Even when they buried the bodies, if you noticed Askeladd's face, it was really cold and kinda messed up, and this gives me the perspective that he was hurt by what he did, but it was necessary from his point of view and the danger of these people to expose his plane+ he saw it as a merciful kill that because they no longer have food, he would take all the food for his army..
