  • I believe that whatever your skill level, there are DIY projects you can totally ace! This is one of them: calming lotion bars.
    These elegant and versatile gems are solid bars of moisturizing magic. They look like a fancy bar of soap but when you rub them between your hands, the perfect amount of oil melts into your skin. The best part about them is that they are endlessly customizable, making them perfect for yourself and anyone on your list.
    Materials:
    1 part shea butter (or cocoa butter)
    1 part coconut oil (or other carrier oil)
    1 part beeswax
    Optional: 1% dilution** of Gray Matter Batter or Lavender essential oil (or other essential oils)
    Tools:
    Small heatproof bowl and saucepan
    spatula or spoon
    mold (soap mold, muffin tin, silicone candy/baking mold, etc)
    Instructions:
    1. Measure equal parts shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax. (I like to use the beeswax pellets for easier measuring and melting.)
    2. Combine ingredients in a small heatproof bowl and place on top of a saucepan with an inch or two of water. Heat on the stove at medium-low.
    3. Stir until oils and wax are completely melted and combined. Remove from heat and allow to cool just slightly before adding essential oils, if using. Stir to incorporate.
    4. Working quickly, pour the liquid mixture into your clean molds. Allow them to sit undisturbed until the oils become opaque. Now, either leave them overnight to completely harden, or place them in the fridge for an hour or two to set.
    5. When the bar is set, carefully pop them out of the mold!
    **To dilute essential oils to 1%:
    Use 6 drops per 1 oz

    This was the best lotion bar tutorial that I have seen. Just knowing it’s equal parts and which things you can substitute makes it so useful. So many of the videos use oils or ingredients that are not readily available without ordering online and they don’t tell you that you can substitute something else. Thank you!
    I save candle tins and candle jars that have lids and wash them out specifically to use for homemade bath and body items (not for selling! ) . And also many of the dollar stores carry those tiny little boxes at holiday time, in case anyone doesn’t have a craft store handy and doesn’t want to order online.

      Thank you! Yes, I agree- sometimes folks make these diy’s a little harder than they need to be.
      That’s a great tip about the re-used tins and jars and where to find the little boxes! Thank you for sharing.

    great tutorial, Elise! I was hoping to find a lotion bar recipe with Shea - I've only made lotion bars once but didn't care for the recipe much, and they were greasy. I just recently watched your body butter tutorial and that got me to wondering just now if the arrowroot could also be added to the lotion bar - or would it not be needed? I'm curious what your thoughts are. I'm definitely going to make these for my next trip! Thanks so much for sharing and all your awesome tutorials! :)

      Thank YOU so much for all your wonderful comments and questions! I’ve loved chatting with you.
      And yes! I think this is a great idea and I think adding a little arrowroot powder will help cut down on the greasy feeling. I haven’t done it myself, but I see many other makers recommending it in their lotion bar recipes. It would be well worth trying!

      Thanks so much Elise (hope I'm spelling your name right?) I just wasn't quite sure if it would work the same in lotion bars, or if the lotion bar would still work.
      Don't want to take up too much of your time.. as you see, I've been binge watching your videos.. lol.. love your tutorials. :)

    Hello, do you think which packaging would be safe to ship in warm climate country? So it won't melt and safe. Thank you for the nice video btw

    • @TheCrunchyGinger
      @TheCrunchyGinger  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! When I ship these, I usually wrap them tightly in parchment paper and put them in a little container or box or baggie. I haven’t had any trouble with them melting in transit in the summer. Since they are so beeswax heavy, they tend to hold their shape well.

    Do you have tips for easy cleanup after making lotion bars? Most tutorials leave this part out. I tried making lotion from a recipe that uses a quisinart and it was a nightmare trying to clean it afterwards bc the ingredients cooled so quickly. Lotion bars are simpler but there’s still cleanup and I wonder what works best for you?

    • @TheCrunchyGinger
      @TheCrunchyGinger  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is such a great question. You’re right that the beeswax especially cools quickly and can make a mess. I start by wiping the bowl and spatula I used with a paper towel or piece of newspaper to remove the extra lotion while it’s still warm. Then I pour the hot water from my double boiler over them to melt off what’s left. Follow up with hot water and soap and it’s usually all clean! For the molds I use for the bars, I run (or soak) them under very hot water first to melt the residue and then use soap. I hope that helps!

    Great informative tutorial video with details. Will be making some soon. But, question - in equal parts, different butters can be combined? For example in 2 ounce of butter, it can be a combination of shea butter + mango butter + coco butter?

    • @TheCrunchyGinger
      @TheCrunchyGinger  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! That should work! Sometimes I like to do half Shea and half cocoa butter.

    Can i just put it on a steel box and make it like a balm.

    • @TheCrunchyGinger
      @TheCrunchyGinger  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you could, but it turns pretty solid so it might take a bit of work to warm it up enough to use it out of the tin. I would recommend reducing the amount of beeswax to make it a little softer and more "balm" like.

    SORRY if this sounds ridiculous but do you just rub this on your body? Instead of cream? And rub it in? Anytime? Or is it for after shower use? Sorry if I sound thick!!!

    • @TheCrunchyGinger
      @TheCrunchyGinger  ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol that’s exactly it! You just rub it between your hands (or on your feet, etc) and your body heat melts it just enough for a little to come off on your skin. Yes, it’s like a solid version of body cream which makes it super portable. You can use it anytime!

      @@TheCrunchyGinger thanks..im mortified I even asked....lol

    • @TheCrunchyGinger
      @TheCrunchyGinger  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, not at all! It’s not a thing you usually see sold (except maybe at little handmade shops.) I always explain how to use them when I give them as a gift because folks often assume they are soap bars. I’m glad you asked!

    If I want to use soy wax which is softer than beeswax and I should increase its weight, by roughly how much will you recommend please?

    • @TheCrunchyGinger
      @TheCrunchyGinger  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you would want to increase the ratio of soy wax to achieve the same consistency in the lotion bar. I have not used it myself, but here is a great article with some info about different soy wax ratios that might help! www.humblebeeandme.com/a-quick-guide-to-soy-wax-liquid-oil-ratios/

    Could I use an infused oil for these?

    • @TheCrunchyGinger
      @TheCrunchyGinger  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes!! Yes! Absolutely! I don’t have videos for these recipes, but I have one made with calendula infused oil that is great for very dry hands and feet. And I’m loving a recent version I made with dandelion infused coconut oil and sweet orange oil that is very good for itchy irritated skin.
