I remember building this with (well watching) my dad as a little kid on the kitchen table in the sixties. Along with a Spitfire we (he) also built, it began my childhood love affair with Airfix and almost sixty years later, I'm still a sucker for a box of plastic, some paint, and glue on wild winter's days.
Built it last year. Really a nice kit. For the clear windows that get complaints, I put a drop or two of clear on them and it fixed the problem. Tip: paint curtains on the inside, it gives a great look to the windows.
I recently watched this video & wanted this (though now oop) as I love unusual looking kits. Quite happy to say that I've managed to get the 1984 boxing, still sealed, for £3 on vinted!
good review, the larger HP400 had two engines, oddly the HP42 saw brief RAF service in WW2, could make for an interesting alternative colour scheme to the tricky silver, lots of fascinating history with those early commercial airlines.
Not strictly RAF but was used in camoflaged form by BOAC. I don`t think any survived the war though. I think I just might pick up one of these as I already have a resin/metal 1/144 HP 0/400 and it would be interesting to compare them.
I remember this well. Bought the first version when it came out and it was a nightmare! Warped fuselage, flashing around most if the wing struts. It’s one of the few Airfix I didn’t complete. Having said that I’ve seen some finishing models and they looked great.
@@MOS6510Models From what I remember the original version (moulded in silver plastic as I remember) went together reasonably well and didn`t have flash problems to any great extent. Clifford`s model must have really been from a bad batch. Judging by the review the moulds must still be in decent condition since it dosn`t seem to have much of a flash problem even after all these years.
@@MOS6510Models noooo, sadly it went the way of the Henry 8th, flintlock pistol and the golden hind (I think) kits and eventually found its way into the bin after being broken, some of my models suffered worse fates though lol
Airfix caused a sensation back in 1965 with this incredible kit, yet I'm afraid they got the scale wrong: this beauty, in 1:72, would have been a true blockbuster! Another mis-scaled kit, in my opinion, is the Boeing Clipper.
@@MOS6510Models Wingspan of these babies was 40m, which would come out at over 83cm in 1/48th, which would make it hardly realistic (and affordable) even today, and would be downright sci-fi in 1965, not to mention the fact that "quarter scale" was very much a Yank thing, and totally non-Airfix. But the B-29 had a wingspan of 43m, and Airfix did produce her in 1/72nd scale (Series 7) only six months after launching the Heracles. The Heracles' wingspan would be marginally shorter than that of the B-29, and marginally longer than that of the Series 6 Sunderland, in production since 5 years before; the fuselage of the Heracles would be just a bit longer than that of the Sunderland, so the H. P. 42 could have made a superb Series 6 addition to the 1/72 range. Pity Airfix did not take the leap.....
@@MOS6510Models At the time Airfix were pushing 1/144 as a standard scale for passenger aircraft models so using it for the HP42 and Boeing Clipper probably made sense at the time. They likely thought a 1/72 version wouldn`t sell enough for the price they would have to charge for it as at the time their best sellers were always the military subjects, particularly WWII.
@@MOS6510Models Agreed, too. But civilian beauties like the Heron, Ford Tri-motor and Fokker Friendship did get produced in 1/72. It was an awkward position for Airfix: making these in 1/144 would render them too small, and doing the Clipper and Heracles in 1/72, while no doubt earning them accolades from the pundits, might probably leave the accountant boys quite cold. Adding more discomfort to the situation: the Comet, Vanguard and Caravelle, which heralded the "Skyking" series back in 1961, were introduced as "harbingers of the new huge passenger aircraft of the future". The 747 and L-1011, and even the VC10 and Boeing 707, proved Airfix right: the "Skyking" range was definitely "futuristic", but the Heracles and Clipper hardly fit the bill in that respect! Definitely uncomfortable types to model in the mid-to late Sixties.
Considering the time this kit was made its in remarkable condition and minimal flash and not all bad in details when age and size raken into account. I'm thinking there maybe one in the stash. Will have to rummage when the Christmas lights go back in the loft assuming I get time to look 🤔☹
Very intersting. I just got a 1993 release. The modling is very good as well. Of note the instructions have 10 steps and even the detail drawings are slightly different in places but overall the same "style". It seems they redid them then...
Yes the have adjusted them in some of the kits but others they have left the instructions alone If you have a minute, can you please subscribe to the channel.. It really helps us with the youtube algorithm.. Happy Modelling
fair guess @mos6510 couple of hours besides the drying time (glue and paint) basically? so a good one to hop between other kits etc? and under $20 is nice for something different.
Actually built this one in the mid sixties, and believe me there was a lot of flash on it then, are you sure they haven't done a reetool albeit minor on this one?

Good review. But I am sorry to say this maybe it is just me if you stopped biting your nails it would be an easier watch. It is a wee bit off putting on the close ups.
Sorry this was not meant as mean criticism. Far from it. I work in photography and when you see film with hands close up it looks much better with clean hands with nails. The reviews are very good.

Thanks for the info! Great tip
I did this kit many years ago when I was teenager! 🤩🤩 I still have it. I didn't even paint all model, just some sections and put decals! 😅😅
That is awesome!
@@MOS6510Models Thanks buddy, it is one of my favorites, it reminds me on much better and happier time 😊😊

thank you :)

Interesting subject! I wish Airfix would make one in 1/72 scale!
Maybe one day!
It would look very good in the wartime colours of dark earth/dark green with yellow undersides. Might have to get one of these.
That would be cool! worth buying to have a crack at that

its been said elsewhere thats it a good model to build

One of my pals made the 'first edition' back in '65, but I was much more interested in the Airfix AFV range by that time - ! 😁
Very cool!
I had the original . Looking forward to the Trident also a Vintage Classic
yes im filming that one next week
Bought a "pre-owned" one on ebay. Kind of a wreck. Lots of pieces missing. Still, it built up into a beautiful kit!
fantastic.. might be worth buying this one to have another go :)
Cool model of a really cool aircraft. :)
I think so too

true but people like them
