  • The goal of this video is to shed some light on those who worked hard on something but never got what they wanted or deserved. I recently when through this with my IB exams and thought to share my emotions and thoughts on this romanticized notion of "hard work = success". If you are going through this as well, just know that you are not alone and that you'll find a way out.
Hope you liked this video! If you have anything to share, drop it in the comments below :) Also, please leave a LIKE and SUBSCRIBE! TY!

Dear Edison, you are correct, working hard does not lead to success. I learned this lesson the hard way, after pouring my entire being into my dreams, nothing happened. I eventually had to give up when I was facing death from my efforts. There are higher powers that control your destiny, it is not up to you. Take care.

It must have been tough for you. I'm sure you tried your hardest. But I guess some things just aren't meant for us. Either way, I think that these experiences can help us open our eyes to see further than just these often materialistic goals. I don't know what you've gone through, but just know my friend, you'll make it out stronger and wiser. I wish the best for you in your future endeavours. 😃😃

Great video. I tried my hardest to get into med school and failed. But it took me on an amazing path and career and I love my life now. I feel lucky I learnt how to be resilient and adaptable from that early failure. Some people never learn this lesson and don’t gain this valuable wisdom. I can relate to you as a fellow Arabian(aisan). When I look at famous successful people, I find that they were not merely hard workers. If the world truly appreciated hard work above all else, then construction workers would be among the highest paid - but they are in fact often among the lowest paid, despite their difficult labor.
Simply working hard is not what leads to success. What really matters is working smart, with direction, focus, effectiveness and efficiency. Success comes from having realistic expectations and flexible, adaptable plans that prioritize maximizing outcomes from one's efforts.
A perfect example is what happened to a factory machine once. The machine was designed to run for 4 days a week. However, when a new inept engineer took over the project, he decided to have the machine work for longer hours each day. Eventually, the machine broke down because it was pushed beyond its intended operating capacity.
The lesson here is that success depends not on endless toiling, but on carefully directed effort applied strategically over time. Outcomes result from working in harmony with realistic limitations and changing conditions, not defiance of them. Hard work alone means little without focus, strategy, innovation and efficiency. That is the type of "smart work" that leads to meaningful rewards and enduring achievement.

I am actually quite shocked at the timing of this video as it very much applies to me. I went through the same thing, working 8 to 9 hours a day with little to no breaks in year 12. I was being praised by teachers for being 'so hardworking' & literally even had a friend come up to me who said I make them feel motivated to work harder. I ended the year with UEC in my A levels. I relate to everything you said in this video, especially the part about feeling guilty when taking breaks. I think the best thing we can do now is to simply look back at the mistakes we made in yr12 & learn from them to do better. Thank you for making this video & I wish you the very best of luck with the next academic year & achieving your long term goals!

You're right hardwork doesn't always pay off, but the world is tough.Sometimes I feel like I shouldn't have tried at all if there was no point but i've had life lessons to teach me how to be resilient and to try to wake up feeling energized enough to do my daily schedule without breaking down and being insecure the whole day,it ends up with me doing nothing and being antisocial that day and im still trying to stop although showing a bit of resilience can help you push harder and move on.

But finding one's treasure isn't the most important, it's about the journey that went along with it. I'm sure you were one of those people who have already walked 1 million steps, but maybe the 1 000 001th step is what you are looking for. Great video. I empathize with you and this video and I have a short story to reply with. For my entire time as a student until finishing high school I never had any issues. Never had great grades but not horrible either. I was always flying under the radar, wanting to be done with everything without putting in almost any effort. For one reason or another, it worked. Until I got to college. After my first year I had failed 7 classes. I only started getting serious around the end of my 3rd year.
Because of those failed classes I had to take an extra year to finish my studies (mechanical engineering). In my final year I had to sit through classes that I basically already knew back to front with people 4-5 years younger than me. My point is, the most important thing and what makes the biggest difference is getting back up and coming back. The ones who can do that are the ones who will eventually succeed in their pursuits. It's not about being the best or the smartest, it's about resilience. So keep going.

So that’s why it hit me hard this time when my hard work didn’t pay off. But this experience taught me a lot and I will surely bounce back. But this time maybe with a much more open mindset. Thank you for leaving this comment and I wish the best for you in the future as well 😃😃

I'll try to remember this video I watched whenever I am feeling like this, and knowing the fact that I'm not the only one who is going through this; that everyone at my school, everyone at other schools around the US and worldwide are facing the same problems I am.

However, this video is not made to discourage anyone, I simply wanted to show the darker side of examinations in general, not just IB. However, this year was a little special. Since the May 2023 exam was the first post-pandemic exam, they were extra strict on the grading, u can compare to the older years. The average student dropped a whopping 6 points from their predicted, which is immense! Anyways, things will for sure get better, don’t be too hard on yourself. I am inspired that you have no regrets. If you want to try again, by all means do so, make sure that you examine what you have done, make the changes required, that you see. and hit it again.

relatable. i gave up on the full diploma for an IB cert. and it was for the best. since graduating uni and taking a gap year, hs means little. i wish i lived more authentically instead of keeping up images for my then-teachers and peers. in a way, each stage of life may be framed as such; 'pouring our hearts out and ending up w/nothing'. even now as i prep law school apps, i remind myself how futile these 'significant institutions' are to me. life's purpose is greater than grades and the approval of authorities/gatekeepers imo. few may approve or applaud me in the end, tho i hope to live contentedly w/my choices knowing they were not for the sake of superficiality.

Then after 1 month, i realized that i didn't give enough time for myself to chill with schoolworks and project, i didn't manage my time because i sometimes cram before deadlines and exams. Hey this was a great video, ya know a suggestion is to study in an efficient manner, there is so much information you are retaining with constant hours of studying with no break as well as sleep, it’s important to get that rest it allows the brain to diffuse and relax instead of being so focused with all the pressures. You have a lot of potential and I think if you were to be more efficient then it can be significantly better. Every setback happens so we can come back. Hard work can pay off, you have to be the best of the best I believe but you have to keep yourself well. Keep at it man.

Thanks for your kind words. I was so narrow minded at the time that all I could think about was study study study. Now I'm able to see the bigger picture. This experience might've ended in an unpleasant way, but I think that I've also gained alot from this. 😄😄😄

I feel you. "Hard work = success" was mostly spoken by successful millionaires who were fortunate enough to be born in a position where their efforts actually mean something and they don't have to worry about wasting their time trying to achieve their goals. Or, those people who idolize them so much that they parrot everything these millionaires say. We have our dreams but sometimes we have to sacrifice them just so that we could eat and pay rent. We can't afford aiming and missing our shots, we have to work extra hard just so that we could reach merely 1% of their power.
Hard work is like running, faster than ever. But even though you know that you have a goal, you don't know if you're running in the right direction. All you know is that you are running with all your might. But in most cases, you put in a lot of work and mileage, and it turns out you've been running in the opposite direction. Even worse, you've been running so hard, your legs give out and you can't run anymore. So you're stuck, thinking about how people have made it while you're limping (burnt out). To add insult to injury, running speed is also a variable, so you "working hard" may not be as hard as someone else's, and that would result in us being called lazy despite already putting our all.
I honestly loathe the notion "Hard work = success". It's toxic, noxious, destructive, cancerous. This notion will always come to "If I could do it, then why can't you?". It displays the lack of empathy and understanding that not everyone works the same way. Nothing is guaranteed in this world. The world doesn't owe us anything. The world is cruel not only for students but also those who aren't "worthy" enough to be blessed with exceptional intelligence, talent, or perfect health.
People often forget about the 2 most defining factors of someone's success: "Luck" and "Nature". Luck as in, no matter how much effort and time you put into something, you are not guaranteed for success. Nature as in, no matter how much effort and time you put into something, if you weren't meant to be doing the said thing, you will not be successful. That's why I'd say "growth mindset" is just a BS copium. You can't tell me that anyone can be a musician, or an artist, or a doctor, or an athlete if they "work hard enough". To those who disagree with me, cop on. That's not how the world works. Nothing really matters in this world and life is not worth living unless you're fortunate enough to be in a position where it somehow is.
I'm 25 and I can tell you that life is just as cruel, or even more after you graduate. I've destroyed several dreams of mine, wasted money and time for businesses that failed. I'm still in the same position I was back when I was in university. Unfulfilled, unsuccessful, alone. And the only thing that grew was my hatred towards myself. Now I have a full-time job, which prevents me from working hard to chase my dreams. It's just not physically possible as I don't have enough energy to do everything. That's why I'm planning on taking my own life at 30. I hope you don't have to suffer the way I did. Much love and best of luck for you. Thank you for sharing and making this video.
    Edit: grammar

Kalitay thank you for sharing your insights with me. I’m sure you’ve gone through many difficult times and as a result, matured increasingly fast and I’m honestly very surprised that a 25 year old is typing this. I mean no offense but you are wiser than most people your age. But man, listening to your story really makes me sad, it’s so dark and cruel. But please, please, do not take your own life. I’m sure you already heard this before and hate it but a permanent solutions for a temporary problem just isn’t it. In a way, I’m sorry that this video worsened your experience and life. But please, there is light in the other side. So please don’t take your own life. We all have our timeline. I can’t say anything for sure, but there is hope in this world. Life may seem dull and meaningless right now, but please, I’m here to listen. Rant to me, shout at me, and throw at me all your pent up stress and I’ll listen. Just please, I’m begging you, please don’t take your own life. Goals are not always the priority, just living a simple life is enough. We don’t got to be successful, just gotta live as you are. I’m sure you are a fine person, even if the world shoots u down , I disagree with them. Because we are all wonderfully made. I believe that.

No mate. Please don't take your life. Hang in there! That you tried, is all that matters. Life is not all about success stories. Happiness in day to day life in little things is the main thing. Enjoy the journey, not the destination.

If you wanna share your story to me, I can listen. But please don't take your life. Death is not worth it and life itself is NOT over rated, every ounce of it. See every successful person worked hard, but not all hard working people succeeded. If you don't work hard, then you are out of that slim chance of fate to even succeed. So working hard at your dreams and trying is all that matters, not the destination. Please please please please LIVE.

A little story I like a lot came to mind watching your video. It's not mine, though I think it's fitting regarding the topic of "solely working hard".
    ---
Once upon a time there was a lumberjack, who sought out a job at a lumber-mill. The pay was decent, the working conditions were compelling, so the lumberjack wanted to leave a good impression.
On the first day he went to his supervisor who gave him an axe, and he was assigned a forest area. Enthusiastically he went to work.
In just one day he logged eighteen trees!
"Congratulations", said his superior. "Keep it up!"
Motivated by the encouragement the lumberjack decided to even surpass his results for the next day. So he went to bed extra early that night.
The next morning he was up before anyone else, and went straight into the forest.
Despite his best efforts he did not manage more than fifteen.
"I must be tired", he thought for himself. So he decided to go to bed straight after sundown.
In the morning dawn he woke up with the firm resolution, to most definitely surpass his achievement of eighteen trees. He didn't even manage half the amount.
The next day it was seven trees, the day after five, and the last day he spent almost entirely logging a second tree.
Deeply concerned of what his supervisor would think of him, he came forward and explained what had happened, and promised faithfully he had been toiling away relentlessly every single day.
His superior asked him: "Wenn have you sharpened your axe last?"
"Sharpened my axe? For that I didn't have any time, I've been too busy chopping trees!"
    ---
Your dedication & ambitions are admirable, definitely a strong trait of yours to pull off working this hard. So don't be too harsh on yourself, as failures are a part of life, so don't beat yourself up on top of it! Easier said then done, and I also understand your frustrations, still, as a reminder ;)
And if I may finish with a personal story of mine, I was working towards my deadlines at uni, if I failed them I wouldn't be able to continue my studies. Too much pressure honestly, rather unpleasant. I had like 10 days left until then, though I wasn't where I wanted to be (obviously).
BUT, applying the idea of taking a break, I took an entire day off for myself as I felt I needed it. No computer, no phone. Went outside, met a friend for coffee, spent few hours in a park by myself, and even went to a small concert in the evening. Just few things I enjoy.
Ofc, a part of me was thinking "I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS!", though once I was outside, took time, and started recharging that voice was long gone already. And then the following days everything went much smoother, and my progress was much better again :)
Anyways, probs bit much, main thing was the story that came to mind. We need to sharpen our tools too, every once in a while ;)

    Hey,
This video is so true and just states the straight up fact of it. I know I am late to the video but I hope you're doing alright. Don't forget that although it helps to have these grades, it is not what defines you.
For example, one of my teachers said that many of her friends did terrible on final year exam although later in life they worked hard with other things and those final year 12 grades aren't the only thing that allows you into diffrent things (although heloful) because lots of her friends who did terrible are now lawyers.
This is not to say don't work hard but I hope fellow people understand what I am trying to say.

Another new subscriber here too :) I also have to prepare for some important language tests, I've also set a pretty rigid preparation schedule for myself, with strict deadlines without any pity for my body and mental health. However, I quickly realized that I could get this burnout stage so quickly, so I just gave up all the idea of training down to the drain, I just substituted it into the process of just engulfing into the language, feeling this nature and so on. I just got to the idea that I started hating the routine, the way I prepared, so I've switched onto another more effective ways of preparation. Perhaps, my exam isn't as much important as yours, I just say myself that it's okay to prepare in such "loose and smooth" way, it's okay to feel these setbacks, and it's more okay to be motivated by these setbacks. I really liked you video, it relates me a lot! I'll repeat what others say: what doesn't kill us, makes us feel stronger! Don't give up and 加油!我相信你!

I love that you are self-aware and willing to try new approaches. I'm also studying a language on the side and I've also come to the realization that when it comes to the art of languages, it cannot be rushed. It should be enjoyed. Whenever I try to set a rigid schedule, I fail to enjoy learning that language, much like how you described it. I've really come to terms with this setback and, with the amazing and encouraging words that you and a dozen others have given me, I'm feeling a million times better now 😆😆😆. 谢谢, 我也为你加油!

Yes we've worked hard and we did pour our entire soul into these exams. But thats where we went wrong, we dont need to put ourselves through hell to succeed. We need to be disciplined yes, and we do need to study hard ,however we need to live aswell. This is just a curveball and im completely sure you can get over it, take it as a learning experience,to reflect and pause, so the next time we are even more prepared. We have to fail to succeed. Lot of people here said very helpful bits and pieces why only working hard doesn't just lead you to the wished outcome. I found myself in very similar situation many times and I think it all comes down to this. Working hard doesn't pay off if you channel it the wrong way. Someone in here said it similarly. Hard work has to be used smartly to be effective.
Taking breaks is one big factor, getting enough sleep, eating healthy so you also have energy throughout the day. But also giving some time to yourself, so you don't get lost in the hard work. I saw someone commenting about letting yourself reflect upon what you did, which is really helpful I feel. Maybe some small hobbies, just something to balance out the workload you put into it, having some sort of structure that will hold you throughout the study path you are walking.
Glad you feel better than when you were making this video. I keep my fingers for you, it's a really painful journey at times but you'll get through it eventually, even if the light at the end of tunnel seems really far away.
Actually keeping my fingers for all of us, who reflects with this video.

I get what you mean and I certainly have felt that way. But one thing that you might be missing is that, judging by this comment alone, you are comparing yourself to others and seeing yourself through other people’s eyes. I’m sure you’ve been mistreated and felt indignation before but work for your own goals and benefits. At the end of the day, people might judge me for not achieving such a high score (all my teachers expected highly of me) but it’s their problem to deal with. I tried and it will forever be part of my timeline. Either way, we all think differently and I don’t know you, so all I can say is to work hard no matter what others might think. Hey, I don't know what you went through or what you were working for but sometimes things happen. Nobody lives a perfect life, perfection doesn't exist in this world. However, it's our perspective that truly matters. I know you are down in the slumps right now but try to look at things in a brighter way, even just a little. That absurdism way of thinking won't get you anywhere. I hope you feel better soon.

Yes, hard work doesn't necessarily pays off when you are doing it wrong. Not an expert in studying, but I think there are approaches on how to do different things. Once you know how to play the "game", you will at the minimum manage to get by.

@edisonzhao5 it's definitely been a learning process for me but also my journey is unique. But the key takeaway is that it is all about the journey, not the end result. I've been challenging myself for the past 10 years but even more so over the past 2 years and I've seen so much growth but also its been more extreme ups and downs than I've ever imagined possible(and still going) but I refuse to give up on myself! 😀

I can relate. I wanted to study economics and I did well on past papers and my predicted grade was a 7 in Econ. I did the final papers and I thought I did well and then I found out I got a 4. I had made revision notes for the entire class, and friends who said they used them alone to study got higher grades than me. I didn’t know what went wrong and I felt really bad about it. I graduated top of my class in uni and I’m still bothered about that 4 in Econ.

i almost had a similar experience when i grinded for the ACT for a good scholarship. my last score was a 25, and after over a month and a half of studying relentlessly, i only squeaked a 26. thankfully, the scholarship i wanted allows superscores to be used so i got my intended score (28 or higher). my final superscore was a 28 LOL
