  • In the year 1998, Insomniac Games created a purple dragon that would go on to become an instant Playstation classic. However, after all these years, much debate has surfaced as to how well the original Spyro the Dragon has aged, with some saying that its focus on collecting bogs it down, while others state the purity of the gameplay still manages to carry it through. So which is it? Well, that's what I'm about to explore today as I review the original Spyro the Dragon and see if it still holds up in 2023!

I wish more modern games were like the OG Spyro the Dragon.

0:43 Insomniac's Spryo the Dragon trilogy are the games I choose to play when I'm feeling sick or stressed because the gameplay is simple and easy enough to be relaxing. They are excellent games if you are looking for a casual experience to rest your brain for a few hours.

I'd say Spyro 1 has actually age the best of any of the spyro games. The simplicity of the gameplay, avoiding all the mini-games the other games would include makes it much more fun to play. As a kid, or on a first time through, I suppose the mini-games provide some variety, but I'd say the bulk of them are boring and annoying. I don't know if it's because the levels lack the mini-games and had to focus more on collecatathoning or because Spyro 1 was the original and had less of a time crunch as the sequels did, but I also feel like these levels have the best design of all three games as well. Almost every level has some area or trick to it that felt like I had discovered something cool as a kid. A big open field, an area across a river, figuring out how to get to a wizard on an edge, etc. I can't say I got the feeling from most of the other games, save for maybe Autumn Plains.

I can understand the mini-games getting in the way of the core gameplay, but I thought some of them did make the experience feel more fun, especially in Year of the Dragon (Granted there were also a handful of annoying ones like the trolley mini-game from Ripto's Rage). But, yes, it is true that the original Spyro the Dragon had a special kind of simplicity the sequels weren't able to match. It almost gave me the same atmospheric-vibe that the PS3 game "Journey" provided me. Maybe not quite the same, but close.

I HATE the minigames. The first game is absolutely the best in the series.

The only thing that didnt age well were flight levels honestly. They're still just as frustrating, not fun to do when trying to do a legitimate 120% play through and and even as an adult, I still hate them with a passion. I know they weren't meant to be easy but I literally found Gnasty Gnorc easier as well as future bosses in the continuing installments like Ripto also. The first by far is the most nostalgic which how I even found your video. I had a random memory of the growing and shrinking lady enemies from Dream Weavers and the annoying ass sound they made and wanting to charge them instead of fire breathing to hear them make that "gfwauf" sound when they died. It got me looking up the soundtrack and humming along with all of them still by heart after all these years and then watching speed runs, glitch runs, and finally leading me here. Sorry but Riptos Rage, Year of the Dragon, Enter the Dragonfly, etc, they dont hit as hard even if I remember the names. Only level or section that even had an enjoyanle memory from any of the other installments was the skateboard part to fire at the weasels because it reminded me of Tony Hawk Pro Skater which I was playing at the time top lol. Alas, it'll always be the classic Spyro the Dragon for me. I did play the remastered but idk man, the graphics of the og really have a special place in my heart

The original Spyro the Dragon definitely has a certain level of nostalgia for me as well. I wouldn't say the sequels were necessarily bad, though. While Ripto's Rage suffered from a lot of backtracking, YOTD managed to fix that and the other playable characters and vehicles were functional at the very least. Although, Check Six Studios really messed up with Enter the Dragonfly; if only Universal didn't force it to be Christmas rushed, then maybe it could've turned out better.

@@davreviews4162 Oh the other games aren't bad, they just dont hit as hard in the nostalgia and I barely remember them compared to the og. Enter the Dragonfly I have residual trauma from and never finished lol it was the first time my ps2 was shut off during a save screen by a parent. I was in the 80%s somewhere of completion when my dad forced me to come down for dinner by shutting it off. I clearly exited the level and waiting for the save. But. It corrupted my save bc it wouldn't load after that and I wasnt starting over lol

Playing the reignited trilogy has brought me such joy and also frustration as I don’t know how younger me solved some of these levels. Spyro will always have a special place in my heart and I hope someday it gets even more love.

Honestly it's the reverse for me. When I was younger, I wasn't able to complete any of these games.
