    You're totally right, I guess I AM terrified of John Hamm uncovering my secret homosexual relationship

    There's a pretty popular headcanon in the fandom that "angel" became a term of endearment in the first place bc humans near the Beginning heard Crowley refer to Aziraphale as such so often lmaoooo

  • @HuntingViolets
    @HuntingViolets ปีที่แล้ว +69

    "Angel" really is Crowley's pet name for Aziraphale at this point. Aziraphale has not returned the favor by calling his friend "Demon" as an affectionate moniker. In the book, Anathema was worried about taking a ride with two strange men (although she had little choice at that point), and, after hearing "angel," apparently realized she had been safe the whole time because these two were a couple.

      @ericamacs3875 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      She also realises this in that scene in the series though but I guess in the book it's more obvious.
      I think Demon wouldn't be a nice pet name for him. There's not really any other name he could use i think

      @@ericamacs3875 Yes, I was being a little facetious with that, although I have heard people use "bitch" and "bastard," oddly enough. in the book. Aziraphale calls Crowley "my dear" and "my dear boy." I've read some fanfics that use "love," "my love," and "dearest."

    • @ericamacs3875
      @ericamacs3875 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HuntingViolets Yes "My dear boy" would be very in character for someone like Aziraphale, but they must have decided not to use it. (I'd forgotten that bit from the book)
      It's very old fashioned, you'll find it in Wodehouse or Evelyn Waugh. Often "My dear chap" even for men you don't know, it would just be a friendly way of addressing another man when you're very posh.
      Stephen Fry uses it, it's still in use a little bit.. . but I wonder if in writing the telly series they thought it was so rarely used now that it might be misunderstood by non Brits.
      Personally I think love or my love is kinda out of character, not usual with someone like him. I have a couple of colleagues who call me "my love" and also shopkeepers/tradespeople often do, but it is one of those expressions that just some people use, often depending on if it's a thing in their local area.
      "Bitch or bastard" wow, nope. Not terms of endearment.

    • @HuntingViolets

      @@ericamacs3875 Yes, of course ("dear boy"; "my dear" perhaps less so); indeed, I see some takes about the Sherlock Holmes stories from modern readers that demonstrate this). "My love" must be a more modern innovation for strangers? I know "love" has been aroundt for a while. Well, Crowley has called Aziraphale just enough of a bastard in an affecionate way. In the fics with "my love," their reonship is at another point, of course.

    • @ericamacs3875
      @ericamacs3875 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@HuntingViolets It is more a regional thing I think. Being called, love, my dear, my love, etc by shopkeepers etc. It depends on the culture of the person and where in Britain you are from, Irish people also use it a lot.
      Yes he did call him a bastard in that one scene but it was very specific and OK within that context, an honest observation, it's usually a horrible thing to say to someone though.

    "He could run a very successful laundromat" is very much not what I thought of when he blew the stain away.

    19:58 There's a bit in the book during this car drive where we get Agatha's POV and she makes it a point that even if she's riding with two male strangers she has a butterknife with her for safety and when Crowley calls out "Get in Angel!" she relaxes and it comes to her attention quote "she had been safe all along." 😊

    Love that this show has demons in nasty underground basements looking disgusting, but the biggest a-holes are the angels in their pristine buildings

    I really love your observation about Aziraphale being morally grey. That starts in Ep 1 when Crowley reassures him he's done nothing wrong, and he's so relieved. It's a slippery slope but he is naive as well and still naive even 6000 years later. But he's given in to a lot of temptation and become very morally grey, as you've picked up.
    He's such a fascinating character and Michael Sheen is brilliant.

    Love the idea of the witchfinder Shadwell genuinely believing in witches but also just using the witchfinder army to be a scammer that extorts money out of Aziraphale and Crowley 😂😂

    Some historical context the names Nutter and Device are a reference to a real historical known as the Pendle Witch Trials. A famous trial where 10 people were condemed as witches. Alice Nutter was one of them and 3 others including a man that had the last name Device. They were taken to Lancaster held for trial where the key witness was a 9 year old child of one of the accused who may have been influenced by a local lord who was after Alice Nutters property.
    I live pretty close to Pendle Hill, been exploring local history alot recently, interestingly, spells, charms, curses and such were fine and practically part of early christianity with even monks enscribing charms for money. The persecution with witch craft came around the rise of Protestants.

    I think a good way of looking at their morals is with the understanding that Adam and Eve eat the apple gaining knowledge of good and evil but Crowley and Aziraphale do not, same for every other angel and demon. In the conversation they have in Eden neither one of them are sure their actions are good or evil because it's not something either of them understand. Aziraphale gets told guns give weight to a moral argument by other angels but that's not a belief that demons have or something he's come up with but not, as far as we know, a direct message from God. Just angels without knowledge of good or evil deciding that since their side is good it follows that what they believe is good.
    So was Crowley wrong to tell Eve to eat the apple? We assume it's wrong because it's demonic but if the apple was a reward from God and leaving the garden wasn't a punishment then maybe he did the right thing. Afterall the plan is ineffable so no one can be sure it's not what God wanted to happen so Crowley might have been doing God's will and Aziraphale might have been in wrong.

  • @HuntingViolets

    Well, Agnes would only be able to see the choices they had made (in the future, but time isn't always linear), so she would have had no control over their making those decisions.
