I agree we need Rick to do more interinterviews with visual artists in their studios … it take things to another level ….thanks Rick …. Hope to meet you one day with my 🖼️ art …cheers
wes was my Buddy back in Jersey. He worked for me at my Tattoo shop Powerhouse tattoo. We hung out and got into the rave scene at the Limelight. Is was so fun to go on this journey with him again. I remember so many of these stories from back then. it was cool. SO glad he has been so successful. Nice going.
Wes is one of the reasons I started making art. His book ‘Everything’ is something I could just stare at for hours. Never thought an interview like this would ever happen. There’s only been a handful throughout the years that have come back but I always find myself coming back to watch again.
Tetragrammaton is my favorite podcast. One piece of constructive feedback is show the painting up close when they are discussing the piece. I love their reactions but I want to react to it as well. Thank you Rick and team for ALWAYS putting out quality episodes!
Wes is such a fine human, inspirational artist in many ways... I bought the book "be here now" 10 years ago just because he recommended. Thank you so much for that interview/sneak preview. Impressive...
Great interview. I know Wes I want to say I met him around 07 or 08. A few friends and myself were outside a bar sitting around our bikes bullshitting and this dude comes walking up to me and says hey man I dig your bike. He was pretty buzzed and I’m thinking I hope this guy doesn’t want to fight cause I’m really not in the fighting mood! Lol plus he shook my hand and he had a pretty big hand and I’m not a small guy but I didn’t want to roll around with this guy. He said he was an artist.Anyway we talked for a few minutes and he seemed like a nice fellow so we exchanged numbers and thought we’d never meet again. I thought just a buzzed dude being very social. But he called me and invited me and my buddy to an upcoming birthday party. We had a great time and what really made the night extra special was My buddy and I who have been riding motorcycles since our teens had one of our best nights riding in ages. Perfectly clear night sky about 3 in the morning few cars on the road giving some chick Fannie a ride into Manhattan and then home but a perfect ride! We made friends with Wes and although there was 20 something years between us he had an old soul. Very easy to talk to and very easily drawn to him. Glad to see how well he’s doing and he’s a family man now. Blessed! I hope he reads this and knows I’m still alive and well!❤😂
Love this ☝️! As a painter, graphic designer making music , I can relate to the obsession, gathering, collecting images, sounds, albums. Got into reggae, roots, dub, then shamanic soundscapes. Greetings from Haiti 🇭🇹 we’re still alive n making art. Mrs Rubin, loved your book…I even made a puppet of you to animate. 🙌
its so interesting to me to see the divide in the response to this in these comments. Some love this man and seemingly love his art, some think negative things about him. I think the art Its not perfect or amazingly talented works, but i find the stories and the idea that he enjoys coming up with these narratives as a beautiful form of art encompassing these paintings. I feel so much art in this time period is made to look nice, appeal to people, or to mean something to others... whether political or to express an objection to society, or just to make money. I feel like this man is creating art to tell stories important to him, and that makes him a great artist in my eyes.
I would love to hear Rick Ruben talk to Odd Nerdrum the Norwegian painter about art and life. I think both men would have an appreciation for the other's perspectives on life, art and philosophy. Both have that Prophet vibe.
Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow is actually several years earlier than Joe’s Garage (‘79); it’s on Apostrophe (‘74), which btw has a brand new release for its 50 anniversary.
Okay just started, I already know I’m gonna love this one, he’s got a JFA shirt! My friend Lily’s dad Corey Stretz plays bass for them. Will edit my comment with an update once I finish watching 🙌
I thought I would love this vid, since Rubin always asks the best questions, and this guy is a visual artist, plus has a JFA shirt. I figured I would connect to all of this right away, since I am just a few years younger than him, (skateboarding, and doing/consuming art) and assuming it would be rad. It is rad, but I just don't know? Do these feelings have to do with my ego? Thematically, his has a direction, with the skulls, but, I don't know about his background beyond this video. I googled a wiki page, but it has been blocked or "not available". I wonder if he has a theology degree or anthropology, or something, but I sort of think he is just at the right place at the right time. Sounds like dude got hooked up, big time. He got to be there, and breath it. I guess that gives you credit. Can someone share with me any info about his parents? Having a dad who gives you a job at a record store would be so rad!
so interesting how rich people / owners like block out any thought of money / class. that makes it make sense why they get so freaked out when theyre forced to confront it
I want to say this first I’m giving this episode a chance because my respect for Rick and his insight on creativity. But I’m 13 minutes in and I’m losing interest because the conversation is so one sided. I’m not trolling I’m just stating my truth. Hope you are having a beautiful day and thank you for the visuals.
is this for real? felt more and more like typical parody sketch the longer it dragged on. ingenuine LA bs artist speak . . nothing new. cliche. shallow. . name drop name drop blah blah. RR couldn't even act like he believed what this guy was saying half the time.
He's a sober self obsessed artist with no self awareness so it comes off as satire or ironic. pretty common but im surprised he hasn't grown past that and just be real.
I love harmonised palettes like you're saying, but I think his work benefits from the crudeness like James Ensor, gives it dark humour that I think he is going for
Wes seems like the most vapid, least interesting artist of our time. It's like he's been developed by an media company. Dishonest eyes hidden behind sunglasses as he spouts empty, boring monologues. Signalling how cool he is with old punk shirts. Jesus. Rick should be embarrassed for entertaining this fake hack.
His art is just a rip-off of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Listening to artists talk about their work is cringe. They are so self-obsessed and self-important. "I, me, me, mine"
More gallery / artist studio / Private View episodes please.

I’m not exactly sure why but I started crying while watching this. Wes feels like the big brother I never had. Thank you for being you.

Never heard of him before till now, absolutely love his work and am inspired. Thanks Rick, keep doing interviews like this
Beyond fantastic!!
Beautiful, thank you.
Mastery at its best 🙏🏻✨
In Wes' interpratations of his own work, there is often breathing-room for mystery as an underlying spirit.
As a painter, I absolutely love this, more of it please Rick 🙏❤🙂
Why is the dark mix muddy.Needs a lot more blue!
Anthony O Grady Facebook.I did this dark stuff starting off.Ive got a lot brighter.
Very motivating, recognizable and clear. Great questions. Thank you ✨

Superb.
Wes and Rick!!!! LFG

SOLID.
In not so many words, Wes has been very lucky and has had alot of opportunities to succeed.
Amazing
Rubie, you're only seeing values with those glasses on. Thanks for interviewing a visual artist!
you're such a good interviewer
Masterpieces, and insane studio space.
This is childish, and hearing him explain in depth just for Rick to say. "Ya, it's Big," says it all.

Okay just started, I already know I’m gonna love this one, he’s got a JFA shirt! My friend Lily’s dad Corey Stretz plays bass for them. Will edit my comment with an update once I finish watching 🙌
Am I weird for being so pumped about this video?
No. Another one over here 👋
would love to see you interview musicians in their creative spaces
Love the reading of the Tao
Wes Lang is a badass: thanks RICK RUBIN
good chat, gentlemen.
i love it 👌🏻
This is amazing
wow, i forgot about drawing battlestar gallatica ships, thanks
I heard of him after his paintings on the new Avenged Sevenfold´s record. Wes is amazing

Wes Lang is such an inspiration 🔥
This is my kind of neurodivergent. Thank you for making this.

JFA shirt.. Placebo Records. Wes Lang has resurfaced. Rubin and Wes. Should be good.

How Rick got
Aptly visual. Your variability in the content creation realm is inspiring to continue to tickle the right creative modality in novelty.
Is Wes wearing a JFA tee shirt??
Did this guy paint the picture in The Royal Tenembaums?

The Men who contributed to Yeezus heavily. Random thought
Rick I would like to invite you into my home to see some art and to investigate new realms of imaginary worlds
is this for real? felt more and more like typical parody sketch the longer it dragged on. ingenuine LA bs artist speak . . nothing new. cliche. shallow. . name drop name drop blah blah. RR couldn't even act like he believed what this guy was saying half the time.
couldnt agree more
yea ngl wasnt feeling this one
He's a sober self obsessed artist with no self awareness so it comes off as satire or ironic. pretty common but im surprised he hasn't grown past that and just be real.
painting skulls ok
he should take some color theory classes. the art looks copy and paste collage junk. the composition is elementary, id recommend revisiting Degas
I love harmonised palettes like you're saying, but I think his work benefits from the crudeness like James Ensor, gives it dark humour that I think he is going for

😂 I thought the same but none of us are perfect, he just doesn't know how to abbreviate wtf he's trying to say.
Wanksta bs.
His art is just a rip-off of Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Glorified hacks.
