thought they are now powerful enough and took advantage of the secularism law.
      Propaganda news says "Erdogan is a dictator!" etc. No. He is not. I have never been abroad but it's safe to say Turkey is really a free country. To the point that sometimes i'm seeing a news and saying "Oh no this couldn't be Turkey". And the speaker says "France", "USA", "Indonesia" etc...
      Last words: There is an internal fight in Turkey about culture and religion but it's none of your concern. Actually, it's better for you 😂 Just take your popcorn and watch it. Either way we are not losing our hospitality anyways.

    It's so great seeing Jews going to a Muslim country!! I am Jewish myself, went to an Orthodox school from 3 years old to 8th grade, and go to Shul (Synagogue) almost every Saturday. At school I meet and make many Muslim friends, I find I connect to them even better than I connect to Christians (even though the general perception is that because I'm Jewish I would stay far away from Muslims). I'm also middle eastern Jewish, my family comes from Halab (Aleppo) and Maser (Egypt), so I see some of the so similar practices we both have, and I even eat the same foods and have the same sort of culture as Muslims (and even both use Arabic, my family uses some, not predominantly, but phrases are said very commonly), so I really see how compatible we are. My family has stories of when they were in the middle east (my family had to leave in the like late 40s early 50s) about everyone buying their meet from the same butchers (Halal and Kosher both have slaughtering rules), and people being friendly and existing together. Shalom Aleichem, Salaam Aleikum ✌

I hate when westerners go to places in south Turkey and think every single one of those people are Turks. The niqab wearing women and the young girls wearing headscarves are not Turkish, they’re Syrian refugees. More Syrians live in some cities there than actual Turks. Istanbul is a great place to visit.... And truly unique in many ways.. Cotton candy skies.. Yummy food.. Fish sandwiches 😍.. And a rich history ... It has the capacity within it to change the way you view the Muslim world forever, especially the way they care for the animals...its definitely a lesson the rest of the world must learn from Turkiye.....It will warm your heart ❤️❤️❤️.. . I'm soo happy you invited them.. 💜🌹👍

      You are telling the truth. Animals can be in hospitals, markets, schools, transportation vehicles in Turkey. During my university years, we used to study in class with cats and dogs. 💕 In fact, this tradition is inherited from our ancestors. During the OTTOMAN Empire, cats and dogs were seen as neighbors. Birdhouses were built on the roofs of government buildings. Animals and women are given great importance in Islam. ❤

      @Adele Avril What kind of ignorant are you? We are currently reading this comment with my cat that I keep at home. I have cats that I feed outside. I also feed the birds. I leave food for the birds by the window. I have cared for and treated several birds and cats that have been sick in my home before. Of course we found them on the street too. I only talked about myself, think again, I did not tell about the goodness of my family and the people around me. There are millions of animal lovers like me and much better in Türkiye. If we see someone harming a living thing, we either punish that person or hand them over to the police. Cats and dogs are always waiting in our butcher, doner and restaurant areas and the shop owners feed them. Even in front of the pharmacy, there is a bowl of food and water. We do this because we love it. We value animals. They are the silent beings of God. It's so ignorant of you to talk without knowing us in general. There are good and bad people in every country in the world. so don't slander our country because of a few unscrupulous people, don't talk in general. We dont kill animals by putting them to sleep after a certain period of time like other countries. We feed them in the shelter and try to adopt them. Turkish people are very warm-blooded, compassionate and hospitable people. Get to know us correctly. Consider the value of animals while guests are very valuable with us.

      @Adele Avril Yabancılara özel ülkeyi kötülemek için ülkenin düşmanıymış ve hiç iyi yönü yokmuş iyi bir barınak yokmuş gibi konuşup genel olarak hepimizi acımasız, merhametsiz gösterirsen buna bok atmak derim. Marketlerin kasap ürünlerini barınaklara gönderdiğini biliyor musun ? Bizim ülke en azından uyutup öldürmüyor. Kötü olan insanlar, kötü barınaklar da var ama buna herkesi katıp söylemezsin. Sen 85 milyonu zan altında bırakıyorsun. Seni ilk yabancı sanıp sonra Türk olduğunu görünce gerçekten şok oldum. Ülkene bu kadar düşman olma. Hâlâ ısrarla daha az sevgisi var diyorsun. Ya yabancı adamlar ülkemize gelip Türkiyede beni şaşırtan şeyler adı altında hayvan sevgisinden bahsediyor. Sende kahvehane tartışmasında olan dayılar gibi her söylediğini doğru kabul eden, genel yorum yapma. Ben o kadar yabancı insanlarla siyaset, kültürel, tarih konuştum bilhassa onların diline çevirdim adamlardan böyle yanıt almadım. Sen nasıl ülkene bu kadar bilenirsin ben gerçekten çok şaşırdım. Hepimiz mi kötüyüz? Bir tek ülkede sen mi akıl hocası, melek kesildin.

    • @johaquila
      @johaquila ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it's relative. The United Kingdom is technically a Christian country because it has a state church and a strong connection between that and the state. Israel is a Jewish country in a similar way. But most Western countries are not like that. They are technically secular. For example you would probably think of my country, Germany as a Christian country. But it is technically secular. The bigger religious denominations can get certain privileges almost as if they were state churches, but these are not exclusive. The Protestant and Catholic churches get these privileges, but also the Jews and some other religions. Islam can get them as well, but progress in this respect is slow. Or consider the US. Technically it is very secular, but in practice it is in many ways a fundamentalist Christian country. As I understand it the situation in Turkey is similar to the one in Germany: Christians theoretically have the same religious rights, but in practice things can get complicated. (Building a new church in Turkey is said to be even harder than building a new mosque in Germany.) It's just a normal thing that happens when the majority of a country has one religion. It can try to be secular, and it's a good thing when it does, but this will never work completely.
      Therefore, when talking about a country's religion, what we usually mean is the religion that most people there have, or at least grew up with.
