I had the pleasure of working with Edwin Moses in creating this video which was one of the video's to be included on his Official Website that I was also designing. From the perspective of a filmmaker, I wanted the Official Edwin Moses Website to provide a visual experience where his fans could still enjoy the many great achievements Edwin accomplished in field & track, and also be able to continue to follow Edwin's work in the world of sports as a leader on the world stage with the Laureus Organization. When people talk about the greatest athletes of alltime, if Ed Moses isn't mentioned then that list is void. Ed is unique. A special case. A master, a genius, a giant, an artist of the highest order in his sport. Dig deeper and learn about what he did to be able to dominate his sport like no one else has ever done. Its incredible.
He definitely revolutionized the short hurdles and now you got Warholm doing the same.
Even though I am English, Moses was one of my athletics heroes when I was a kid. Got his autograph one time at Crystal Palace in London. Treasured!
Edwin was an incredible athlete.
A brilliant, generous man whose athletic triumphs are matched only by his graciousness.
I love how Mike Shine runs up to Edwin Moses and surprises him with that extremely heartfelt hug. They were so proud of each other - and only thinking about being compatriots and countrymen who are proud of each other's achievements. That is true compatriotism.

Unfortunately people who haven't researched Ed Moses's training and methods don't understand how radical and left field he was in his sport. He is a genius. His training methods were so far ahead of his time. The key was that he was always in better shape than his competitors. He developed a totally unorthordox programme. He never had a coach or trainer his entire career, and wasn't affiliated with any US athletics programme. From his beginning in college, he did it on his own, out of nowhere.
Mike Shine was our sprint/jump/hurdle coach at my high school coach. I was a distance runner but he helped me improve so much. Love watching this video.
One of the greatest athletes in history. He would set a new world mark a year later and would go on to that incredible streak of his, which included winning the gold in 1984. The win streak would end in 1987 when he was beaten by Danny Harris and in 1988 Andre Phillips defeated Moses at the Olympics in Seoul.
At those '88 Olympics, where Moses was third, I understand he was kind of in a daze at having lost and out of habit, took the top spot on the medal stand before someone called his attention to it.
Every time I watch this clip, I cannot believe how loose and relaxed Moses' running style is. He is like a gazelle. He trained in a style that was considered very unconventional, studying ballet and dance, which I think you can really see in how he moves. So graceful. And of course Mike Shine with his surprising silver. I'm from his hometown and we all helped him raise money to go to the Olympics and wished him well. But I think we all knew he had little or no chance of making the finals, let alone medal. He ran the race of his life that afternoon. It was really something to see!

There’s a lot of science behind his perfect running style. He used his knowledge of physics to gain legal advantages over the competition which makes him that much greater.
That was a great moment.
I remember it so clearly when Mike Shine hugged Edwin Moses after the race.

Moses was always a classy guy.
This man didn't have a coach or trainer from the time he was in college and all throughout his career. That is unbelieveable. If ever a track and field athlete could be described as a genius, then it would be Ed Moses. His knowledge of conditioning and recovery is what set him apart. He studied ballet to learn to improve his stretching and applied a very scientific approach to his training. He said he saw hurdling as a form of art. He was ahead of his time. A genius!
when asked about a coach he replied he knew more about running the 400 hurdles than anyone else and he was right.
In the late 70’s and early 80’s Edwin Moses was my idol. Thank you Mr. Moses. BR from Sweden

i know mike shine. hes a great guy. its a lot of fun to hear him talk about the olympics, hes still fast. he said that moses was very fast and a nice guy.

I watched this live on ABC almost 40 years ago and it's one of my favorite Olympic moments ever.
While Moses and Shine were taking their victory lap, they attempted to leap over a hurdle and knocked it over. The crowd began laughing and Moses just raised his hands an shrugged his shoulders while smiling wide. I wish that was included in this video.
Their victory lap was so awesome, waving flags and yes, knocking over a hurdle. Mike Shine was from my hometown and we were so thrilled with his silver. He was not expected to even be in the finals. He ran the race of his life.

Mike Shine alternated lead leg over each hurdle - the only Olympian do so and win a medal. He grew up in a small town of only a couple thousand people.
his stride length required 14 steps between the hurdles while Moses did 13 for the entire race, something one no else has ever done.
A lot of 400mh runners do that now, both men and women. Sydney Maclaughlin does it, watch some of her races. I believe Karsten Warholm, Rai Benjamin both do it, too.
As a track official I have to tell you that it is perfectly legal for a runner to step on the line of a running lane so long as he does not interfere with another runner. What a runner is not allowed to do is step outside of his lane if it gives him an advantage or interferes with another runner. Moses' run was perfectly legal.
Second place.......Mike Shine from Youngsville, Pennsylvania. Then on to PSU. Then the Olympics.
Edwin Moses was the smoothest runner I've seen. looked so effortless for him. he had that pacing down to a science.

Ed was an outstanding athlete, i've got nothing but regard and respect for the man, Ed's mannerisms reminds me of my old sports teacher at school, especially the way he limbers up.

Fabulous! Just fabulous! Almost as impressive as Moses' performance is the jubilation on the fact of silver medalist Mike Shine - his triumph was quite unexpected!
Edwin's son goes to my school and i can tell you thet he is 1 of the most humble man i have ever talked to.

I think Mike Shine was just as happy for Edwin as he was. Look at the sportsmanship that they have for each other. It's almost unheard of in this day and time. They both ran a very good race. 🙂😉🤩
I was 13 years old in 1976. Our parents took our family to Montreal from Wisconsin and we enjoyed 4 days of track, 3 of those days in SRO around the final turn. We were there for this race and it was beyond thrilling. Keith Jackson and OJ on the call is interesting, since they were accomplished football announcers by trade. OJ was a track star at USC in his younger years.

I wonder if Alan Pascoe thought he might have had a chance in 1976 based on his performances in 1974 & 1975, however there were two things he didnt predict:
1. A leg injury severly restricting his Montreal preparation
2. The emergence of a unknown athlete from the USA with a pre-1976 best of 51.7 who turned out to be the greatest exponent in the event ever.
Edwin Moses may be the greatest track athlete of all time.
I had the pleasure of watching him at a Crystal palce meet back in the day. I was talking to my colleague at the high jump and I had barely fiished a few sentences when he was back at the finishing line awesome athlete.

Great call by Keith Jackson and Jim McKay... Those were days of TRUE Olympics broadcasting not that disgrace that NBC put on in 2012.

@@billplaney2585 Nope, Keith and Jim McKay. O.J. was still running through defensive lines when the 1976 Olympics took place.
The disgrace started in 1984 hen NBC broadcast the L.A. Olympics. Commercial after commercial after commercial, quick cut to a sports event, then back to commercials. I haven't bothered to watch it live since then.
In my opinion there are 4 Olympic events where the whole landscape of a sport changed: 1. DIck Fosbury 1968, whose "flop" made all other jumping styles obsolete. 2. Olga Korbut 1972, whose backflip touched off a huge interest in gymnastics. 3. 15 year old Katie Ledecky 2012 when she blew away the field in the 800 meters and went on to dominate all distance events since then. 4. This race right here, which signaled Edwin's decade + of dominance of the 400m hurdles.

In early 1980 Mike Shine actually called my house. I did well at a track meet at West Point where he was coaching. He invited me up to take a physical and possibly join the team. I passed the physical and medical tests. I decided the academics were too hard and didn't go.

@@crosslink1493 No Keith Jackson did the call of the race. OJ did the color commentary. Summer Olympics. They don't play football in the summer and hired OJ due to his then popularity plus he was also a track and field athlete in college.
Es Moses was phenomenal. I remember the US boycott in Moscow 1980, and he faced the "Champion" in his absence Beck from East Germany later on in 1980 I think, and he left him for dead winning by 10 metres or more!

Edwin Moses, one of the true superstars of sports, the most dominant athletes, in the top 5 of best track&field athletes of all time, together with Jan Zelezni and Sergei Bubka and don't know who else.
Imagine that !!! Mike Shine finished 2nd in the Olympics to possibly the greatest runner of all time. Edwin Moses. Not bad for a white boy.

Thanks for posting this. It took me back to a cozy living room in Palo Alto where I watched the Olympics with my host family, and we all cheered like crazy for Edwin. Only bad thing about this clip is the commentator named Simpson. Does anybody know if Moses changed his lead foot or the number of half-strides during the race?
Its not Simpson, its Jim McKay. He was a regular figure on ABC sports broadcasts.

Wasn't Mike Shine an alternate who got promoted to regular after one of his team members got injured? Whatever, what a fine moment for him as he was a totally unexpected medalist. Moses on the other hand was one of the all time greats.
Don't think so because he finished 3rd at the trials in June although Jim Bolding who was ahead of him and Wheeler at the 10th hurdle went from 2nd to 4th after stumbling off it.
