Does Birth by Sleep Succeed as a Proper Prequel?

Welp, I know Birth by Sleep didn't win the poll, but by the time Infamous 2 had won by one vote, I was already hard at work with this one!
Overall, Birth by Sleep represented a change in direction for the Kingdom Hearts franchise--a "turning point" as a certain someone liked to put it; however, does this change in direction benefit the series as a whole, or was it the beginning of Kingdom Hearts going off the rails? Let's find out!
