    1993 was kind of a crossroads for the Phillies and Padres. For the Phillies, 1993 would be their foremost in the 1990s. They would go to the World Series, lose to the Blue Jays, and have 7 straight losing seasons, bottoming out at 65-97 in 2000. The Padres, on the other hand, would slowly improve, catching the NL West title twice (1996 and 1998) and making it to the 1998 World Series. For all intents, the Padres actually had a better 1990s than the Phillies did.

    If I remember the GKR story correctly, the Mets once had a game in Atlanta that was delayed by rain and it didn't until 2 or 3 in the morning and because it was fireworks night, they set off the fireworks at 3 in the morning.

      That’s what known as the Rick Camp game. He was a relief pitcher that hit a game-winning homerun for the Braves. They did set off the fireworks, and the story goes some frantic Atlanta citizens called the cops thinking the city was under attack by the Russkies or something.

    The San Diego fans got a taste of what it is like for us east coast fans - an opposite coast road game starting in the 10 pm hour their time, going into extra innings, and ending in the 1 am hour their time.
    The Phillies and Padres used to play each other 12 times a season, 6 in each season. Usually, these were 3-game series. Their first 1993 meetings in Phila. were in mid-April. The 3rd game was rained out. The Phillies were happy to escape facing Benes, but it set up that Friday night twi-night doubleheader on Friday, July 2.

    Story about this night. I live in South Jersey. At the time I was a bread delivery driver. I would get up for work at 12:30am. This double header was supposed to begin as they all did in those days at 5:05pm. But as we all know the weather didn't cooperate. Because I have to get up as an asinine hour, I went to bed at about 7pm, during a rain delay(and if there was no rain the first game would probably have been done by this time). When I got up, the first game was almost over. I left my house and game was 1 was over. I get to my warehouse just as game 2 is beginning so I put it on the radio in my truck as I'm loading. Now my route was a hike up the parkway so I get to my route and I'm listening to the game making my drops. The game finally ends while I'm waiting for my first supermarket to open. Surreal doesn't describe it.

    It's wild that second game was played at all; 1:30am should be well past the point of waiting out a delay. But as far as I can tell there were no protests from the mlbpa, no lawsuits, and there were no rules changed as a result is this. All the articles I can find on this game have the players all looking back laughing about it but they looked truly miserable out there at the time. I guess it didn't really matter with one team way out in first and the other in dead last. Nice find, Olive!

    The Phillies and Padres had already played a game that took 14 innings in April and the Phillies and Dodgers went on to need TWENTY innings to decide a winner just 5 days after this one. The Phillies won all 3 because 1993 was a miracle season if there ever was one. Yeah, they lost in the WS but the 6 years before and the 7 years after 1993 were all losing seasons. The ‘93 team used steroids and mojo to come within 2 wins of a totally out of nowhere championship in a sport where teams almost never made the playoffs out of nowhere. Only 4 division winners made the postseason back then. The ‘93 Giants won 103 games didn’t get in.

    • @ronaldwayne7092
      @ronaldwayne7092 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing that REALLY won the division was that notoriously injury-prone players Daulton, Kruk, Hollins, Incaviglia, and Dykstra combined for ONE trip to the disabled list.

    • @freeparking301
      @freeparking301 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And Hollins who broke his hand and was supposed to miss six weeks came back in two weeks. I don’t know what trainer Jeff Cooper was giving those players (well maybe I do hahaha) but they didn’t miss much time. And of those five Inky was the only one who was part of a platoon. Fregosi was getting the best out of those platoons too. Incaviglia was only a couple homers shy of 30 even with Milt Thompson getting significant time of his own in left field. The Morandini/Duncan 2nd base platoon and the Eisenreich/Chamberlain right field platoon each hit and fielded well too. Dykstra, Daulton and Kruk had career years and it’s weird seeing this game with none of them including Hollins getting the start since they started game one. Yet you knew it wouldn’t be till they came off the bench and were like “if I’m pinch hitting you might as well put me into the game.” Still my favorite team of all time and the team that got me to fall in love with baseball as a child. Now if only Fregosi didn’t use the living hell out of the arms of West, Andersen, and Williams which each had 70 appearances during that regular season and what do you know they all made appearances in this game hahaha. By the time they got to Toronto they were spent.

      7 teams actually. The Rockies and Marlins were new. The next season they realigned with 3 divisions. Sucks that the Padres were the only team to ever finish as low as 7th place in the west.

    You said the Padres haven't made a play off experience since the 70s? They made the WS in 84 how is that possible?

      I said one playoff appearance since 1969, which is true.
