Wonderful! I love Peter Glossop in this - so incisive and vigorous

Thrilling video! The real revelation is Gwyneth Jones, singing with extraordinary beauty and executing trills and arpeggios. Sometimes I wonder if she should’ve stayed with Verdi and Puccini, and eschewed all those Wagner and Strauss roles.

absolutely!!! the German rep ruins voice, unless they have that naturally angular edge. nothing to do with voice size, but colour.

Agree. The young Jones exhibited great promise which was never fully realised for the reason you stated. Did you know that she was a replacement in this production for Leontyne Price who was unable to appear.

Wonderful to hear Dame Gwyneth when her instrument was at its freshest 1964-68. The studio recording of this aria is among the best I have yet to hear. It was made about 2 years later.

In response to Mark Hood's comment, I have the FULL recording of the performance on CD. In Act III, Scene 2, Bruno Prevedi handled BOTH tenor arias with distinction and to considerable applause. There must have been some other reason for the (rather crude) editing of the tape, before it was televised.

It was recorded but cut before transmission. Prevedi was not in best form that night and might well have butchered the Stretta.

A very great cast led by the very great conductor Carlo Maria Giulini - who did fewer operatic performances at this point in his career. So a rare treat. Only downside is Gwyneth Jones - a very noted singer, but lacking in the full Verdi style at this point in her career.

The soprano has very un-Italian phrasing and diction, the tenor has a pretty lyric voice good for light verismo but not Verdi, Simionato was at the end of her career. Giulini does a good job.
