I was thinking of trying these. I play regular dominants now with a pirastro gold e. But I'm a complete beginner and don't know anything.
@@kevinbrianjohnsonmusic Honestly, If you're a beginner. You might want to try D'Addario Prelude strings. They're really good for someone who's wanting to try out the violin and doesn't want to spend a lot of money on strings. (they can get real pricey real fast)
Hi Eric. I am an old violinist now 69 yrs. Took up violin at 19,a neighbour helped as we were isolated in a small town and did not get a lot of exposure to the arts. Over the years I have played in various venues church,musicals city orchestra quartet and more. I really appreciate your thoughts and manner of teaching, you must be. Areal asset to your community. Thanks so much for what you do and thanks for lesson on up bow staccato. Also I try various strings as well. Presently l am playing “I’ll can one” by Larson Denmark you might like them.

I used Warchall E with Dominant most of my playing times.. its is bright, good sound AND lasts longer than dull not soo good dominant (basic set) E strings.
I play a naturally darker violin. I have Eva Pirazzi Gold on it, but I don’t like them. They’re wearing out way too quickly. The projection is good, but I hate how the G string sounds after six months. Any recommendations for strings that aren’t dark but a bit brighter to complement my darker instrument? I ordered Larsen Tzigane…they might be a bad idea because they are dark. If I hate them, I want to have an idea where to go. Thanks!
Perhaps a set of vision solo strings might provide you with a focused sound. Might be warm but at least you’ll have the focus that you need.

I was thinking about trying dom pro but i tried perpetual and glad i did really pleased i took a chance on pirastro perpetual
A piece of advice for the "getting dull E string" Thomastik Spirit's E is brilliant and lasting. I've had it in use for 2 years or more and the sound is still pretty good. Plus it rarely whistles.

I would like to hear you try out the Warchal Amber Strings. As for the Dominant Pro's, I have two violins. One is dark and the other is very bright. I should preface anything I am about to say with the fact that I am an amateur and a collector. I have on my Roth from 1924, the Evah;s, as they work the best for a dark instrument. I recently put the Dominant Pro's on my Anselmo Bellosio from 1783 which is a very bright instrument, and I have spent hundreds of dollars trying to find the best set for this violin. I have to say, they really suit the instrument, and though newish, they are settling in very nicely. As well, I find that they have a vast range of colour, and are very comfortable to play, as you mentioned. I think if a professional can get two to four months out of a set of strings, they are doing well. Thanks for your content. Hope to see a video review of the Warchal's.

I'm currently using the Dom Pros, my first new string brand after playing Evahs for thirteen years straight. I really like them and found that when they got old they got duller but didn't die a fast sudden death the way Evahs seem to probably because they are a lower tension string. I've got some holiday stuff coming up we'll see how they blend in a group. I am curious if there is another low to mid tension string that is comparable. I've played on Obligatos before waaaaay back in the day but I don't think they had the same resonance. I voted for the Rondos for you to try.
Obligatos tend to be in a darker sound world and are lower tension than the pirazzis. Evan Pirazzi strings die a lot faster, for sure! To answer your question on the lower tension strings, the set I used before Dominant Pro are the TI strings from Thomastik. They're a luthier series string and feel and sound nice.

I play bluegrass fiddle, and I love the Rondos. Of course I don’t play in an orchestra, everything I do is solo. But those strings can flat out deliver. They break in in about a week, and then reach a plateau for 2 to 3 months of incredible sound, then they level off to what is a sweet sound which is not their peak, but highly acceptable…
I've been curious about the Rondos, I'll have to give them a try.
Agree completely, I bought the pros, but I am back to the old Dominants, because of the sweeter sound

I tried them & by installing Geared Pegs, I was able to cut down the break in time & increase the response. A CodaBow Joule & Dark Kaplan Premium Rosin helped me work around the string response.
Try the T.I. strings! They blend rather well and are now available in the US through Shar. (I made a video on my channel reviewing them, but it's more how they fare for solo stuff, so that won't answer your blend questions...).

I actually play viola, but why not Passione Strings? I tried them long time ago ( normal tension), but I was not convinced, tried them for some days and had to change them. I found them to sound amazing some moments, but difficult to play, like you will need to change your bow technique to get the best of this strings, the tension was too different from the strings I had before, the string will not stay in tune..... I felt unsure.....But now I tried the "striff" option, and this time I kept on playing them longer . After two days I found, yes they sound amazing but something in me was like " go back to a more conventional "safe" string like Peter Infield" but I payed so much money for the Passione strings that I told myself, you have to play this strings al least some months. Now just a week later, the string settled, they stay in tune and I got used to them, ( bow speed/intensity) and after so many years and so much money invested to find the perfect strings for my viola, this is it. Not only the sound is beautiful, so much colors to explore, my playing improved like a miracle, I can get steady sounds in higher positions playing pianissimo, at the same time my viola never sounded as loud, but a beautiful clear loud sound...... I think the extra tension of the "stiff" option made the difference. Besides that, I will not recommend Passione if you are orchestra player
And there are almost no videos about Passione strings, so I hope you try them!
Put a Jargar Forte A on the stark Passione set you will like it. The Eudoxa-Oliv C is also something to try with them.

Interesting review, I came from Pirastro Eudoxa and in comparison the Dominant Pros sound much brighter on the edge to harshness on my violin. It got better after a break in period , but I still don't like the sound at the high registers of the G-string. There is a kind of metallic element in the tone, which of course can become handy for wide projection in a concert hall, but I am only recording at home and I don't get the same warmth than before.
I voted "surprise me", because I'd like you to select what you think will match your instrument and type of playing. Then give a review on how they compared with other sets that you have liked.

I full agree with you. after around 3 month the sound become bad. Still powerfull , I will say only powerfull
After 5 months, they’re still powerful and loud strings. But, I’m lacking the resonance when I first put them on. Thanks for commenting and being a part of this community!

Woah, those are definitely interesting strings! Haven't played on those in a while. Did you ever try the Passione strings?
@@erictheviolinist No I haven't tried them...but seriously considering giving it a go. I am looking for an honest review....not the usual hype of benign opinions which say little or nothing about the strings in real world application. And of course Pirastro is going to say they are the best thing since sliced bread. I know Anne Meyers uses them (or at least used to) and probably others as well. I want to try something "gut" to see if they fit what I am looking for. I have a brand new set of Dom Pros waiting to be tried but want to try the Passiones first.
@@midirat1255 From my experience with the passiones, they are very fine strings, but don't last long term because of the are a gut string. However, I applaud Pirastro for giving it a try to create a gut string that any modern violinist can use. I'll certainly add the Passione to the list of string reviews I will do on the channel!

If everyone in an orchestra played Dominant Pros, nobody would stick out. If they sound great, seems to me that could be a good solution...better than everyone playing inferior strings.

They're well balanced all throughout the strings, but would like a little more variety.
