Intentionalism... A word that accurately defines a way I've been trying to live my life for the past 7 or 8 years, but have struggled with consistently. I have stumbled into this truth several times before, but due to lack of diligence, have also stumbled away from several times. Intentionalism is when you turn off your autopilot behavior, and drive conscious attention into the very thing that you are currently doing. The power of this practice is immense. I say that because it is the foundation that all other ideas and philosophies require to bear fruit. Even being intentional in menial things, like washing the dishes, really strengthens the muscle of intent. Pay attention to what you're doing. Don't mindlessly wash the dishes, focus on where you're coming from, why you're doing this, and do it well. How you do one thing is how you do everything. Simply by living with intentionalism, you are AUTOMATICALLY living with PURPOSE. And thats beautiful, and something to be grateful for. We all want a purpose. Intentionalism gives you purpose. I'll end with a complimentary piece of wisdom for intentionalism - Which is, live with high intention, but complete detachment. Just focus on the process. Focus on the GAME, not the scoreboard. Let go of the result completely. .. and just be intentional about improving the process, and the results will come as a natural byproduct. Thanks for making this video, I INTENTIONALLY wish anyone reading this all the best :)
Santiago Torres he a total narcissistic egotistical delusional brat who lives of the bank of mum and dad ..he needs a month in prison at least to bring him back down to Earth 🌏
I love and feel proud of the fact that I, even with the extreme amount of abuse and mental growth I've gone through, have always held all these values to heart. This video literally gives me proper words for everything I knew but couldn't explain
He’s either reading a script and acting it out, which is genius writing AND acting. Or He’s speaking off the cuff, which means he’s a great orator. Either way he’s brilliant. Amazing video.
Due to my autism I essentially need to live like this, but I've never quite been able to put it into words like this video does. I'm so glad a friend linked this to me after extensively talking about the things I do, why I do them and why yes, it makes me happy. I'm much more comfortable with minimalism than vice versa. I'll spend weeks, at times months, considering if I really want or need something but then when there's finally a trigger to get it, I'll do it having carefully considered it overtime. Now this sounds like a huge mental clutter, but because having things I don't use (frequently enough) gives me even more stress, as does getting rid of things, so it works out. The rest is just a bonus, such as financially but also the sheer happiness something small, yet extremely useful brings me. It even shows with something as simple as food, I'll treat myself as a garbage bag before I throw stuff out, so it's important I don't purchase what I won't eat. I'm fully aware how stupid it is, but planning out my meals is an easier solution than getting over my dislike for waste. Essentialism has always come natural to me and I've been shamed for it most of my life by those around me, but it's not something I can change. The first time I recall it standing out was when I lost my dad, I 'got over it' extremely fast to a point I was put into counselling. My mind just registered it out of my control and moved on, doesn't mean I didn't love him, that I wouldn't have preferred to be raised by him, to have him in my life, but I couldn't control it. My mind considers these things for a brief moment but can't keep holding onto them unless I go the other extreme and it's all I do (which counselling and my parents pushed me to for a while.) Intentionalism isn't present as much and I'm content with that. However my ability to estimate other people's opinions and values is so poor, it'd take considerably more effort than average to consider them. The mental drain would be too exhausting, so beyond simply following rules and my own set of values, even if I'm aware they can be off, are all I can really go by. Yet people wonder how I can be happy with the ways I restrict myself, not having 20 outfits to pick from? No 'cheat-meals' chocolate, candy or junk-food? Strict work-out regime rather than winging it? If I need to make too many choices, it just paralysis me.
What an iconic video !! I watched it in more than 40 mns because of repeating and writing the thoughts from it .... I mean Andrew thank you this will help a lot and may be will help others . You deserve all the support mate
My drama teacher always taught us to not ask ourselves "why", but "what for" when acting. Helped me in life immensely when I finally understood that it works as a general principle. Great video!
Your content is brilliant. Thanks to you I use TH-cam differently. I only watch videos that are put out by my subscriptions or videos that I search for. I no longer spin my wheels looking at YT recommendations. And I have deleted my Facebook account. I will reopen it once a month so it’s not permanently deleted because I sometimes use it as a valuable marketing and research tool. But having it deactivated for 29 days a month has freed up so much of my time. And I was surprised at how I was instantly happier when I didn’t browse my newsfeed. I can truly say I love you Andrew. Cheers.
"No one is more dangerously insane than one who is sane all the time: he is like a steel bridge without flexibility, and the order of his life is rigid and brittle." -Alan Watts ;)

Whoever is soft and yielding is a disciple of life. The hard and stiff will be broken. The soft and supple will prevail.”― Lao Tzu
Alan Watts rebelled against the great world empire and culture his ancestors built . It’s easy to tear things down and really easy to be a contrarian when you don’t think you can’t meet tough standards.
That concept is briliant. I never hear about this. For some time now I have been leaving myself in silence and letting my thoughts speak. My life completely changed, i feel better, more tasks is done. Thank you man.
Andrew you're an absolute legend! Far ahead of our generation in terms of understanding and living a life of purpose and fulfillment. Hope to meet and converse with you one day!
I've had a rough couple of years since 2016, the struggles made me realize that I need to channel my thoughts(time) and energy into something that comes back to me, not on something that is lost. Recently I had been thinking about it a lot, TODAY I GOT THE WORD FOR IT - INTENTIONALISM. Now I have an even stronger belief in it.
Summary. Nice concept breakdown in sub-points Essentialism (5): 1. Focusing on one thing, one priority. Instead of diverting your effort into many things and not being great at any one thing, focus your efforts into one thing to be great at that one thing. 2. Keep doing the things that work, stop doing the things that don't. Measure the risks of changing activities that work. 3. Start from 0. Instead of eliminating activities from your schedule, start from zero activities, an empty canvas, an empty calendar. And start adding things. It's easier to add things than to remove them. 4. Doing only things that are truly important, they are either a hell yes, or a hell no. "If it's not a clear yes, it's a clear no". 5. Don't get distracted by the trends or the status quo, your default answer to new things entering your life from the outside world should be no. Minimalism (4). Things own you by: 1. Having too many things, means having to think about too many things. 2. Desiring too many things, being a prey of advertising. 3. Having high maintenance or fixed costs limits your spending freedom because you have separate a portion of your income towards those fixed expenses. 4. Buying things to impress others, instead of buying things that add value to your life or bring you happiness. Intentionalism (3): 1. Freedom. Deciding by yourself why you do everything you do. Not following the status quo, not being someone by default. 2. Personal growth. 3. Improving others, helping others grow.
Life has been tough for me lately. It seems as if everything I have been working for is falling apart. Thank you so much for making this video, it changed my whole perspective on how one should live their life. Continue making these kind of videos, they are for sure helping me and lots of other people as well
I have applied the principle of intentionalism in my parenting style for 22 years. I can tell you it is powerful!! It changed my life and shaped the life of my three children very positively. Now I am applying this to my art career and the power is the same. I also wondered way so few people were taking about intentionalism over the years. Well done for bringing more light on the subject!
I haven't really looked for literature on intentionalism, but I have for a long time told others that I want to be intentional in the way I live. And also authentic (authenticity is huge to me). I think that for me, the core values (as first principles) are health, growth, and sustainability (Doing things in a way that allows growth, supports health, and is sustainable in the long run). It's frustrating when we find our first principles running counter to established institutions and find more roadblocks than opportunities, but as you mentioned, we need to focus on what options we DO have to act (is it within my control or not?
Thank you for allowing me to realize what I HAVE been doing that WORKS and what I get "dragged" into that doesn't! So much has been on point; I got lost after my parents died. I am on my journey, stopping the static...
I felt happier on a physiological level after hearing this. It's nice hearing someone agreeing with your way of living. Living with intention is so much easier in the long run than living by analogy but it does get criticized and lonely at times
I’ve listened to this about 20 times in the last couple of years It’s the greatest reset- back to basics - start again reminder. I love that its very smart advise and it came from someone younger than myself!
You should not say "I'm going to.." as that means it's something you're going to do in the future. That's procrastination. Instead say "I'm doing ...". 😉
I'm very happy to have discovered Andrew. I have listened to so many different masters on this subject, and now I have a new favorite. If anyone ever doubts anything he's saying, then try it. Just a little over a year, and I experience the happiness he describes. I'm experiencing everything he says we will.
Im addicted to self help videos on TH-cam but havent realized change. Ive begun to listen to these videos with my eyes closed and its helped me retain the knowledge better without the distraction of video. Ive also started writing down what I learned on paper. Going to post my values on my board in the wall.
I remember around 10 years ago mapping out my days in 32 half-hour chunks, trying to fill them with diverse activities to have well rounded and entertaining days. Always left me feeling empty and exhausted. Doing one thing at a time, I go to bed thinking about the thing, wanting to come up with solutions the next day. How much smoother would school go if we wouldn't change subjects every hour?
I stayed off the internet and all distractions going 5 months now. To be honest I only come back to check what is new but everything is just the same. So now I find this new video from your channel and it's just great how even when I am cut off from what i choose to prevent I can still follow along some interesting ways to be good in what I do. Not gonna lie to you all that it isn't easy to do something and remain consistent with priority, but the few company I have is quality already. What I find interesting in self improvent basically is this: just prevent the things that seem like they will be a problem if they get too out of control by not choosing to engage in it and by denying its influence. But even if you do this don't forget to enjoy real life struggle and appreciate what you have even if it isn't what you initially want because we can't know everything about everything so we shouldn't act like we are in control.
i feel like intentionalism, although not as commercial as the other two, is on the internet in very obvious and not so obvious ways, there a many resources, blogs and philosophies around it.
Yes you are spot on with this. I want to add something. For a juger personality type according with MTBI test comes relatively easy to go against the crowd and make their own path. That makes them happy, free, gives them a sense of direction / the feeling they live with intention. Its a very powerful mental state to be in. Judgers tend to get into procrastination mode when they are not in this state. If you are reading this and you are a judger and you procrastinate then realize you are procrastinating because you did not dial your vision board in, you have no sense of where you are going, no map, or you don't know where you are on the map. As a judger if you have a map of the territory - meaning broadly your options, values and future laid out - and you know where you are on the map right now with clarity - you not gonna procrastinate. Intention -> clarity -> quick decisions -> ignites action. Yet for a perceiver such a tendency to go against the crowd comes very hard. It's mentally very taxing - its stressing them out. Is not just other people's opinions/ worrying what they think of them, is everything. Doing things like they have been done before - without questioning is one such example. That's exactly why they will tend to procrastinate on anything which requires going against the crowd. Their power is to adapt. They don't have the tendency to change the world around them - they have a tendency to adapt to it. They will feel most comfortable when they go with the flow, and are rely happy in that state. So saying that everybody should go against the crowd is particularly leaving a huge chunk of people out - because they rely should not do that. Yet the problem rely is that society has a bunch of beaten paths which go nowere. Like with the water fall mentioned in the video. Can lead you to death. It's just facts. Society is badly damaged to the core .. far beyond any perceiver ability to adapt and still have a great life. So for a perceiver i would say figure out how to think from first principles on the major decisions - rely ensure they are not rationally stupid and will not for sure make you unhappy - and then just go with the flow on most things since that's what gonna make you feel the most fulfilled. As such internationalism means different things to you and will be implemented differently in day to day practice - depending if you are a j or a p type.
If you aren't familiar with ACT therapy already i would highly recommend it to you. It shares a large amount with what you have discussed here. It also has empirical support for its efficacy at improving well-being. I would also respectfully disagree about freedom because some of the most highly rewarding aspects of life come with compromises and responsibilities which impinge upon one's freedom. Flexibility, specifically psychological flexibility, is something that i would use in my own conceptualisation of your work. After all, being flexibly responsive to our environment is what has always given us the edge.
I was literally thinking that way and started doing most of what you talked about and to my surprise TH-cam kept recommending me this video and now I’m shook!
Andrew, you are amazing, keep doing the incredible work you are doing to make people's lives better. How can I do to 80/20 my learning and studying ??? Will learning from audio and video resources help or should I stick to textbooks and school lectures? I'd be extremely grateful if you could help.
Personally, I read 20% of the time and 80% solving practice questions. I also breakdown 24 hours where 20% I study so that would be about 6 hours of studying everyday...
Dear andrew you are brilliant, i'm a highest level of observer, and i can say, that no one on the youtube can reach the dept of imagine that you can, you are the only one who fills me with positive anergy, i wish if i could have a conversation with you, i really want to... Best of luck for the mile stone that you are surely gonna achive👍
You have an incredible mind and are an incredible speaker. Your ability to just allow your knowledge to flow out while remaining so focus and poised, is beyond cool. Its speaks of who you are and shows that you are channeling your own truth. Awesome!
One of your very best videos ever, Andrew. The quality just keeps rising. Please be sure to take a look at my response to what Superhuman Blueprint said. He's about five or so comments below me, at least for now.
Basically, you're talking about freedom. Freedom to say no, to get rid of possessions/ people/ a job that is making you a slave. When you do, you're then free to choose what you do intentionally. But freedom has a very high cost that most people are not willing to pay. It means being okay with being lonely, uncomfortable, always at risk, under the critics, being at odds with society and the people we love. It probably means putting whatever you're trying to achieve above everything else, a relationship, your family & friends. I actually think that most people are okay with conforming and following what society tells us to do. Human have evolved in tribes and we find happiness when we fit in, because it meant protection from others, more food and a higher chance of survival. It's easy and comfortable, and I think that many people are happy with having a normal & stable life, enjoying the simple joy of having a family, friends & colleagues, a comfortable home, activities and holidays now and then. Being a slave to a job, friends, societal values, a religion can make one's life easier. No need to think about existential questions, just sit back and enjoy the ride. The real problem and misery for most people comes from the destruction of traditional societies and values by extreme capitalism. It has taught us to expect ridiculous things from life; extreme adventure, wealth, fame and other ludicrous and superficial things. This desire for the near impossible is necessary for companies to sell their next gadgets. When we are bombarded with images of what our life should be, we feel that our own is miserable in comparaison. But looking deeper into this image of perfection from celebrities, instagram influencers, millionnaires, are they actually happier? Is it really what we should aim for? Most of it is just an illusion made possible by video editing, photoshop and a good background music. Now, I agree with what you said, following your method, becoming free from all influence to focus on your goal can lead you to greatness, but it's definitely not a guarantee. And you have to be willing to pay the high price of freedom. Freedom can bring happiness to you if you're a leader, an entrepreneur, a lone wolf that can say fuck you to anything and anyone. I think this represents less than 0.1% of people. We can't all be geniuses, millionaires, athletes and singers, and it's totally okay. You can be very happy with being normal, probably even happier that way, if you learn to disconnect yourself from the unrealistic expectations that is shoved down our throats by capitalism.
Spot on summary and I agree, most people are happy and actually wiser if they learn to accept 'good enough' (which for some reason has bad connotations now, but it should mean being humble, not being lazy or ignorant). I'd mention that a good addendum to this is to consider Steve Jobs' quote "Stay hungy, stay foolish" can be interpreted in many ways, one of which is the consumerist way, keep consuming the newest product, keep staying ignorant. The way most people want to interpret it, despite succumbing to the first way, is 'keep alert and keep on hustling, grinding for your purpose, aspiring to be that genius/milionaire/athlete/singer' etc. The way I like to interpret it is keep hungry for knowledge, experience, as it is empowering and necessary for a fulfilling life, but keep humble, keep your 'innocence' and curiosity about the world, to not let a conclusion to a arduous study or a biased opinion or experience wipe away the possibility of doing it all again and relearning things. This confers balance, moderation, which is something much more important than the extreme and superficial ridiculous things social media or whatever form of traditional values degeneration there is out there pushes. When the majority of people will stop asking how (how they live in the manner you said, how to be more like them, etc.) and look more into why (why are they showing me this, what could they accomplish, what is this doing for me and to my person objectively?), and not accept the first opinion of the first biased conspiracy nut and leave space for error and reconsideration, to change his mind of one topic without having that certainty that things have to be one way, only then we will have advanced to a wiser, healthier society. Until then, we can all stay hungry, stay foolish whichever way we wish for.
@@Tudorgeable I think you should be wary of taking Steve Jobs' words or any random monetarily successful person's words as deep wisdom. He wasn't a particularly happy guy even when he liked to give advice haha. Then again, the quote has perhaps sparked the wisdom within yourself. Keep looking within
I stumbled on this channel by pure chance and am very grateful. One of the best channels out there. I think a lot of us are trying to find more meaning and better our lives and it's great that there are people out there who take massive amounts of time spent on self-growth and condense it for others to give a boost to THEIR journey. Your videos definitely inspired me to refocus and redirect my energies in the right way. Especially with my own channel. Looking forward to the process and where it leads. You're doing a great thing with your channel.
i need some advice . I hate instagram and I totally feel self conscious when I use it. but i am currently in barber college and am going to soon be a barber. We get taught that social media is our number one best friend to help our business improve and get more clientele. How do I balance this? I enjoy my career and sadly feel as though Instagram is just going to be something I need to be successful. thanks

Sbdy has to say it: the thumbnails are horrendous. Can you tone down on saturation, advertising like that makes it look like you're selling oil my man.
I have been a borderline for a long time now. For about two years I was engaged in finding a way to do self therapy because they're too expensive for me to afford and suffering endlessly is pointless. I've been a viewer for a few months alone and at first the content was too abstract for me, but slowly I could match with the current and I am definitely able to think and shut the constant clutter at the times of increased panic and anxiety. I've stopped self harming because of I could understand such concepts. Thank you so much. Please keep making these videos.
Small comment that may go unnoticed , but I know it may seem like a small detail to others but the music made this video so much more wonderful !!! Keep up the great work .
The abrupt music for intentionalism scared me because of how focused I was on the video ;___; But, like, wow... I really wanna get my life together for real. I suffer from depression and anxiety and I'm sick of it paralyzing me mentally. I watched a video of yours on procrastination 4 days ago that helped start working out again after 3 months of sitting around in quarantine (also I should probably take a one-day break but it feels too nice to stop and accidentally sabotage my routine). This video is definitely making me serious about my hobbies and my freelance job. Your work is amazing!
At first I cringed at the effort that went into making this video entertaining and memorable like the _dramatic music_ and *expressive speech* - but this is so goddamn HELPFUL and I also wish I had known all this before so THANK YOU YOUNG MAN, GOD BLESS YOUR SOUL
This is actually how Bhuddist monks live. Only focusing on one thing at a time and finding the joy in this. Giving your 100% in what you do. This allows you to be more present and there will be less clutter in your mind.
Andrew- I just came across your videos a few days ago and I love what you are sharing! You break things down and explain each idea very well. I’ve been thinking about the work “deliberate” lately, as in deliberate thinking and the word and idea of intentionalism is very similar. I have been practicing deliberate thinking and minimalism (as you defined it) for awhile now and my life is improving immensely! You given me even more to think about and act upon! Thank you and I’ll continue watching for more great stuff!
For me, this journey of self development happens rather unconscious than conscious, to this point. I recognize the change in my mindset and the way I think, but I feel like it's not because I did something. I'm definetly making progress, but it didn't translate from my mind to my action yet, although I try. I really have to thank you, Andrew. Literally no other source of information has ever kicked of such a wave of change in my head.
Thank you for bringing all this information together! I am living parts of my life with intentionalism, but I wasn't aware that it fell into a category that made sense of it. This video and the topics introduced helped me to rethink what I do in my life and categorize then appropriately. I know my life isn't perfect, but at least I now have some form of evaluation to see how I'm living my life! Thanks again!
I came into this video thinking “oh, another one of those types of videos”, in essence one to clickbait and get views off of self improvement. I’m very happy I was so wrong! This video was seriously helpful to me, and this being the third video of yours that I’ve seen-I’ll be following you for more! You’re doing something here that’s great, and that you’re great at! Keep up the good work 👊❤️

Cheers.

"No one is more dangerously insane than one who is sane all the time: he is like a steel bridge without flexibility, and the order of his life is rigid and brittle."
-Alan Watts
;)
What does this mean
@@add852 It means that everyone's a little insane. Even Gandhi
@@add852
“Men are born soft and supple; dead they are stiff and hard. Plants are born tender and pliant; dead, they are brittle and dry. Thus whoever is stiff and inflexible is a disciple of death. Whoever is soft and yielding is a disciple of life. The hard and stiff will be broken. The soft and supple will prevail.”― Lao Tzu
that's a catch 22, I think.
Commenting for the youtube algorithm, good luck to whoever is reading this though.
Nice!

“I just hope everyone wins 😅 “🤣
Summary. Nice concept breakdown in sub-points
Essentialism (5):
Things own you by:
Intentionalism (3):
1. Freedom. Deciding by yourself why you do everything you do. Not following the status quo, not being someone by default.
2. Personal growth.
3. Improving others, helping others grow.
You make think you didn’t help many people but you truly have helped me with this summary, have a blessed day.
Life has been tough for me lately. It seems as if everything I have been working for is falling apart. Thank you so much for making this video, it changed my whole perspective on how one should live their life.
15:13 Worth watching the whole video for this.
16:28 Reasoning by analogy is just doing things because other people are doing them.
I felt happier on a physiological level after hearing this. It's nice hearing someone agreeing with your way of living. Living with intention is so much easier in the long run than living by analogy but it does get criticized and lonely at times
I'll take action now and apply almost all of what you said !
I 100% agree with you I hope you'll often make few videos on this topic !
I’ve listened to this about 20 times in the last couple of years
It’s the greatest reset- back to basics - start again reminder.
I love that its very smart advise and it came from someone younger than myself!
Such in a perfect time, I'm going to end procrastination and find myself, I really need more videos like this.
Keep going bro, you are life changer❤
You should not say "I'm going to.." as that means it's something you're going to do in the future. That's procrastination. Instead say "I'm doing ...". 😉
I'm very happy to have discovered Andrew. I have listened to so many different masters on this subject, and now I have a new favorite. If anyone ever doubts anything he's saying, then try it. Just a little over a year, and I experience the happiness he describes. I'm experiencing everything he says we will.
I had to download this... This is too valuable to be left on youTube
How much smoother would school go if we wouldn't change subjects every hour?
omg yea its a good idea . if school would have only one or two subject at a day it would be amazing for the students . never thought of this .
Would you mind sharing some of them? Thanks!
Richard grannon spartan life coach talks about it alot

ACT/CBT/NLP are all recommended.
The reason we must value freedom is that it allows us to choose for ourselves what we want to sacrifice our freedom for

Imagine a world were the media pumped out self development, healthy lifestyle, positive content etc...
Modern day philosopher. I hope everyone watches this. So inspiring!
You can be very happy with being normal, probably even happier that way, if you learn to disconnect yourself from the unrealistic expectations that is shoved down our throats by capitalism.
john smith up!!!

The abrupt music for intentionalism scared me because of how focused I was on the video ;___;
But, like, wow...

Great Video Andrew! One core value everyone should have in there life is Grattitude. Thank you
For me, this journey of self development happens rather unconscious than conscious, to this point. I recognize the change in my mindset and the way I think, but I feel like it's not because I did something. I'm definetly making progress, but it didn't translate from my mind to my action yet, although I try. I really have to thank you, Andrew. Literally no other source of information has ever kicked of such a wave of change in my head.
Please make more videos on intentionalism. Your videos are making a huge impact, positive ones, in my life. Thank you so very much.
