Hah. I've had this module sitting on the shelf for ages and never thought it would work with my i-pad. How cool that it fires right up using this simple setup. Now I can throw the EX in my travel case and record some quality sounds while on the road. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for the set up video it has made clear a couple of things for me .it is hard to find clear information on the web for some things . Keep up the good work !
Amazing thank you so much. I have the later cakewalk version and it works really well when recording with the iPad, thanks to your help. You're the man!!!!!
No Problem, glad this video has helped people. The main reason I did it was because I had to go through a lot of hassle and expense to get mine working properly so I figured I would share the knowledge! Have a great day and Happy Recording!!
Hi Rob, great video mate, is it possible to connect a 4 channel usb small size mixer to ipad in this same way you have shown, will ipad support mixers? Will it work ?
Question: I am trying to hookup my edirol ua25 into my macbook air -- but if I plug my usb in directly into my computer, no power lights are showing. Do I need the macally usb hub? In order to get power? Is the edirol ua25 not able to draw power without the usb hub?
Rob, Did you ever show the Edirol AFTER you plugged in the mic? I'm a singer and am wanting to use my Edirol 25ex to have mic input as well as guitar. it would be nice to see the actual connections of the guitar and mic. Thanks.
Been years since I did that setup. But if I re-call the edirol was limited to one channel when working with the ipad. I'd have to plug it in and try it again. Otherwise, plugging in your guitar and recording it and then going back and plugging in your vocal mic to the same input and record it on a separate channel would work too.
i have the focusrite scarlett 2i2 and i read that people did this same setup to get it to work with ipad but i can not get mine to work. i tried using garage band and the focusrite tape app. neither register the input of the interface. any ideas that might help my situation? ,thanks
what version of ios do you have, cause i have a usb hub however mi ipad says when i connect the lighting from the usb hub "The connected device is incompatible" my interface is a steinberg ur22, any idea why?? thank you so much! my ios is 10.1.1
Hello, please tell me is it going to work without power multi hub usb ports ? I mean if you have only the cable connectors? I have an old presonus from 2008. It has only firewire inputs. I have a cable with firewire-to- usb. USB I can connect to the apple usb camera connector and it should be work? I need to know and to understand it because I don’t live in USA and in my country in stores where sell apple products - sellers don’t know about it anything... Thank you
+Isaac Wu Lol... That would explain the number of views on this video haha... I should shorten it, but I don't even have the original video file anymore. Have great day! Hopefully it helped you out!!
MahsteinMe You need a powered USB Hub that's at least 2000MA to power the Edirol Unit. The iPad alone will not have enough power. I just found that this brand worked the best, not all 2000MA USB hubs will work.
Cheers for the video. I've been contemplating either the UA 22 EX or the Presonus Audio box 2 for the iPad.....But, I've got a perfectly good UA25 sitting on my computer - you may have just saved me a couple hundred bucks. I just need to find a 2amp USB hub in combination with a power bank for mobile recording. Many thanks. Edit: Grabbed a powered usb hub that I wasn't using and it worked fine! I've rigged up a battery pack for the hub - 4 rechargeable cells seem to be spot on for the usb specs of 4.75 - 5.25 volts.
Awesome! Great idea with the Batteries! You should make a video and share that knowledge! I wouldn't know where to start with that but that would be awesome!
Sorry for the l;ate response. I just noticed this. No I haven't encountered that, however I would assume that the device is not getting enough power from the USB hub or are you positive that the device is having some issues of its own. Have you tested it on a MAC or PC to ensure it's operating properly?
You need the powered hub in order to power the edirol. It gets its power via USB and there isn't enough power coming from the iPad. I did get the same errors without the hub. Sorry for the late response, I didn't see this until just now. I hope everything worked out for you.

In this case, can you use it Midi Out/In at the same time? For example : play guitar and control your sound from foot midi controler?
I don't have midi controller setup with my guitar rig but I have ran a piano through the midi and it worked fine. That said, are you trying to control fx in your iPad with the midi controller? Just trying to imagine your setup and why you would need the controller going through the iPad.
Robert do you have any idea how to make this Edirol UA25 work on OSX Yosemite? I mean...there is no drivers available for this audio interface at the moment to be able to roll at the fullest potential on Yosemite. I just tried like you did on iPad to turn the Advance+ option OFF and at least it reads the sound thru the audio interface....but still it doesn´t recognize the xlr mic conected to it, and i lose the audio card potential with that Advance option off probably.. :/ Any suggestion? Thank you for your time.
Jijay Jijay You have to install the advanced drivers in order to use the advance option. Unfortunately I haven't had any experience getting it to work on Yosemite, but I've found that older MAC drivers still ten to work with the newer OS. This is a discontinued unit now so they won't be coming up with new drivers. Best I can say is try loading an older driver, the advance may not work though doing it that way. I know the Advance option will not work at all with the iPad's generic drivers, but you can still run the XLR and direct out's in basic mode. You do need advance mode to run the Midi ports though, which means they will not work with an iPad.
Hey, thanks for the vid. I'm wondering if you could get the Edirol to power up without connecting to the ipad or a computer? I need to use it without a computer to mix down a stereo signal to mono. I've tried with no luck to get this powered using an Apple ipad 5v 2.1A USB wall adaptor. Do you think it just needs more power, or does it need a USB signal from a computer too? Thanks Rob!
It requires USB to power and I believe signal also. You could try it with just the USB hub but I don't think you will get any power without signal from a device of some sort.
Do you have an idea if this would work across all USB audio interfaces? I have a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 and I would like to to record on my iPhone. Do you think this would work?
+Sean Dwyer Technically it should work yes. Following the same process. The trick is to be sure that MAC drivers exist for the device. If so, then it's compatible with MAC and therefore should be compatible with an iPad. If it uses an external power supply then all you need is the camera kit to connect it, so that's a pretty cheap attempt. Otherwise you will need a good powered USB hub to ensure the unit gets consistent power.
+Rob Reed Thanks for the reply! How would I go about making sure the MAC drivers exist..? Also, should I expect to run into any problems trying this with an iPhone 6 as opposed to an iPad? Thanks again.
Hey Rob. I need to connect my ipad to my audio interface and use the 4 outs to assign different tracks inside garagenand, is that possible? lets say im running click cues and music, so i only want the audience to hear the music going on 1 and 2 and i want to send the click and cues to the musicians on 3 and 4, is that possible in garageband? can i go to each channel and choose the specific out put for them? Thanks.
Sebastian Yepez Martinez ok... I haven't had experience with the 4 in units... so your wanting stereo for both FOH and stereo click to the band. Have you thought of going mono? You wouldn't even need an interface then. Otherwise I'd suggest what most bands are doing and that's running Ableton Live with the interface for that. I honestly don't think GarageBand has that ability. However there may be another app on an iPad that would. I'll check around and if I find something I'll send you a link.
RCA's in general can be very noisy. I haven't had an static problems but then again I haven't used the RCA jacks for recording. I'll give it a go and let you know... What do you mean by KRK's I feel I should know this.. Lol.
Ferdiansyah Temon iPhones didn't have the drivers for the USB adapter when I tested this originally. I haven't tried it recently but I'm fairly certain they still don't.
Ferdiansyah Temon I was quite skeptical with the whole idea of connecting my Edirol to my phone, but surprisingly it works. My interface is Edirol UX 25, and I did not use a USB but the the powered USB lightning adaptor (lightning in, USB in, lightning out). My iPhone is 6S.
dehamellin Sorry for the late reply... I've tried with no success... The iPad's will because they have a generic driver loaded for external audio cards and input devices. Unfortunately the phones and ipods do not.
people are having problems with this, the drivers have not been updated, check the Roland site for updates eclecticlight.co/2016/09/20/reported-problems-in-macos-sierra-an-incomplete-list/
Is it totally broke on iOS 8.3 ? Want to use usb (audio) via cck. Has anyone got it working (on ios8.3?) tried adding 'unsupported 3rd party accessories' cyd.tweak, alas still to no avail
Hi, I have a Cakewalk Interface (Roland), one IPAD Air 2 and need to connect, but in Spain is not possible to buy Macally 7 Port. I found this items: Are ok? CSL - USB 3.0 Hub activo 4 puertos incl. fuente de alimentación de 2A Increíble K - Kit de conexión de cámara 8 pines Lightning a USB OTG Cable adaptador para iPad Aire Mini
Sorry I never replied!!! Honestly, I'm not sure, the thing you have to know for sure i that it does actually put out 2A... the problem I've seen with other units is they claim to be 2A but are not really putting that much out. If you don't have the 2A, there won't be enough power to power up the Edirol.
ios 8.3? That's going back lol I don't even know which version I was at when I did this video, but I still use this method and haven't had any issues myself. I'll double check the version on that ipad this weekend and reply again.
I’ve just got the steinburg ur22 an have rigged it up to my iPad air2 using the same method you are doing here but the usb light just keeps flashing in an of , have you any ideas please
No you can't, that's why you need the hub in the middle. Sorry for the late response, I always forget to check these!! lol... The only reasn you can't plug it direct to the iPad is because the edirol, like many other audio interfaces, is USB powered and the power out of the iPad is not enough to power it. Thanks!
......................you can accomplish the same thing with a 1/8inch stereo jack cable with rca's out, stereo jack into ipad rca's into edirol, then use your ipnoe and bluetooth to control your midi stuff, you all need to check out the "midi studio" app in the app store, grab it, its free, then grab midi bridge or midi wrench from the app store
Yes that can work, but its still analog vs digital recording. There's a difference. This was simply a help video to give people a hand hooking up the Edirol Interface to their iPad, which now also works with iPhone since the latest IOS update on the iPhone5. There are cheaper ways to do it like you're suggesting, using any of the products from iRig. Cheers... Rob
there's no difference as long as your going into the box first, what comes outa the box is whats digital no matter what, for instance my interface is a 32bit interface, now even if i go 16 bit in, by the time it hits my daw its 32 bit. I wasnt questioning or clowning your vid, just pointying out that for those who dont have the funds to do it your way, they can also do it the way i stated and aside from the interface, its free

No worries... did this a long time ago and I still use mine from time to time for voice overs and small things. Great little rig.
This is why I like TH-cam. Thank you for posting, it helped me a lot. Especially the part when the camera connection kit has to be plugged.
Man, you are awesome. I've had this unit for the last 10 years and it's 100% reliable. Gotta try this one! Thanks for sharing.
Really useful video, even all these years after you made it. Thanks!
does it still work? just got a new ipad, and looking for recording options

what is this cable name that u used
I have this audio interface can we probably use this for Facebook live?
Yeah will have full power for recording good setting method!
Hey. Are we able to connect a guitar processor? I've a pod hd500.
Hi! Is it possible to do that on iPad2? Or lightning cable is needed to connect?
had no luck with one powered hub, tried another. works like charm. midi is inactive though (as suggested on some compatibility list)
yes midi isn't working you're right but there are cheap units that will do midi if that's what you need.
what version of ios do you have, cause i have a usb hub however mi ipad says when i connect the lighting from the usb hub

Michael Valdes like mentioned in another comment, it worked for me on iPhone 6S
Hey Rob! Can the edirol be used on mac OS Sierra (10.12)?
