How did you ever find this rare, historic and FABULOUS video of Verdi's music sung and acted with unforced drama and beauty of tone, by great artists, the likes of which we don't have today? I especially am fascinated wtih Sondor Konya's magnicent tenor voice and his acting. I studied with Rossi-Lemeni opera Stage Directing, (and voice with the legendary Virginia Zeani, his wife). I also sang the role of MARINA in his last performance of the opera "Boris Godonov" which he directed, and performed the lead role in, during his tenure as teacher and Stage Director, at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Perhaps you know my voice teacher, Peter Volpe? He was Pimen in that performance of Boris Godunov, and was Rossi-Lemeni's protégé; he's now himself a professor at IU!

Konya’s voice captures perfectly the characters suffering and pathos. Seems like he sort of specialized in that throughout his career.

NOW, these are those great sets and costumes of the TRUE GRAND OPERA! Wonderful to see what you have posted. 1967 was only yesterday, as far as, the musical opera riches were. Exploding everywhere, we remember those years, today, as exhilarating and beyond what we expected that there will never be a time like this, again. Thank you!

Much as I appreciate Konya's Lohengrin, I don' think he is right for Don Carlos. And what a wonderful Posa Bruscantini makes, just as in the 1968 Roma Don Carlos under Previtali.

@@xxsaruman82xx87 And Lohengrin is _not_ a Heldentenor. He is a Jugendlich, and Konya defined Jugendlich. That means one is ideally suited for Lohengrin and Walther above all. I saw Konya's Walther. His was the most beautiful and most suitable voice for the role I ever heard in person.

    • @alanshaw3699

Konya' could encompass a wide range of tenor roles, including operetta, Puccini (Fanciulla, Manon Lescaut), Verdi (Ballo), Offenbach (Hoffmann, Gounod (Roméo), Donizetti (Lucia) and the lyric Wagner, (Lohengrin Meistersinger). This Don Carlos is fine, only one step from his best in the early sixties.'

Se una cantante è stonatissima, non è capace legare due note senza fare portamento, se ogni attacco è fuori e gli acuti siano peggio di un gatto, perché allora scritturarla?!
